Derbyshire baker Luke Evans Bakery helps Children’s Trust charity during National Doughnut Week
Tuck in and raise cash! Derbyshire baker Luke Evans Bakery is offering customers a sweet-toothed opportunity to help seriously disabled children -by eating doughnuts.
The company, based at Riddings, near Alfreton, will give the Children’s Trust eight pence for every doughnut sold during National Doughnut Week, which starts on Saturday May 7, 2011.
Over the past 19 years the special week has raised more than £700,000 and this year organisers hope to collect at least £50,000 for the Children’s Trust, a national charity which particularly helps children who are born with brain injuries or suffer brain damage as a result of an accident or illness.
Services across the UK range from special education for youngsters with profound and multiple learning disabilities to short breaks and long-term care.
Luke Evans Bakery proprietor David Yates said: “The trust’s work is so important and we are proud to join bakers up and down the country in this, the 20th National Doughnut Week.
“All we need now is our customers to play their part… by tucking into as many doughnuts as possible. We sell them individually or in packs of five, so what better way to raise money for a worthwhile cause?
“We hope our trade customers will do their best to promote doughnuts during National Doughnut Week, and that the general public will get behind our efforts too.”
Luke Evans Bakery is a family business established in 1804 and can call on eight generations of baking experience. It supplies around 200 trade customers in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, including shops, schools, delis and Pride Park – the home of Derby County Football Club.
It also sells direct to the public from its shop in Green Hill Lane, Riddings.
Fully trained craft bakers operate 24 hours a day turning out breads, cakes and savoury products.
Luke Evans Bakery can also make stunning cakes for every occasion… from weddings and birthdays to special anniversaries and retirements.

Snooker ace Jimmy White beaten on the black… thanks to Sherwood Truck and Van
Commercial vehicle group Sherwood Truck and Van helped customer Keith Holgate realise a sporting dream when he played his snooker hero Jimmy “The Whirlwind” White in a nail-biting charity game.
Keith, of Holgate Transport, Arnold, Nottinghamshire, played Jimmy at a special night to raise money for a Sheffield-based snooker charity.
He was chosen by Sherwood Truck and Van’s aftersales manager, John Howley, and salesman, Garry Nelson, to take part in the event – and was delighted to come out on top.
Following a strong start by Keith, a three-times Nottinghamshire amateur snooker champion, Jimmy fought back and the frame was decided when Keith stuck the final black away in some style.
Keith, who also successfully bid during a charity auction for two prints of Jimmy, said: “I couldn’t believe it. It was amazing to play against him but to win was just a dream come true.
“I’d like to thank Sherwood Truck and Van for giving me the chance to play against such a legend.”
It’s not the first time Keith has competed against one of his sporting heroes. A few years ago he played Ronnie O’Sullivan after buying a snooker table from the star on E-Bay.
“I had to fetch it from his home and got to play three frames with him. He had just won his second world championship so was a little too good for me. It was a great experience, particularly because both Ronnie and Jimmy White are idols of mine – I’ve been following Jimmy since 1979,” said Keith.
The game against Jimmy was part of a fund-raising night at Crystal nightclub in Sheffield to help the Stephen Harrison Academy - a not-for-profit social enterprise teaching snooker to disadvantaged people, including children with learning difficulties.
One of Pele’s football boots and a Robbie Williams song sheet were sold during the auction and the event was also attended by world amateur snooker champion Alfie Burden, Sheffield Wednesday footballers Tommy Miller and Nicky Weaver, and local boxers Ross “The Boss” Burkinshaw and Ryan Rhodes.
Run by professional snooker player Stephen Harrison, the academy is based at the Innovation Centre, Sheffield, and works in conjunction with groups such as the police and local authorities.
Sherwood Truck and Van, based at Blackwell, near Alfreton, Derbyshire, and with operations in Lenton, Nottingham, Highfield Lane, Sheffield, and Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, already supports the academy by providing free maintenance, servicing and storage for a converted bus, which contains a snooker table and other games equipment.
The Leyland Lynx single decker was converted last year and now tours areas of Sheffield and south Yorkshire, with plans to venture further afield.

