2016 fbe awards winner GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory
Nominations are now being invited for the annual East Midlands fbe Awards which recognise and reward the teams behind some of the best construction projects in the region.
Returning for a second year is the Best Rising Star category, which will shine the light on the construction and development sector’s most promising young professionals.
Entries for the awards are expected from across Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
The categories include Regeneration, Residential, and Non-Residential developments, along with Rising Star of the Year. The winners of the first three categories will automatically form the shortlist for the Overall East Midlands Scheme & Team Award.
Free to enter, the awards will be presented at an event run by the East Midlands fbe (Forum for the Built Environment) on 12th October 2017 at the City Rooms in Leicester. Around 150 professionals from the construction, development and property sector in the region are expected to attend the ceremony, which last year sold out in advance.
“The East Midlands fbe Chairman’s Dinner & Awards night is a popular date on the calendar of the region’s construction sector,” said Eddie Mewies, regional chairman of the East Midlands fbe and MD of M-EC Consulting Development Engineers.
“The awards are the chance to recognise and celebrate some of the region’s top projects, as well as the teams who are behind them. We are pleased that once again we will have a category for the Best Rising Star, so that we can shine a light on those young people who are showing outstanding achievements in their field and celebrate the next generation of leaders and influencers in the East Midlands construction sector.”
As well as entries now being open, sponsorship opportunities are also available for the event.
Details about the awards and entry forms, as well as sponsorship opportunities and tickets for the awards ceremony, are available from http://www.fbeonline.co.uk/east-midlands/events/fbe-east-midlands-chairmans-dinner-and-awards-2017.htm or by contacting Mary Daw on 07883 033552.

The fbe is a national organisation, with branches across the UK and is the longest established networking group for the property, development and construction industries. J Tomlinson and SYHA staff with SYHA customer Carmelle
Building services company J Tomlinson Ltd has secured a contract extension with South Yorkshire Housing Association after successfully supporting the organisation with its kitchen and bathroom replacement programme for almost three years.
The additional contract means that J Tomlinson will be undertaking a further £1.8 million worth of upgrades and repair and maintenance work on properties across Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, and Rotherham in South Yorkshire.
It was won after the firm achieved a 99% customer satisfaction score on work carried out on kitchens and boilers for SYHA over the past year.
Antony Newton, regeneration director at J Tomlinson, said: “J Tomlinson has worked on kitchen and bathroom replacements for South Yorkshire Housing Association properties since September 2014 and we are very pleased to have secured a two-year extension to continue the renovation and improvement programme being undertaken by the organisation.
“Our teams have wide experience in refurbishments of this type, and it is always pleasing to receive a contract extension, as it is an endorsement of the work already completed to date. We are looking forward to continuing our relationship with the housing association and to improving residents’ homes by updating and installing new kitchens and bathrooms, and carrying out other key maintenance and repair work.”
Nottingham-based J Tomlinson operates across South Yorkshire, the East Midlands and the West Midlands, offering a range of integrated building services which include construction, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), facilities management, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance and regeneration.

Regeneration scheme appointment for J Tomlinson

Contractor J Tomlinson has been appointed on the second phase of a major regeneration scheme in the West Midlands.
Earlier this year the Nottingham-based company began work on phase one constructing 11 new industrial units at St. Modwen’s Albion Gateway project at Burton-upon-Trent. These are due to be completed in November.
Now the firm has been appointed to build a further seven new industrial premises as part of the second phase of the 10-acre, mixed-use development which is replacing part of the former Pirelli tyre factory with a mixture of warehouse, trade counter, industrial units, restaurants, a public house and a hotel.
Construction managing director at J Tomlinson Martin Gallagher said: “There were strong levels of interest in the first phase of this high-profile development and we are very pleased to have now been appointed to build the second phase of the Albion Gateway scheme.
“This is the latest in a number of regeneration projects that J Tomlinson has worked on and is great news for the East Staffordshire economy, as well as for us as a company.”
The contracts have supported additional job opportunities at J Tomlinson. The scheme is also providing work for local subcontractors and suppliers as both phases of the project are carried out.
Phase one and two will bring almost 60,000 sq ft of new business and industrial premises to the market.
Located on the main arterial route to the north east of Burton-on-Trent’s town centre, the scheme benefits from its close proximity to major transport links, including the A38 and A50. St. Modwen, the UK’s leading regeneration specialist, is investing in the local road infrastructure, which will include two new dedicated junctions to the scheme as well as local highway improvements on the Derby Road.
J Tomlinson, which offers services in construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical engineering, energy efficiency, renewables and facilities management, is based in Lilac Grove, Beeston, near Nottingham, and has regional offices across the East and West Midlands.
Earlier this year J Tomlinson was named in Deloitte’s Businesses Leading Britain 2014 report, which provides insights into the UK’s 1,000 fastest-growing businesses with annual revenues between £30 million and £1 billion.
Recently the company announced four key contracts in the West Midlands, potentially worth £25 million. The company was appointed to a four-year framework contract by Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police covering servicing, maintenance, reactive repairs and minor works which has a potential value of up to £9.1 million over the lifetime of the agreement.
The firm also won a five-year contract worth £10 million to replace kitchens and bathrooms in around 1,600 properties in Birmingham, Coventry, Stoke, Walsall and Wolverhampton for housing organisation Midland Heart. In addition, J Tomlinson was appointed on two contracts in Sutton Coldfield for a new 65-bed care home and a new building for Sutton Coldfield Conservative Club.
These contracts are contributing to the continued growth of the company which is expected to see its turnover increase from £54 million in 2014 to £67 million this year, and with a forecast to rise again next year to £85-£90 million.

