Growing civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting invests in management training

Jef Todd and Charlotte Moreland
Six members of the BSP Consulting team are undertaking management and leadership training as part of staff and company development.
Another group of employees is being lined up to get involved in the second wave of training at the East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering firm, said business development director Jef Todd.
“As a company, BSP Consulting has been growing steadily and it’s important that we equip our teams with the necessary skills to support our continued development and to provide them with ongoing professional development too,” said Jef.
“We are committed to both staff and company development, reflecting on our wider commitment to offering the best service we can to our clients across the East Midlands and the UK.”
Those currently undertaking the Apprenticeship NVQ course, run by Training for Business, are structures director Paul Elphick, associate director – civils Matt Viggars, associate director – civils Tony Goddard, chartered civil engineer Carol Ell, principal transport planner Joanna Posnett and senior engineer Oliver Dike.
Based across BSP’s offices in Nottingham, Derby and Leicester, the group will spend around 15 months completing the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Management. The next group of employees is due to start the training in six months.
The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Management is ideal for managers moving into a middle management position, who still retain responsibility for operational processes but are more removed from day-to-day line management duties. The qualification develops the knowledge and skills required to take on higher level responsibilities such as planning and implementing change.
Those involved will develop core leadership skills, take charge of personal and professional development, gain the skills to be able to plan and implement an operational plan, improve working relationships, and achieve a recognised qualification for personal development.
The course is governed by ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) and is being delivered to the BSP team as an Apprenticeship Framework which includes an NVQ by Nottingham-based Training for Business, an Ofsted rated #1 Outstanding training provider, which is part of the NHTA Group Ltd that provides apprenticeships across the East Midlands.
“Training for Business are passionate about the power of quality accredited qualifications to transform people and give them the skills they need for the future. We understand all people are different and need flexible suppliers of training to ensure each and every person reaches their full potential, and as such all our qualifications are delivered one-on-one in the work place and at a time convenient to both the learner and employer,” said Charlotte Moreland, managing director of Training for Business. “We are very pleased to be supporting the team at BSP Consulting.”
BSP and Training for Business organised the training after linking up through support from Nottingham City Council via Nottingham Jobs Hub.
BSP Consulting, which is based at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and has offices at Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester, and Solly Street, Sheffield, provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents. Appointment at BSP Consulting as firm launches new project information management system

James Payne
East Midlands civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has promoted James Payne to the position of finance and IT manager.
He has been with the company for exactly 16 years, having joined BSP straight from school in August 2001.
James has recently been instrumental in introducing a new project information management system at BSP’s headquarters in Nottingham and across its offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield.
The Union Square software is used worldwide by organisations in the construction sector to help them work smarter and collaborate more effectively, and it has already begun showing positive results for BSP.
BSP managing director David Sumner said: “James has been a loyal and valued BSP employee since joining us in 2001. He has recently spearheaded the introduction of Union Square across the business after putting forward the case to the senior team of the benefits of integrating and streamlining our management of information – something which has become increasingly important to the efficiency of the business as we continue to expand.
“We have a commitment to staff development and are delighted to have promoted James to this newly created position at BSP Consulting, which reflects his new role.”
The Union Square system is being used throughout the business, primarily for project accounting but also for internal processes such as HR.
“Union Square has only been in place for a short while but already it is bringing benefits to BSP in making our project accounting more efficient,” said James. “The prediction is that it will help us with our long-term forecasting and planning, and become an increasingly valuable tool in the future.”
James joined BSP as a civil engineering technician at the age of 16, before becoming civil engineering technician and IT manager in 2004 and subsequently IT manager. He is based in BSP’s Nottingham HQ in Oxford Street but works across the group.
BSP, which also has offices at Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester, and Solly Street, Sheffield, provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents. The expanding team has outgrown its Leicester base and has now moved to a new floor in the building in De Montfort Street, which doubles its existing office space.

