British Sausage Week success for Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire

Derbyshire farm shop Croots has won two awards in a competition to mark British Sausage Week, which runs from November 3rd to 9th.
The farmshop at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, near Duffield, scooped a gold award for its pork sausage and a silver award for its Italian sausage.
The competition for butchers and retailers is run as part of the national annual celebration of the British banger, and the two awards presented to Croots means the farm shop has now won more than 70 awards for its sausages, meat products and home made items.
“British Sausage Week is all about celebrating the diversity of the traditional British banger, which is something that Croots fully supports,” said Steve Croot, who runs the farm shop. “We love creating new flavours of sausage, and are renowned for our sausages. It’s always great when we receive awards for them.”
Croots’ pork sausage is made using free range pork from Staffordshire. The Italian sausage, which contains pork, basil and mozzarella, was originally created as part of the shop’s World Cup sausage range last summer.
The shop has won scores of awards for its products since opening in 2008. Croots was also a runner-up in the Best UK Independent Food Retailer 2010 category of the Observer Food Monthly Awards. The year before, it was named in The Independent’s top 50 best food shops.
Earlier this year, owner Steve Croot was named the Derbyshire Food Hero for 2014.
Croots Farm Shop is open daily from 9am to 5pm (Shires Eatery until 4.30pm). Croots runs Fresh Fish Thursdays between 9am and 1pm on Thursdays.

Sausages Celebrated at Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire

Sausage supremos at Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire have tasted success again for their award-winning bangers.

Croots has scooped a gold award for its Breakfast Banger in a competition to mark British Sausage Week, which runs from November 5th.

The farm shop near Duffield has won scores of awards for its homemade bangers since opening more than four years ago, including a Great Taste Award - regarded as the Oscars of the fine food industry.

Now it is gearing up for a sausage celebration to mark the annual week dedicated to the British banger – with plans to launch two new sausages.

Themed to tie in with bonfire night, the newly created sausages are the Croots Firecracker – tasty pork laced with chilli – and the Croots Sparkler, made with fig relish.

“We’re really pleased to have won another award for one of our sausages,” said Steve Croot, who runs the farm shop at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road.

“The Breakfast Banger includes sausage, bacon and egg flavours, and was designed to be a celebration of the great British breakfast.”

The Breakfast Banger was awarded gold in the annual contest held to mark British Sausage Week, which is run by the British Sausage Appreciation Society and is now in its 15th year.

Under the slogan of Stand up for British Bangers, comedian and Al Murray’s pub landlord is encouraging the British public to enjoy quality sausages as part of the week, which runs from November 5th to 11th.

Croots Farm Shop will be staging its own celebration from November 6th to 11th with tastings and 10% off its sausages.

Butchers at the farm shop make thousands of sausages every year using Packington Free Range pork and have designed scores of different flavours, which are on sale on a rotating basis in the shop.

“Sausages are a huge favourite with the British public all year round but especially at bonfire night,” said Steve Croot.

“We’re looking forward to once again celebrating the British banger by joining in with British Sausage Week.”

Croots Farm Shop and Kitchen is open Sundays from 10am to 4pm (café until 3.45pm), and from Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (café until 4.30pm). It is closed on Mondays.

Rock legend Noddy Holder tastes a legendary sausage from Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire

Life-long sausage fan and rock legend Noddy Holder got a taste of one of Croots Farm Shop’s newest sausages during the regional final of a competition to find Britain’s best bangers.

The Henry Cooper Sausage won through to the regional final of the event, held during British Sausage Week.

And Slade frontman Noddy Holder joined the British Sausage Appreciation Society to judge the competition at a Nottingham hotel.

Steve Croot, who runs Croots Farm Shop near Duffield in Derbyshire said: “The theme of this year’s competition was Legendary British Bangers, and we developed our Henry Cooper Sausage in tribute to the boxing champ. Noddy’s a bit of a legend himself, so it was great to meet him.”

The Henry Cooper Sausage created by Croots’ butchers especially for the event features three different types of pork – free range Packington Pork, wild boar and Gloucestershire Old Spot - plus a secret blend of spices, which pack a punch.

It’s one of two legendary sausages developed by Croots for British Sausage Week, which runs until Sunday November 6th. The other is the Brian Clough Banger, which pays tribute to the legendary football manager, and features a dash of Old Big ‘Ead beer from Buxton Brewery and Croots Cow Juice ale.