Baa-gain! Croots Farm Shop sausages reduced by 25% to mark the launch of its new mutton sausage
A new mutton sausage to celebrate and support Derbyshire’s sheep farming heritage has been designed by award-winning butchers at Croots Farm Shop.
The mutton, herb and lemon sausage is the first mutton sausage to join the range of bangers created at the farm shop near Duffield.
Mutton is currently enjoying new-found favour after being showcased on the BBC’s Great British Food Revival TV programme recently by Welsh chef Matt Tebbutt. A number of celebrity chefs are backing the meat including Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
Now Croots Farm Shop has come up with its own way of marketing mutton with its special Croots Derbyshire sausage made using the meat.
“I’ve been planning to create a special Derbyshire sausage to add to our popular sausage range for ages now, but couldn’t decide what flavour to go for,” said Steve Croot. “We have dozens of sausages in our repertoire now and I was keen for something that was going to be distinct. After hearing about how mutton is undergoing a bit of a revival it suddenly dawned on me that we should go for a mutton sausage. After all, Derbyshire is known for its sheep!”
Croots Derbyshire sausage is being launched on Tuesday April 19th and to mark the occasion there will be 25% off all sausages from then until Saturday April 23rd.
The farm shop, at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, sources the meat for its sausages within a few miles of Croots, and the mutton will be no exception.
“Mutton is a meat that seemed to have lost its popularity, but almost immediately after the Great British Food Revival programme we had customers asking for it at our butchery counter,” said Steve. “It makes perfect sense for our Derbyshire sausage to be made of mutton, and I hope it goes down a treat.”
The butchery counter at Croots has won a string of awards, including 16 awards earlier this year at the BPEX regional roadshow which were judged by industry experts.
Croots has a range of around 40 different flavours of banger, which it sells on a rotating basis. The farm shop recently extended its fresh meat counter in response to demand.
For more information visit www.croots.co.uk
Croots Farm Shop & Kitchen is open Sundays from 10am to 4pm (café until 3.45pm), and from Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (café until 4.30pm). It is closed on Mondays. Please note it will be closed on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday (April 24th and 25th). It will also be closed on Friday April 29th.

Artisan producers lined up for Loughborough English Food and Drink Festival
A feast of artisan producers will be bringing a tasty range of food and drink to a new Loughborough market this Easter.
Cupcakes and curry sauces, plum breads and beers, and salsas and sausages are just some of the items that will be on offer at the Loughborough English Food and Drink Festival, which is being held in the town’s Market Place between 10am and 4pm on Monday April 25.
Cooking demonstrations will also be held to provide inspiration to shoppers.
Among those giving demonstrations will be Lincolnshire-based Oslinc, who will be cooking up a large ostrich egg as an alternative breakfast fry-up, and Derbyshire baker Sarah Gayton, who will be making scones.
The market is being organised by East Midlands Fine Foods on behalf of Charnwood Borough Council.
East Midlands Fine Foods events co-ordinator Jo Taylor said: “We’ve got an excellent range of food on offer at the festival to appeal to all tastes. We’ve also lined up some cooking demonstrations from stallholders who are taking part in the market, which should help to give some ideas of the best ways of serving up the food and drink that’s being sold at the festival.”
The event is the first of four similar festivals being planned for Loughborough during 2011. Future events are scheduled for June 26th and 27th, August 28th and 29thand October 23rd and 24th.
East Midlands Fine Foods, which supports speciality food and drink producers across the region, has run the monthly two-day Regional and Speciality Food and Drink Market in Nottingham, in conjunction with Nottingham City Council, for almost four years.

Commercial vehicle group Sherwood Truck and Van backs Anthony’s Formula 600 bid for glory
Amateur rider Anthony Warren will be on the grid shortly for his first full season of competitive racing thanks to employer, Sherwood Truck and Van.
The commercial vehicle group is sponsoring the 32-year-old as he gears up for the start of the Formula 600 competition.
He will be riding his 165mph, 600cc Yamaha YZF R6 at Darley Moor Motorcycle Road Race Club, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire, in a series of seven monthly meetings starting on Monday April 25.
Vehicle technician Anthony, of Riddings, Derbyshire, has been with Sherwood Truck and Van at its headquarters in Blackwell, near Alfreton, for seven years and is hoping to scoop the Newcomer’s Cup.
He has wanted to follow in the tyre tracks of his hero Barry Sheene, since he first got on a motorbike at the age of eight. Coincidently, Barry Sheene used to race a Sherwood truck, when truck racing was popular.
“It’s a hobby, rather than a potential career, but I’d like to take it as far as I can. I’m very excited about the coming season,” said Anthony.
“I love the thrill of the competition and I love the atmosphere on race days and meeting new people in the paddock.
“Over the past three or four years I’ve had to buy a lot of equipment – a larger van, the bike itself, leathers, tyre warmers. And I’m still saving for a caravan. Any sponsorship is great and Sherwood Truck and Van’s help with the entry fees is really appreciated.”
Sherwood Truck and Van regional director Helen Waterfall, said: “It’s a pleasure to support Anthony. Taking part in motor sports is never cheap but he has shown real commitment.
“We hope he does really well and wish him every success as he follows his dream.”
Sherwood is a leading supplier of new and used commercial vehicles, established in 1978. The company also maintains, services and repairs commercial vehicles across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire and most of Cheshire.
Sherwood Truck and Van, which recently became part of the Guest Motors Group of Companies, has operations in Lenton, Nottingham, Highfield Lane, Sheffield, and Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, along with its main site at Blackwell, near Alfreton in Derbyshire.