Eurocodes policy for civil and structural engineer BSP Consulting

Paul Elphick
BSP Consulting has stepped up its use of Eurocodes for civil and structural design.
The East Midlands-based company is now aiming to design to Eurocodes on all new projects, unless directed otherwise by clients.
The codes represent the most wide-ranging change to codification of civil and structural design that has ever been experienced and are the most technically advanced set of civil and structural design codes in the world.
They aim to remove potential barriers to trade that exist when countries have different design standards, although each member country has its own National Annex to the Eurocodes. Building Regulations now also refer to Eurocodes - another reason why BSP is making the switch.
BSP’s policy has already proved beneficial on a scheme at Garsons Farm in Surrey, where the company is working alongside French steel fabricators who are designing a superstructure, while BSP engineers are designing the foundations.
“As we are both designing to Eurocodes, it makes the job easier and more efficient,” said BSP associate director Paul Elphick. “BSP believes the policy of designing to Euorocodes aligns us with recent alterations to Building Regulations and EU directives for procurement of public sector projects which should present opportunities for company growth.”
BSP introduced an implementation strategy and a training schedule for staff to familiarise themselves with the new codes, and the company now plans to use the Eurocodes on as many new projects as possible. The company has also invested in compliant software as part of the move.
BSP Consulting is an award-winning company that provides civil, structural, transportation, environmental and geotechnical engineering services and is based in Oxford Street, Nottingham, with offices at Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester, and in Solly Street, Sheffield.

BSP Consulting secures first overseas contracts

Civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has won its first international contracts with appointments on a major highway scheme and building project in Kurdistan.
The company has secured work in the area as part of a major infrastructure development programme in the region.
BSP has been appointed by the Ministry of Culture as checking engineer for a new theatre in the capital, Erbil. Work is due to get underway on site on the Holi Gel theatre project shortly.
The firm has also been appointed to provide project management services on a road scheme in the region’s second city, Slemani. Work on the 40 km dual carriageway, between the towns of Dukan and Chwarqurna, features a number of bridges and is expected to take two years.
BSP, which has its headquarters at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and branches in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, now has two engineers in Kurdistan who are overseeing the work.
“For a while we have been looking at opportunities in the Middle East in places like Abu Dhabi and more recently Kurdistan, and we are very pleased to have secured these two contracts,” said BSP managing director David Sumner.
“The downturn in the UK construction sector gave us the chance to fully explore areas overseas that were looking for British expertise. Our investment in this over the past few years is now coming to fruition, and we hope that further opportunities will be forthcoming.”
Representatives from BSP have travelled to the Middle East on a number of occasions for a series of meetings and trade exhibitions ahead of securing the work. The contracts mark the first overseas developments undertaken by BSP.
“Since forming almost 15 years ago, we have gradually expanded as a company and we now cover the whole of the UK. The recently won work in Kurdistan is our first international development, however,” added David.
As an oil-rich region, Kurdistan is investing heavily in infrastructure, including roads, hospitals, schools, housing and cultural amenities. The Kurdistan Regional Government has a large spending programme underway which involves major public schemes.
BSP is now registered to operate in the region, which is part of Iraq, and hopes to be involved in additional projects in the future, said David.
The company provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

BSP Consulting appointed as engineers for supermarket scheme

Nottingham-based civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting has been appointed as part of the team building a new £8m Tesco supermarket.
Work has got underway at the site in Hoyland, Barnsley, where Sheffield-based contractor JF Finnegan is building the 28,000 sq ft food store.
JF Finnegan is constructing the eco-store at the redundant site of the former Hoyland Market Street Primary School after being appointed by Litton Properties and Tesco who have partnered to deliver the supermarket, which is expected to create some 140 local jobs.
BSP Consulting, which is based at Oxford Street, Nottingham, with offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, is handling the structural, civil and traffic engineering aspects of the scheme.
One key challenge for the team has been the re-engineering of the sloping site to remove a 13-metre difference between levels and to form a plateau.
“Landscaping in and around a modern retail store is restricted to very tight gradients and this proved a challenge for the scheme, the site of a former school which had a significant existing slope,” said BSP director Carl Hilton. “Our team is highly experienced, both in re-engineering and in retail development, however, and we are very pleased to be involved in a scheme which will breathe new life into this particular site.”
Preparatory site work has now begun, with handover scheduled for summer 2014.
The Hoyland scheme is the latest in a number of retail projects that BSP has been involved in. The company is currently also working on a major new Tesco Extra store and filling station in Rotherham, which is due to be completed in late 2014.
BSP Consulting provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents. It was founded in 1999 and operates across the UK.