J Tomlinson completes £1 million Derby refurbishment

Contractor J Tomlinson has completed a major refurbishment of one of Derby’s most prominent buildings.
The £1 million refurbishment programme has transformed the historic Shot Tower building on Albert Street into a virtual business hub.
Over the last 10 months, the 1930s building has undergone a complete refurbishment at a cost of £1.028 million, to create a hub with all the resources needed by start-ups, graduates, SMEs and people looking to become self-employed.
Phase one of the refurbishment is now complete, with the fit-out phase set to start shortly. It is hoped the building will be open to the public in May 2015.
Martin Gallagher, construction managing director at contractor J Tomlinson, said: “J Tomlinson is pleased and proud to have worked on the refurbishment of Shot Tower Corner, which is one of Derby’s most prominent buildings. The project, which has included major internal and external renovation, is set to help regenerate that area of the city.”
The building, which has been unoccupied for a number of years, takes its name from the tower that once stood on the site and was used to make lead shot before its demolition in 1932.
The refurbishment of the three-storey building, carried out by contractors J Tomlinson and project managers Faithful and Gould, has included various structural works, including the installation of a new staircase and lift and new wiring and heating systems. The exterior of the building has also received a face-lift, with the installation of new windows.
The refurbishment work has been funded with a £685,000 grant from the European Regional Development Fund 2007-2013 programme (ERDF) and £315,000 from Derby City Council’s Regeneration Fund, set up to stimulate city centre developments.
Shot Tower forms part of the £14.2m Connect Derby scheme, which sees Derby City Council’s workspaces, Friar Gate Studios, Sadler Bridge Studios, Kings Chambers and Shot Tower come together to support new enterprise in the city.
Commenting on the completion of the refurbishment programme at Shot Tower, Ann Bhatti, Connect business centres manager, said: “J Tomlinson have done a great job on the project and I’m really pleased with the end product.
“Shot Tower has a slightly different profile to the other Connect Derby buildings and will support new enterprise by providing businesses and individuals with a flexible, professional city centre base, low overheads and a range of business support, mentoring and networking opportunities.
“We hope it will enhance the employment opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds, particularly those who are living in Derby’s disadvantaged communities and may have found a barrier to self-employment in the past.”
Councillor Martin Rawson, deputy leader of Derby City Council and cabinet member for planning, environment and regeneration, said: “I am delighted to see this important city centre building brought back into use providing support and facilities for Derby’s small businesses. This type of investment is vital to our city’s economy and ensures Derby is open for business to those interested in setting up here.”
J Tomlinson, which offers services in construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical engineering, energy efficiency, renewables, fit out and facilities management, is based in Beeston near Nottingham, and has depots across the East and West Midlands.

Awards for Focus Consultants’ museum refurbishment project

Nottingham-based Focus Consultants is celebrating the news that one of its projects has received two accolades in the awards that are regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the property world.

The £5.4m refurbishment of Tudor House Museum in Southampton picked up the conservation project award at the 2012 RICS South East region awards, and went on to be named as the overall project of the year.

The scheme will now go forward with the other regional finalists to the national award ceremony run by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in London later this year.

Focus Consultants, with offices at Phoenix Business Park, Nottingham, Endeavour Park, Boston, Princess Road East, Leicester, Aubourn, Lincoln, and Holborn, London, was the project manager for the refurbishment of Tudor House Museum – a 15th Century Grade 1 listed building and gardens.

“I am absolutely delighted to hear that Tudor House Museum has been named as the conservation project of the year for the south east region by RICS and also its overall project of the year,” said Focus Consultants partner Steven Fletcher.

