Winners announced for East Midlands fbe Awards 2015

A small Derbyshire housing scheme has been crowned as the overall project of the year at the East Midlands fbe Awards 2015.
Category award winners also included the refurbishment and regeneration of the Malt Cross in Nottingham and the development of a new HQ for the Rutland Agricultural Society and new society and clubhouses for Oakham Rugby Club and Royce Rovers Football Club.
At a sell-out ceremony staged at the City Rooms in Leicester, around 150 people from the region's construction sector gathered to hear about the schemes and the teams behind this year’s winning projects.
The overall winner was a scheme of six houses and two bungalows at Hannah Bowman Way in Youlgrave, Derbyshire, developed by emh group and built by Lindum Construction for Peak District Rural Housing Association and Youlgrave Community Trust. Emh group and Lindum Group jointly nominated the project. Other members of the team involved in the development of the mix of affordable rent and shared ownership homes with priority for local people were architect David Lewis Associates, structural engineer HSP Consulting and Low Carbon Box.
The project, which had earlier taken the honours in the residential category, lies in the Peak District village of Youlgrave and marked the culmination of many years of work. The Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 homes were provided as a result of a local partnership between emh group, Peak District Rural Housing Association and Youlgrave Community Land Trust, with support from Derbyshire Dales District Council, with the design developed in close consultation with the Peak District National Park Authority.
Judges said: “We found it a difficult decision to pick the overall winner, as there were three excellent section winners, of varying scale and type. However, we thought that the Youlgrave project ticked so many boxes in terms of development, design, community engagement and team work, and we felt it was a very deserving winner of the East Midlands fbe Project of the Year.
“This scheme took a considerable time to accomplish and was obviously a battle on many fronts, not least in terms of planning, where a ‘village green’ application had to be overcome, delaying matters by over 18 months, due to there being objectors in the local community. Achieving Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 including all the enhanced ecology is quite an achievement given a tight budget, and overall the project achieves a very sensitive and socially valuable outcome, produced to an excellent quality standard of construction, all of which will have taken a significant effort to achieve."
The winner of the regeneration category was The Malt Cross, Nottingham - the refurbishment of Nottingham’s only surviving Victorian music hall, built in 1877, and one of relatively few in the country. It was undertaken by the Malt Cross Charitable Trust, and nominated by William Saunders Partnership, who were the architect and structural engineer for the project. Other team members were contractor Taylor Pearson the contractor and EP Consulting, who handled the M & E design.
The project brought to life derelict floors and uncovered heritage features that had lain hidden from public view and reconnected the previously sub divided building back into one entity. The Malt Cross Music Hall is occupied by a social enterprise café bar. It is also an entertainment and arts venue which supports local talent. In addition it houses the Malt Cross Trust’s outreach services, including Street Pastors and Safe Space.
A new HQ for the Rutland Agricultural Society and new society and clubhouses for Oakham Rugby Club and Royce Rovers Football Club won the non-residential scheme category. Submitted by developer and main contractor DW Hicks, other members of the team were LE1 architects, structural engineer Diamond Wood & Shaw and MDA Consulting.
The scheme created a new-build exhibition/function space and offices for the Rutland Agricultural Society (RAS) with an attached clubhouse and changing rooms for Oakham Rugby Club. A detached pavilion provides separate changing facilities for Royce Rangers Football Club.
Jef Todd, regional chairman of the East Midlands fbe, said: “We had a record-breaking number of submissions entered for this year’s awards, which was great. The diversity of the finalists and the winners illustrates the tremendous variety of top quality construction projects that are undertaken in the region. I’d like to thank everyone who entered and congratulate the winners and the teams behind the schemes.”
Compèred by former BBC East Midlands political editor John Hess, the awards were sponsored by construction recruitment specialist Hays Recruitment, civil engineering, building and M&E contractor North Midland Construction, engineering and environmental consultants M-EC Consulting Development Engineers, DW Hicks Building Co Ltd and chartered accountants and business advisers Duncan & Toplis. Civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting sponsored the evening’s drinks reception.

The East Midlands fbe (Forum for the Built Environment), a property, development and construction professionals' group, supported the East Midlands NSPCC 'now I know' Appeal at the event, which had finalists from across Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Rutland.

Business award won by civil and structural engineer BSP Consulting

Civil and structural engineer BSP Consulting has been praised for the way it tackled the downturn in the construction industry and has been rewarded with an accolade for its efforts.
The East Midlands-based company re-shaped its strategy to spread the risk across different sectors and avoid having all its eggs in one basket during tough times. This approach has led to the firm winning an award in the Nottingham Post Business Awards 2014.