Green light given for rail work to BSP Consulting

Six members of the rail team at civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting have been given the green light to continue with their work on and around operational railway lines on key projects.

The company is now sponsoring a team of staff who have successfully completed Personal Track Safety (PTS) courses at Intertrain (UK) Ltd, Doncaster.

The two-day training sessions that the BSP team undertook qualify members of staff to undertake work on or around an operational railway line.

Meanwhile, Nottingham-based BSP Consulting, with offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, has also recently renewed its Link-up accreditation with Network Rail for another year.

BSP’s rail work involves design and inspection of bridges, culverts, gantries, embankments, line-side structures and drainage.

“We have recently been quoting for more consultancy work in the rail sector, so I am very pleased that six members of our rail team have successfully completed PTS, thereby increasing our trackside technical capacity,” said BSP Consulting managing director David Sumner.

BSP Consulting’s in-house rail team, supplemented by a specialist rail consultant partner, has worked on many different types of rail projects, including the design and detailing of reinforced concrete bases for various electrical gear in transformer compounds, the design of a bespoke £1.5m maintenance facility, used during testing of the Virgin high-speed train, and the surveying of a number of bridges over railway tracks and railway bridges over roads and watercourses.

In addition, BSP was appointed ‘bridge strike examiner’ for the Alstom Transport Virgin high-speed train test track, which was subsequently electrified, to support testing of new London Underground trains, and undertook technical appraisals and site inspections for a £6.3 million proposed new signal installations project on the Carlisle to Newcastle line.

Based in Oxford Street, Nottingham, with offices in Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester and Solly Street, Sheffield, BSP Consulting operates across the UK, offering civil, structural, transportation, environmental and geotechnical engineering services.

Named Consultant of the Year 2009 at the East Midlands Property Dinner, the firm provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

Civil engineer BSP Consulting joins drainage consultation

East Midlands civil engineering company BSP Consulting has put forward its views on the future of sewers and drains.

The company, with offices in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, is part of a UK-wide list featuring national bodies, local authorities, universities, water companies and major organisations that have taken part in the consultation.

Defra, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, has been seeking opinions on the national build standards and automatic adoption arrangements for gravity foul sewers and lateral drains going forward.

BSP Consulting is among the likes of key organisations such as parliamentary groups, professional bodies, political parties and national associations that have come up with ideas and suggestions about the subject.

“At BSP Consulting we consider that the implementation of the Flood and Water Management Act could have a significant effect on the future of development,” said BSP Consulting associate director Tony Goddard.

“We believe it is vital for people “at the coal face” within the construction industry to influence the execution of Government policy. Responding to this consultation is another example of how we are striving to ensure a fair future for development for all our clients.”

Defra is expected to consider the views expressed during consultation over the next few weeks and months.

The proposals focus on how water and sewerage undertakers will adopt new sewers and lateral drains connecting to the public sewerage network.

Low carbon affordable homes for BSP Consulting

Civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting has completed work on Derwent Living’s first Level 5 Code for Sustainable Homes development.

The low carbon scheme at Mickleover in Derby has now been officially opened by film director Ken Loach, Derby North MP Chris Williamson and the Mayor of Derby, Councillor Les Allen.

The properties come with a number of eco-technologies as standard, and features include new environmentally friendly construction methods such as insulated render walls and triple glazed windows with carbon neutral wooden frames. Other features include photovoltaic panelling, hot water solar panelling, rainwater harvesting and highly efficient A-rated eco-gas boilers.

A Level 5 rating is one of the highest ratings available under the Code for Sustainable Homes, which is an environmental impact rating for housing in England and Wales.