“The RICS awards are prestigious awards, which shine the light on some of the best projects out there. We are honoured to have been part of the team working on Tudor House Museum, which has five centuries of life under one roof, and which has now been restored and conserved for future generations to enjoy.”

Focus worked with Southampton City Council as project manager on the Heritage Lottery Fund-backed restoration scheme. The museum re-opened last year after nine years of specialist work to conserve, restore and transform the building back to its former glory, and at the same time install the latest audio-video technology to tell the stories behind the building’s unique history.

Focus Consultants has worked on many key heritage, cultural and arts developments across the UK, including the recently opened SeaCity Museum in Southampton and Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, which opened at the end of last year.

BSP Consulting appointed to Castleward Urban Village regeneration scheme in Derby

Civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has been appointed as part of the team developing the exciting £100 million Castleward Urban Village regeneration scheme in Derby.

The company has been secured to provide the full civil, structural and transport engineering services for the project.

Derby City Council named urban renewal and regeneration specialist Compendium Living as preferred partner for the regeneration programme, which will involve the construction of around 800 new homes on a 30-acre brownfield site, as well as new schools and community facilities. The overall scheme will take more than ten years to complete.

Compendium Living is a joint venture between Lovell, the country’s leading provider of affordable homes, and Riverside, the third largest Registered Social Landlord group in England.

“We are extremely pleased to have been chosen to work on this prestigious flagship project for Derby,” said BSP director Jef Todd. “It has tremendous potential for the city and is one of the most exciting developments we have been involved with in the East Midlands.

“The scheme will replace a brownfield area with a sustainable community between Derby city centre and the railway station.”

Work will start in spring 2012 on the first phase of the Urban Village scheme, which will include around 70 homes, 2,500 sq m of commercial space, community facilities, a central park and a boulevard between Derby railway station and the city centre.

Phase 1 will be built on land provided by Derby City Council and the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and helped by acquisitions financed by the Homes and Communities Agency.

Dave Bullock, managing director of Compendium Living said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen by Derby City Council as their preferred partner for this development, and look forward to helping create this exciting new community in the heart of Derby. Lovell has worked with BSP on numerous schemes throughout the region and we are excited to be working with them on such a prestigious development.”

Teams from BSP’s Derby and Nottingham offices are working on the project – providing the full civil, structural and transport engineering services including transportation planning, road and drainage design, flood risk assessments and bridge building expertise.

“We have involvement in many regeneration projects across the UK, both in the past and currently, and we are delighted to be bringing our expertise to a scheme such as this that’s close to home,” added Jef Todd.

BSP’s project leader for the scheme, chartered civil engineer Carol Ell, said: “The team is looking forward to the technical challenges presented by such a prestigious and interesting scheme.”

BSP provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

The company was launched in Nottingham in 1999 and now has offices in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield.

Role in major north east regeneration scheme for East Midlands and Sheffield civil and structural engineers BSP Consulting

East Midlands and Sheffield civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has been engaged by housing regeneration specialist Lovell to work on the first phase of a multi-million pound mixed-use development that will transform the riverside area of Stockton-on-Tees.

Engineers from BSP Consulting are working on the first phase of the Home Zone part of the scheme at Northshore, a 23-hectare site with over a mile of south facing riverside front along the River Tees.

Future plans for the £300m Northshore development which is being delivered by one of the counties leading regeneration specialists - Muse Developments - include: new offices, homes, shops, hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, leisure facilities and a new campus for the University of Durham, and are expected to bring more than 4,500 new jobs to the area.

Lovell are working in partnership with sister company Muse to deliver this first phase of 50 homes, which it is envisaged will kick-start the development of the wider Northshore scheme.

The former heavy industrial and shipbuilding site close to Stockton town centre has been the subject of a major remediation programme supported by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), and Stockton Borough Council and already features the award-winning Infinity Bridge. Now work is under way on building the first homes on the site.

BSP Consulting engineers are currently designing the details for the drainage and roads for the first phase of the Home Zone, as well as the structural design of the initial 50 plots. The two, three and four-bedroom terrace and semi-detached homes are being designed to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 and each plot will have its own rainwater harvesting tank.

The roads will slope to a central drainage channel, so there are no kerbs as would be expected in a traditional development, and the streets are designed to be shared between pedestrians and motorists.

“Northshore is a very exciting scheme for Stockton-on-Tees, with tremendous potential for the area, and BSP Consulting is delighted to be a part of it,” said David Sumner, managing director of BSP Consulting, which is based in Nottingham and has offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield.