The judges praised the way that East Midlands-based BSP had developed a marketing push to widen its customer base, which left the business well-placed to make the most of the upturn in the economy.

Business development director Jef Todd said: “When the downturn hit we had two choices – sit back and let it happen or get out and fight. We decided to spread the risk and move into different sectors, investing in marketing when other people weren’t. It took dedication and the passion of the management and the staff working together to achieve progress. And it proved to be a winning formula.

“We were absolutely thrilled to win the award, at what is one of the region’s most high profile awards ceremonies.”

As a result of its strategy, BSP Consulting increased its share of work in the rail, education and primary care sectors. Recent contracts include projects at Brooksby Melton College, Loughborough University and at Network Rail’s Super Depot in Derby. This complements the work that the firm carries out in the housing, retail and commercial sectors.

BSP, which has its headquarters in Nottingham and branches in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2014. The company employs around 50 staff, and operates across the UK. Earlier this year, it announced its first overseas contracts on projects in Kurdistan.

“We were very proud to be alongside two household names – Hillarys Blinds and Trent Bridge Cricket Club – as finalists in the Nottinghamshire Sales and Marketing Award at the Nottingham Post Business Awards, and delighted that we beat off such strong competition to take the title,” said Jef Todd.

The awards were presented at East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham. The Sales and Marketing Award was handed to BSP Consulting by Lasse Hogberg, of De Vere Venues, who sponsored the award.

BSP Consulting provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

BSP Consulting appointed to housing framework

Civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting has been appointed to a framework by a housing group planning to build more than 1,500 homes over the next three years.

The Nottingham-based business, with offices in Leicester, Derby and Sheffield, has been selected as part of the Bromford Group Consultants Framework.

BSP is one of three engineers chosen by Bromford Group to tender for housing projects across an area that includes Birmingham and the West Midlands, Stoke, Cheltenham, parts of Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire, and some areas of Derbyshire, including Erewash and South Derbyshire, and Derby.

“Being selected for the Bromford Group framework is a significant appointment for BSP Consulting,” said BSP Consulting business development director Jef Todd.

“It was a competitive process to secure a place on the framework, and we are delighted that BSP is one of the three successful engineering consultants appointed to help the Bromford Group to build new homes over the next three years.

“The team at BSP has extensive expertise and experience in designing housing projects, both in the private and public sector, and we are looking forward to supporting the Bromford Group in its plans to build much-needed new homes.”

It brings to six the number of housing frameworks that BSP has been appointed to. Bromford business assurance manager Jayne Forrester believes the fifteen businesses who were successful during the procurement process will help Bromford create a new vision for affordable housing.

She said: “This procurement framework will place Bromford in a strong position moving forward, as 2013/14 looks to be an exciting year for our New Homes team. By introducing this new framework, we can ensure continuing efficiency and sustainability through our procurement processes.

“BSP submitted a fantastic application offering value for money on their services, something incredibly important for a social business which is publicly funded.

We look forward to utilising BSP’s expertise over the next few years, pushing some innovative housing projects forward.”

Bromford, which has offices across Central England, will work with BSP on a number of its own developments.

The procurement framework also allows other affordable housing providers to access the framework through Bromford.

This initiative could potentially see BSP working with South Shropshire Housing, Staffordshire Housing, Wyre Forest Community Housing, Coventry-based Orbit, Walsall Housing Group and Cheltenham Borough Home.

BSP Consulting, with its head office at Oxford Street in Nottingham, provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

It was founded in 1999 and operates across the UK.

New framework agreement for East Midlands civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting

Civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has been appointed onto a new framework agreement.

The appointment to the Cross Keys Framework marks the eighth framework agreement achieved by the company, which is based in Nottingham and has offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield.

It means that BSP is now one of the approved consulting engineers for the Cross Keys group, a social housing provider with plans to build around 700 new homes over the next four years.

The group covers an area around Peterborough, and under the framework agreement, BSP will now be able to bid for consultant engineering work for any new social housing schemes that the group builds.

“This is excellent news for BSP Consulting,” said BSP business development director Jef Todd. “Being appointed to a framework agreement is very often the first step in being able to win work with a group or an organisation, so it means that BSP is well placed to tender for potential new schemes that the Cross Keys group may have in the future.”

BSP provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

The company was launched in Nottingham in 1999 and now has offices in Oxford Street, Nottingham, Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester and Vincent House, Solly Street, Sheffield.

Previous framework agreements BSP has been appointed to include the Keepmoat Homes Framework, the Cambridgeshire Partnerships Framework, the University of Leicester’s Consultancy Framework and NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland. The firm now has framework agreements in three sectors – social housing, health and education.