BSP Consulting, with offices in Derby, Nottingham, Leicester and Sheffield, was civil and structural engineer for the development at Vicarage Road which consisted of one three-bed house, two two-bed houses and four two-bed apartments.

“BSP Consulting has experience of working on Level 4, 5 and 6 Code homes, and we were delighted to work with Derwent Living on such a low carbon scheme,” said Jef Todd, business development director at BSP.

“It has a lower environmental impact than many housing schemes and will also have lower energy bills in the future, which is good news for the tenants.”

Partners involved in the Vicarage Road project were the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA), Derby City Council, developers Lindum Sturgeon, WT Partnership and Franklin Ellis Architects.

BSP Consulting provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

Its services include civil, structural, environmental, transportation and geotechnical engineering.

The company was launched in Nottingham in 1999 and its offices are in Oxford Street, Nottingham, Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester and Vincent House, Solly Street, Sheffield.

ProCon Leicestershire 2011 Award for BSP Consulting scheme

East Midlands civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting is celebrating being part of the team behind a project that took the title of Sustainable Development of the Year at the ProCon Leicestershire 2011 Awards.

The award was presented for the development of Oakham Church of England Primary School.

BSP Consulting, with offices in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, was civil and structural engineer for the £6.2 million scheme, which was a Willmott Dixon project for Rutland County Council.

The news came shortly after another scheme that BSP Consulting worked on – Brookside Meadows in Northampton – was named Sustainable Smaller Housing Project at the Sustainable Housing Awards 2011.

“It is great news for the whole team to hear that the development of Oakham Church of England Primary School has been named Sustainable Development of the Year at the ProCon Leicestershire 2011 Awards,” said BSP business development director Jef Todd.

The building and the engineering system were designed to work as one at the school. Whatever the weather outside, the building makes less demand on heating, ventilation and lighting to keep it pleasant inside. Energy and water-efficient appliances also cut the environmental impact of the school.

The school has space for 280 children, plus 35 pupils with special educational needs and 25 nursery places. Forty square metres of roof area are used for solar heated water. Natural ventilation and occupancy sensing low energy lighting are just two more of the many measures that contribute to the building’s environmental performance and a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’.

BSP Consulting celebrates green award scheme

East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting is celebrating the news that a project the firm worked on has won an accolade in the Sustainable Housing Awards 2011.

Brookside Meadows in Northampton was named Sustainable Smaller Housing Project of the Year at the Inside Housing award ceremony.

BSP Consulting, which is based at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and with offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, was civil and structural engineer for the development of eight rented family homes – the first council housing scheme built by Northampton Borough Council for decades.

Built to level five of the Code for Sustainable Homes, the three and four-bedroom houses include a range of ‘green’ features, such as photovoltaic panels on the roofs to provide renewable energy, heat recovery systems, triple glazing and rainwater harvesting.

“BSP Consulting is very proud to be associated with a project such as this which has been recognised for its approach to sustainable development,” said BSP Consulting managing director David Sumner.

“We are delighted for the whole team to hear that it has won such a high-profile award.”

The awards, which are organised by Inside Housing and the Chartered Institute of Housing, recognise achievement in sustainable projects across the social housing sector.

Northampton Borough Council worked in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), Frank Haslam Milan (FHM), and Orbit Homes on the scheme, which was part of the HCA's Local Authority New Build programme, which funded local authorities to build their own council homes for the first time in decades, benefiting from £450,000 investment. Architects were Baily Garner.

BSP provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

The company was launched in Nottingham in 1999 and its offices are in Oxford Street, Nottingham, Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester and Vincent House, Solly Street, Sheffield.

Sherwood Truck and Van appoints Bob McGarry as regional sales manager

Sherwood Truck and Van, the East Midlands commercial vehicle group, has appointed Bob McGarry to a new role of regional sales manager.

Bob, from Killamarsh, North East Derbyshire, will be based at the company’s Sheffield site in Highfield Lane, working directly for group sales director Robin Hulse.