Croots Farm Shop, in Wirksworth Road, will be holding a sausage festival on Saturday November 5th as part of its celebrations for British Sausage Week, with special deals over that weekend. Samples will be available on November 5th and the butchers will be on hand to offer advice about how to get the best from your bangers.

Two additional new sausages – beef and tomato and lamb and vegetables – have also been developed to mark British Sausage Week.

“We’ve totted up how many different types of sausages our butchers have developed since we opened just over three years ago and it’s an amazing 63,” said Steve Croot. “We don’t sell them all at any one time, but tend to rotate them. It just goes to show how popular sausages are, and how versatile the flavours can be.”

The farm shop is renowned for its quality sausages and pies, and has won numerous awards. Last year it was a runner-up in the Best UK Independent Food Retailer 2010 category of the Observer Food Monthly Awards. The year before, it was named in The Independent’s top 50 best food shops.

“British Sausage Week is an excellent time to celebrate one of the nation’s favourite foods,” added Steve Croot.

Croots Farm Shop and Kitchen is open Sundays from 10am to 4pm (café until 3.45pm), and from Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (café until 4.30pm). It is closed on Mondays.

Legendary sausages created at Croots Farm Shop, Derbyshire

Two legendary bangers are being launched by Derbyshire farm shop Croots to mark British Sausage Week.

The theme of this year’s British Sausage Week is Legendary British Bangers – and butchers at Croots have created two sausages that are named after sporting greats.

The Brian Clough Banger and the Henry Cooper Sausage will go on sale during the special week, which runs from Monday October 31st until Sunday November 6th.

The Henry Cooper Sausage has also been chosen to take part in the regional final of a competition being run during British Sausage Week to find the country’s most delicious banger, which takes place in Nottingham on November 2nd.

Life-long sausage fan and rock legend, Noddy Holder will join the British Sausage Appreciation Society to judge the competition and award those that are worthy with a 2011 British Sausage Week Gold Disc.

“Our butchers are very creative when it comes to designing new flavours – they’ve probably got around 40 in their range now,” said Steve Croot, who runs Croots Farm Shop & Kitchen at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, near Duffield.

“We enjoyed coming up with ideas for sausages and experimenting until we got two new ones that we are very proud of. I’m delighted that one has won through to the regional final of the British Sausage Week competition, and looking forward to hearing what Noddy Holder thinks of it.”

The Henry Cooper Sausage, named after the heavyweight boxing champ, features three different types of pork – free range Packington Pork, wild boar and Gloucestershire Old Spot - plus a secret blend of spices. The Brian Clough Banger, which pays tribute to the legendary football manager, features a dash of Old Big ‘Ead beer from Buxton Brewery and Croots Cow Juice ale.

Magical Harry Potter-themed sausage festival at Croots Farm Shop, Derbyshire, to mark British Sausage Week

Derbyshire farm shop Croots is celebrating British Sausage Week with a Harry Potter-themed sausage festival.

There’ll be bangers that are ‘a quid each’ (quidditch), an HP sausage and a fiery Voldemort banger on offer during the festival at the farm shop near Duffield on Saturday November 6th.

Croots is also celebrating winning a silver award for its breakfast sausage in a competition held to mark British Sausage Week, which runs from November 1st to 7th. The award is the latest presented to one of Croots’ sausages and follows a one star gold Great Taste Award in 2009 given to its black pudding banger.

Croots Farm Shop & Kitchen, based at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, is well known for its home-made sausages – selling a range of almost 40, which are on sale on a revolving basis.

During the Sausage Festival on November 6th Croots will be offering around 20 different flavours, including the saucy HP banger that contains a dash of the popular condiment, and the beef and chilli Voldemort sausage.

Tastings will run all day, with 10% off sausages.

The sausage festival has been given a Harry Potter theme to link to the release of the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows later in November.

Mostly made using free range Packington Pork from Barton-under-Needwood near Burton-upon-Trent, Croots sausages are produced by the shop’s in-house butchers. The farm shop recently extended its fresh meat counter in response to demand.

“British Sausage Week is a celebration of one of the nation’s favourite foods,” said Steve Croot, who runs Croots Farm Shop. “We thought we’d have a bit of fun at our sausage festival and conjure up some interesting flavours.”

The sausage festival at Croots Farm Shop & Kitchen runs from 9am to 5pm on Saturday November 6th.