The Orange Tree plans to refurbish the venue and open it in late summer or early autumn.

This latest acquisition is good news for both the company and for Loughborough’s nightlife, said Ben Hings.
“We are very pleased to have bought The Newshouse,” he said. “We plan to change the name, refurbish the venue, and hope to be opening something new and exciting for Loughborough’s nightlife in a few months time.”

Anila's Authentic Sauces gains first Scottish distributor
Award-winning premium curry sauce and accompaniments producer Anila’s Authentic Sauces has gained its first dedicated Scottish distributor, who has almost immediately begun supplying to six independent retailers.
The move will help Anila’s to expand its retail stockists north of the border, and comes as the firm launches its stylish new branding with peel and reveal labelling that will inspire customers to create fantastic dishes of their own.
Anila’s products, which sell through delis, farm shops, health food stores and quality food retailers, recently unveiled new labels to reflect the distinct characteristics of the range.
The labels highlight the concentrated nature of the superb Indian curry sauces – adding water doubles the quantity of curry sauce. The labels also emphasize the authentic great taste …and that the sauces contain only natural ingredients, are free from dairy, gluten, added sugar, onion and garlic, and are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
And behind the new-look label on each jar is a guide to making the perfect authentic meal using the ingredients of choice along with serving suggestions and contact details for even more great recipe ideas.
The curry sauces, chutneys, pickles and dips are also being packaged in chic new jars.
“We are very pleased to have our first dedicated Scottish distributor,” said Anila Vaghela, who founded Anila’s Authentic Sauces in 1997. “This will make it easier for our existing Scottish stockists, and should hopefully help us to increase the number of retailers who would like to have our curry sauces, chutneys, pickles and dips on their shelves.”
Wholesale supplier Blue Mountain Scotland, run by Raymond Wilson, will be working with Anila’s Authentic Sauces to provide a distribution service covering most of Scotland.
“Raymond came to London to visit our manufacturing unit, as he is very hands on and wanted to see how our fantastic products are made. The ethos of Raymond's business is that people buy from people and customer satisfaction is number one priority,” added Anila.
Raymond said: “I have been looking for some time for a product that I could add to my portfolio, and felt that Anila's range was just perfect. I am delighted with how well it is being received in Scotland.”
Anila’s produces eight premium concentrated curry sauces, covering most regional tastes of India, handmade in small batches, as well as a range of 16 chutneys, pickles and dips made with single fruits and vegetables. The chutneys and pickles, which are also made using natural ingredients, are delicious accompaniments to curries and cheese, and perfect in sandwiches and marinades.
The firm has won 11 Great Taste Awards from the Guild of Fine Food for its products. Its Goan Green Curry Sauce was named Best Vegan Product in The Veggie Awards 2011 by Cook Vegetarian! magazine, with the judges saying: “Not only one of the best vegan curry sauces we’ve ever tried but one of the best curry sauces available. Its complexity of flavours makes its taste truly sensational.”
In 2009 Anila’s Spicy Korma Curry Sauce scooped a “Free From” Food Award.
Dairy-free, gluten-free and with no added sugar, the curry sauces are suitable for vegetarians and vegans. They also don’t contain onion or garlic, which make them ideal for families with differing dietary requirements.
Anila’s Authentic Sauces is based in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, with a unit in Hounslow, and is run by Anila and her husband Dan.
Anila’s products are sold at John Lewis Oxford Street and John Lewis Bluewater, and top quality gourmet stores, such as Harrods, Wholefoods and Planet Organic, plus hundreds of other outlets that include health food stores, garden centres and gift shops, as well as smaller independent stores such as Budgens at Ascot, Shepperton and Crouch End. Anila’s also sells direct to the public at around 20 farmers’ markets across Surrey, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire, including Guildford, Walton, Windsor, Maidenhead, Ascot, Ripley, Reading, Beaconsfield and Farnham, and online via www.anilassauces.com