The 53-year-old, who enjoys golf and fishing in his spare time, has spent all his working life in the truck industry and his appointment brings him back to Sherwood after leaving in 2006 – for a spell selling refuse lorries to local authorities.

He started work as a mechanic for his first employer, working his way up to be branch manager before joining a contract hire and rental company.

His first period with Sherwood began in 1991 when he worked as a truck salesman, covering South Yorkshire, before becoming group fleet sales manager in 2002.

Although based in Sheffield, he is hoping to be on the road as often as possible.

“Face-to-face contact with the customer is a fundamental sales tool and I will be expecting me and my team to be out there as much as possible,” said Bob.

“It’s a new role, but taking on some existing responsibilities. I will concentrate on growing the business while giving good leadership.

“Both my staff and Sherwood Truck and Van customers can expect honesty, integrity and a professional response to any challenges as they arise. I firmly believe in the phrase ‘if you snooze, you lose’ and I will be instilling this in all my staff.”

Sherwood Truck and Van, with its headquarters in South Normanton, Derbyshire, is part of West Bromwich-based Ian Guest Holdings, one of the UK’s largest independently owned commercial vehicle dealers.

The group covers an area that includes the West Midlands, North Wales, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and South Yorkshire.

Regional director responsible for the four Sherwood locations, Helen Waterfall, said: “It’s good to have Bob back on board.

“His working life has been spent in the truck business so he brings a wealth of experience, good contacts and a strong reputation to the team.”

Sherwood is a leading supplier of new and used commercial vehicles, established in 1978. As well as its headquarters in South Normanton and a branch in Sheffield, the group also has branches in Lenton, Nottingham, and in Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent. The company also maintains, services and repairs commercial vehicles across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire and most of Cheshire.

BSP Consulting plays a key role in the opening of a £15 million health and leisure scheme

The latest integrated medical and leisure centre designed and built by an award-winning team featuring BSP Consulting has opened its doors.

The £15 million Moor Park Health and Leisure Centre development in Blackpool features an eco-friendly drainage system which has been incorporated into the play area and park around the scheme. It is thought to be the first sustainable urban drainage scheme (SuDS) in the country designed to be part of a play area.

Civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting, of Pride Park, Derby, worked in association with Ashby de la Zouch developer LSP Developments and Tamworth architects West Hart Partnership Ltd on the Blackpool centre, a three-storey development that includes three GP surgeries, PCT outpatient services, as well as a library, gym and swimming pool.

The team previously worked together on a similar scheme at Freshney Green, Grimsby, which last year won the HealthInvestor Property of the Year Award.

“The scheme at the Blackpool development is particularly unusual because it contains no underground surface water drainage, so all the surface water run-off from roofs and hard-standing areas is managed above ground through a combination of ponds and ditches which take the water away from the building and allows it to dissipate into the park area beyond,” said structural engineer Paul Whittingham, BSP’s project manager for the scheme.

“Managing surface water run-off is critical to any development, and we are delighted to have been involved in what we believe is the first SuDs scheme that’s been integrated as part of the design of a play area and park.”

The SuDS scheme was designed by landscape architect Dave Singleton.

BSP Consulting, which also has offices in Nottingham, Leicester and Sheffield, provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

Two new directors for East Midlands civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting

East Midlands civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has appointed two new directors.

Structural engineer Carl Hilton and civil engineer Jef Todd have been promoted to the Board with immediate effect.

Carl, who is based in BSP’s Nottingham office, has been with the firm for six years and has more than 22 years experience in construction working for consultants and developers. A chartered structural engineer and project manager, Carl will be playing a key role in the coordination of services across the company, as well as developing the business within key sectors.

Sherwood Truck and Van supplies trucks to tool giant Snap-on

Sherwood Truck and Van, the East Midlands-based commercial vehicle group, has won a contract to supply ten trucks to worldwide tool giant Snap-on.

Referring to their vans as mobile tool stores, Snap-on franchisees market and sell a range of 19,000 interchangeable sockets, spanners and other components to engineering professionals.

As well as being a tool store, each van has a personal computer system so franchisees can run their business from the vehicle, which means vehicles must be able to cope with a heavy payload.

