Annual Glastontree event staged at The Orange Tree in Leicester

Mini music festival Glastontree returns to The Orange Tree in Leicester next month, raising cash for hospice charity LOROS.

It is the eighth year that the event has been held at the pub in the High Street, and this year’s line-up includes some of Leicester’s finest musical talents plus a band from further afield.

Staged on Sunday 5th August from 1pm to 1am, Glastontree has raised more than £11,000 for charity since it was first organised.

It was originally set up by Leicester musician and bar manager at The Orange Tree Andy Tomlinson, in memory of his mum who died in 2005, and has since been held in tribute to Andy, who lost his life in an accident two years later.

Live music will run from 3pm to 12pm, with the line-up featuring Leicestershire bands and musicians Hell’s Addiction, Grace Petrie, Kenworthy, The Manhattan Project, Push, Martha Bean, Skunk Boy Project, Kieran Fowkes and DJ’s Champion Sound.

Seven-piece alternative folk/pop collaborative Shy and the Fight, from the Chester and North Wales area, completes the line-up.

There will also be a charity raffle with a host of prizes donated by local firms and big drinks brands. Prizes up for grabs include local festival tickets. Carvery cobs and roasties will also be served.

“Glastontree is one of our highlights of the year and has become a regular date on Leicester’s music and entertainment calendar,” said Orange Tree general manager Jon Glover. “We’re really looking forward to it, and hope that once again our customers and the people of Leicester will support the event and help us to raise as much as possible for charity. We will be holding Glastontree in tribute to Andy, who is still sorely missed by all of us at The Orange Tree and those on the Leicester music scene.”

A wrist band for the day costs £5 and is available from The Orange Tree.

All proceeds go to LOROS, the Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice.

Third charity swap shop event at The Lansdowne in Leicester

A popular swap shop event returns to Leicester pub The Lansdowne next month, offering customers the chance to freshen up their wardrobes for the summer.

The event, which is in aid of Leicestershire and Rutland hospice LOROS, will be the third event of its kind at The Lansdowne in London Road.

“Our previous swap shops have been very popular with customers, and we’ve raised a nice sum for LOROS as well, which we hope to do again,” said organiser Rachel Hurst.

“Clothes swapping events have become a fashionable way of bagging a bargain and recycling items that no longer fit or are no longer worn. With summer hopefully on its way soon, it’s a perfect opportunity to have a bit of a clear out and help charity at the same time.”

The Lansdowne is inviting people to drop off any clothes, shoes, handbags or accessories at least a week before the event, which takes place on Saturday May 12th from 1pm to 6pm.

In exchange, they will receive tokens that can be used to buy items at the swap shop. Additional tokens can be bought on the day.

Clothes swapping events have become particularly popular in the current economic climate, as fashion fans aim to freshen up their look without shelling out a fortune.

It’s an opportunity to collect some cool clothes, while at the same time finding new homes for items that are cluttering up the wardrobe.

LOROS will receive the proceeds from any tokens that are sold, will benefit from donations given at the event, and any left over items, which will be donated to a LOROS shop.

Festive fundraiser for LOROS at The Lansdowne, Leicester

Leicester bar The Lansdowne is teaming up with creative local entrepreneurs to stage a Christmas fair that will showcase their products.

Unusual gifts, unique clothes, handmade accessories, lovely lingerie and home-baked cupcakes are just some of the items that will be on sale during the Trinkets and Tinsel event on Saturday December 10th.

Running from 1pm to 6pm at the London Road pub, the event will also raise money for Leicestershire and Rutland hospice LOROS.

The fair, which will also feature festive tunes courtesy of the Leicester Chorus Society, is the latest in a number of events staged at The Lansdowne which have raised money for LOROS.

“It’s a great opportunity to support small and fledgling local businesses by providing space for a Christmas fair, and to give our customers the opportunity to buy unusual presents or outfits for Christmas,” said The Lansdowne general manager Kate Owen. “At the same time it gives us a chance to continue our fund-raising efforts for LOROS, which is a charity that we have supported for some time now.”

Clothes swap shop at The Lansdowne, Leicester raises cash for LOROS

More than £100 has been raised for Leicestershire and Rutland hospice LOROS after a clothes swap shop event at The Lansdowne pub in Leicester.

Several bags of clothes have also been donated to the charity’s shop following the event at the pub in London Road.

“We raised almost £110 and gave 15 bags of clothes to the Queens Road branch of LOROS,” said event joint organiser Rachel Hurst. “We had lots of swaps and hopefully people were pleased with their new outfits.”

The idea behind the event was to swap unwanted items and freshen up wardrobes by adding new clothes in an inexpensive and environmentally friendly way.

It was the second event of its kind held at The Lansdowne, and others are planned, added Rachel.

The pub will also be supporting LOROS at its Trinkets and Tinsel Christmas Fair on Saturday December 10th, which runs from 1pm to 6pm and will feature stalls selling a range of goodies.

The Leicester Chorus Society will be providing a range of festive tunes.

Clothes swap shop in aid of LOROS at The Lansdowne, Leicester

A fashionable clothes swapping event is being held at Leicester pub The Lansdowne to raise cash for charity.

The swap shop event on Saturday 29th October is in aid of LOROS, the Leicestershire and Rutland hospice.

Now organisers are appealing to anyone who wants to freshen up their wardrobe and bag a bargain to take their unwanted items to the pub and pick up their tokens ready for the swap shop, which runs from 1pm to 6pm.

“We held our first swap shop earlier this year and it was really busy,” said Kate Owen, manager at The Lansdowne in London Road. “It was like being at a really good sale, with people rummaging through.

“It’s a great idea to swap clothes that you don’t want any more for items that others have donated. It’s a fun, cheap way to freshen up a wardrobe, ready for the new season, and of course it’s a very environmentally friendly way of gaining some new outfits.”

Clothes swapping events have become particularly popular in the current economic climate, as fashion fans aim to freshen up their look without shelling out a fortune.

It’s an opportunity to collect some cool clothes, while at the same time finding new homes for items you no longer wear that are cluttering up your wardrobe.

Tea, coffee and cupcakes will be on sale during the event, which is free to take part in with donations being taken in aid of LOROS.

Anyone who wants to join the clothes swap shop should take their items to The Lansdowne between now and 29th October and exchange them for tokens to use on the day.

Hospice benefits from pub fund-raising events in Leicester

More than £2,000 has been collected for hospice charity LOROS by two Leicester pubs.

Annual music festival Glastontree, which was staged at The Orange Tree in High Street, raised £1,548 for the Leicestershire and Rutland hospice.

Hundreds of people enjoyed the 13-hour music extravaganza last month which featured a host of Leicester bands, DJs and solo artists, including Grace Petrie who performed at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.

The event coincided with the Summer Sundae Fringe Festival in Leicester, and The Orange Tree’s sister pub, The Lansdowne in London Road, netted £630 at its Summer Sundae Fringe Party, which is also being donated to LOROS.

“Glastontree has now raised around £10,000 for various charities since it was first held in 2005, which is fantastic news,” said Ben Hings, managing director of the Orange Tree Group.

“We’re delighted that once again this year’s event was so well supported and that we’ve collected more than £1,500 for LOROS. Add to that the £630 raised at The Lansdowne’s Summer Sundae Fringe Party and we are pleased to say that we will be donating more than £2,100 to the local hospice. We’d like to thank all our regulars, everyone who took part in Glastontree and also local shops and businesses who generously donated prizes for a raffle, which helped us to raise so much money.”

It was the sixth Glastontree event to be held by The Orange Tree.