Sherwood Truck & Van supplies eco-efficient vehicles to bed maker Warren Evans
Ethical furniture manufacturer Warren Evans has ordered 18 environmentally efficient vans from commercial vehicle group Sherwood Truck & Van.
The leading bed, bedding and bedroom furniture producer, which has won a string of awards for its environmental commitments, is adding the new Iveco EcoDaily 35C14 chassis cabs to its delivery fleet.
Helen Waterfall, regional director for Sherwood Truck & Van, which is based at Blackwell near Alfreton in Derbyshire and has dealership sites at Lenton in Nottingham, at Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, and in Highfield Lane, Sheffield, said: “We were delighted to be able to help Warren Evans as it strives to minimise effects on the environment.
“As well as being an excellent vehicle, the EcoDaily is at the forefront of sustainability and economy. It is ideally suited to the company’s commitment to the environment.”
Sherwood is a leading supplier of new and used commercial vehicles, established in 1978. The company also maintains, services and repairs commercial vehicles across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire and most of Cheshire.
It is now best known as a dealership for Iveco trucks and vans – the second largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles in Europe.
Sherwood, part of the Guest Motors Group of Companies, prides itself on its service pedigree with a stock holding of more than 15,000 lines, a fully equipped accident repair centre and 24-hour roadside support.
Ethical and environmentally friendly practices are at the heart of everything Warren Evans does.
The company has been the Sunday Times’ Best Green Company three years running, Best Local Retailer in the 2008 and 2009 Observer Ethical Awards and Premier Award winners in the prestigious BCE (Business Commitment to the Environment) Environmental Leadership Awards.
Founder Warren Evans believes passionately that caring for the environment is compatible with running a healthy business and this applies to everything the Walthamstow-based company does – including its deliveries.
Fleet manager Phil Young said: “We’re long-time Iveco Daily users but this is the first time we’ve sourced our vehicles from Sherwood Truck & Van.
“They come highly recommended and have a strong reputation with others in our industry. We like what we have heard, and we have been led to expect the very highest levels of support, across the board.”
Launched last year, the EcoDaily is certified to EEV (Enhanced Environmentally friendly Vehicle) standards. These far exceed the minimum Euro 5 emission standards demanded by law.
As well as being cleaner and more than 90% recyclable, the EcoDaily is designed to offer high levels of fuel economy
“Then there’s the driver,” said Mr Young. “Operating in and around London can be stressful at the best of times so we specified a range of innovations designed to minimise that stress.
“Iveco’s AGile automated transmission makes them easier to drive. The Electronic Stability Program minimises braking distances and reduces the risk of skidding.
“Anti-lock braking and Electronic Brake Distribution maximises braking effectiveness and features such as air bags, reversing alarms and cameras maximise driver and bystander safety.”
The EcoDaily vehicles are equipped with lightweight bodies and can take a one-tonne of payload.
Assembled by Erdington-based Portland Commercial Bodies, these are made of Panelite, an environmentally friendly, thermally fused material developed by Dynamic Panel Solutions to offer a high weight/strength ratio.

Tasty food demonstrations at new Loughborough English Food and Drink Festival
Eggs won’t come much bigger this Easter than the giant ostrich egg which will be fried up as part of a range of cookery demonstrations at Loughborough English Food and Drink Festival.
The egg will be the centrepiece of an alternative traditional English breakfast cooked up by Lincolnshire firm Oslinc at the new foodie event, which runs on Easter Monday in Loughborough’s Market Place.
The demonstration will be one of a number given by artisan food and drink producers taking part in the event organised by East Midlands Fine Foods on behalf of Charnwood Borough Council.
Originally planned as a two-day event over the Easter weekend, but now a special one-day event on Easter Monday, April 25th the festival is expected to attract artisan and speciality food and drink producers from across the country.
“As it will be Easter, it’s appropriate to feature eggs in our cooking demonstrations, and they don’t come much bigger than ostrich eggs,” said East Midlands Fine Foods events co-ordinator Jo Taylor.
The event runs from 10am to 4pm on April 25, and is the first of four similar festivals being planned for Loughborough during 2011. Future events are scheduled for June 26th and 27th, August 28th and 29thand October 23rd and 24th.
“We’ve got several cooking demonstrations lined up for the event, so not only will visitors be able to buy some of the country’s best regional food, they will also be getting some great tips on how to cook it when they get home,” said Jo.
“We’re hoping to create a great family atmosphere on Easter Monday.”
In view of the fact that more traders than expected planned to spend Easter Sunday with their families and that virtually all shops in the Loughborough area will be closing on Easter Sunday, market organisers opted to condense the festival into a one-day event.
Mike Bird, Charnwood Borough Council’s markets and fairs manager, said: “Traders are delighted to be Trading on Easter Monday which should make the market an even bigger attraction with a friendly, fun, bustling atmosphere for families and shoppers to enjoy.”
East Midlands Fine Foods, which supports speciality food and drink producers across the region, has run the monthly two-day Regional and Speciality Food and Drink Market in Nottingham, in conjunction with Nottingham City Council, for four years and is delighted to be running similar events now in Loughborough.