Now the group has ordered ten new EcoDaily 70C17 trucks from Sherwood Truck and Van, based in South Normanton, Derbyshire, and with sites in Nottingham, Stoke and Sheffield.

“Our franchisees spend almost all their working days in their vehicles,” said Robert Stevens, Snap-on’s UK franchise manager.

“They appreciate something that drives like a car, is easy to handle, sits comfortably on the road and looks after them in comfort and safety. Unlike truck-style products, the Daily does all this - and gives us a seven-tonne gross weight that more than accommodates a Snap-on tool store body.

“Our business is nationwide so we needed a dealer who could work with us and our existing suppliers.

“Sherwood pitched to us on the practicality of the EcoDaily, but then supported this with the strongest promise of customer service and ongoing support. And with all ten vehicles now in service, we’re more than happy with the reality of that promise.”

Snap-on’s history dates from the 1920s in the USA and began trading in the UK in 1965. It now has a network of 430 franchisees in this country – part of a total of 4,700 operating in more than 150 countries.

Sherwood Truck and Van regional director Helen Waterfall said: “Snap-on franchisees ask a lot of their vehicles but we were more than happy to supply the EcoDaily with our promise of customer care and after-sales service.

“Snap-on has built partnerships with suppliers all over the world and Sherwood Truck and Van is pleased to have become a part of that.”

Sherwood is a leading supplier of new and used commercial vehicles, established in 1978. The company also maintains, services and repairs commercial vehicles across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire and most of Cheshire. It is part of the Guest Motors Group of Companies.

Snooker ace Jimmy White beaten on the black… thanks to Sherwood Truck and Van

Commercial vehicle group Sherwood Truck and Van helped customer Keith Holgate realise a sporting dream when he played his snooker hero Jimmy “The Whirlwind” White in a nail-biting charity game.

Keith, of Holgate Transport, Arnold, Nottinghamshire, played Jimmy at a special night to raise money for a Sheffield-based snooker charity.

He was chosen by Sherwood Truck and Van’s aftersales manager, John Howley, and salesman, Garry Nelson, to take part in the event – and was delighted to come out on top.

Following a strong start by Keith, a three-times Nottinghamshire amateur snooker champion, Jimmy fought back and the frame was decided when Keith stuck the final black away in some style.

Keith, who also successfully bid during a charity auction for two prints of Jimmy, said: “I couldn’t believe it. It was amazing to play against him but to win was just a dream come true.

“I’d like to thank Sherwood Truck and Van for giving me the chance to play against such a legend.”

It’s not the first time Keith has competed against one of his sporting heroes. A few years ago he played Ronnie O’Sullivan after buying a snooker table from the star on E-Bay.

“I had to fetch it from his home and got to play three frames with him. He had just won his second world championship so was a little too good for me. It was a great experience, particularly because both Ronnie and Jimmy White are idols of mine – I’ve been following Jimmy since 1979,” said Keith.

The game against Jimmy was part of a fund-raising night at Crystal nightclub in Sheffield to help the Stephen Harrison Academy - a not-for-profit social enterprise teaching snooker to disadvantaged people, including children with learning difficulties.

One of Pele’s football boots and a Robbie Williams song sheet were sold during the auction and the event was also attended by world amateur snooker champion Alfie Burden, Sheffield Wednesday footballers Tommy Miller and Nicky Weaver, and local boxers Ross “The Boss” Burkinshaw and Ryan Rhodes.

Run by professional snooker player Stephen Harrison, the academy is based at the Innovation Centre, Sheffield, and works in conjunction with groups such as the police and local authorities.

Sherwood Truck and Van, based at Blackwell, near Alfreton, Derbyshire, and with operations in Lenton, Nottingham, Highfield Lane, Sheffield, and Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, already supports the academy by providing free maintenance, servicing and storage for a converted bus, which contains a snooker table and other games equipment.

The Leyland Lynx single decker was converted last year and now tours areas of Sheffield and south Yorkshire, with plans to venture further afield.
