Business professionals based in the East Midlands are increasingly recognising the importance of first-class English language skills, according to figures released by Nottingham Language Academy.
In the past 18 months, the training school has helped more than 300 individuals to improve their English language writing and speaking expertise.
Among its students have been company directors keen for help with conference speeches, business professionals who wanted to improve their presentation skills, employees who needed support with special skills such as note-taking or minute-writing, and highly specialised workers who required a completely personalised syllabus for their field.
“The aims and targets of the students who have enrolled on our English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses have been as varied as their cultural backgrounds,” said Linda Walker, who runs Nottingham Language Academy, based in The Ropewalk, Nottingham.
“Some of them wanted to improve their English to study further and others wanted to pass or get a higher score at various language exams. However, many of them have been from the business and professional community, who have studied English for special purposes with us.
“This has included support with written English, pronunciation, vocabulary and specialised skills. We are very pleased that we have been able to provide a service to businesses and professionals in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and other East Midlands counties.”
Since launching in 2010 at least 300 students have enrolled on English as a Foreign Language courses at the school, which last year was accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English.
“The ability to speak and write English competently is a much-valued skill across the world,” said Linda. “At Nottingham Language Academy we are able to offer bespoke courses to companies and individuals to improve English language skills.”
Nottingham Language Academy also teaches a range of modern languages, runs revision classes in French, German and Spanish for GCSE and A-level, and has recently launched a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) course.

Nottingham Language Academy makes the grade with the British Council
Staff at Nottingham Language Academy are celebrating after the centre achieved British Council accreditation.
The quality standard has been awarded just over a year after the academy opened its doors at The Ropewalk in the city centre.
It means Nottingham Language Academy is now on a British Council approved list for teaching English as a foreign language.
Linda Walker, who launched the centre in September 2010, said: “We have had excellent feedback from the students who have learnt with us over the past year or so, but it is extremely pleasing to achieve the British Council accreditation.
“It gives Nottingham Language Academy a certain amount of status and kudos, and will also show future students that we are a place of learning that delivers results.”
The news comes as the academy also celebrates a number of new contracts with businesses across the region and abroad. It has been chosen to teach English to a group of French engineers working on a highly specialised project in the UK, to teach French to employees of an international retail organisation in the region, and will soon be teaching English to senior managers from Germany who are to attend intensive business courses at Nottingham Language Academy.
“The demand to learn and master English as a language continues to grow, as more people move abroad for work or leisure,” said Linda Walker. “We are pleased to be able to help our students achieve their goals, and to offer a service to businesses across the East Midlands and beyond who want to support their staff to develop their English or other language skills.”
Nottingham Language Academy provides bespoke ‘English as a Foreign Language’ training to businesses and individuals, as well as regular classes. It also offers English pronunciation classes during the day and the evening, as well as a range of English exam preparation classes such as First Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which are required by many employers and universities.
In addition, the academy provides teaching in eight modern foreign languages, including French, Spanish, German, Italian and Japanese.
Nottingham Language Academy is based at 8 The Ropewalk, Nottingham. For more information visit www.nottinghamlanguageacademy.co.uk or call 0115 9881318.

English as a second language: Nottingham Language Academy launches summer schools
Nottingham Language Academy is expanding by launching its first summer schools.
The academy, which opened its doors last year, will be offering summer school sessions to teach English as a foreign language.
Aimed at people already living in the UK as well as those from overseas, classes will focus on general English, English for young learners and English for people hoping to teach English as a foreign language.
Running throughout June, July and August at the academy’s base in The Ropewalk, Nottingham, classes of no more than ten will learn in a structured and enjoyable way.
Courses include social activities including theatre and film visits as well as trips to London, Cambridge and Oxford. Trips will be tailored to suit individuals in each group, particularly the young learner groups.
For overseas students the academy is also offering to help arrange accommodation – with a local host as part of its Homestay scheme, in a guesthouse or hotel. It can also arrange pick-up services from East Midlands, Birmingham, Luton or Manchester airports.
“Our small class sizes and professional and highly experienced tutors mean students can get the most out of their time with us,” said Linda Walker, who runs the academy.
“We have summer schools to help those learning to teach English for the first time, those wishing to improve their English and youngsters aged from 10 to 17.
“The mix of in-class tuition and social activities will ensure all our students have a great time and staying in a British home can be the perfect way to practise your new language skills.”
The English Teacher Training Summer School offers over-18s 120 hours of tuition over four weeks starting on August 8. The course offers theory, teaching practise and observation. Participation in the whole four-week course is compulsory to achieve academy certification.
The General English Summer School has an ideal balance of structured learning and stimulating activities for the over-18s. It offers 15 hours of tuition and six hours of social activities each week. After initial assessment to place students at the correct level, they will develop all four language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking – alongside grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
The Young Learners Summer School caters for students aged ten to 13 and 14 to 17 from beginner to proficient level. It includes 15 hours of English tuition and 11 hours of social activities each week.
Nottingham Language Academy offers tuition to individuals and businesses, and teaches English as a foreign language, as well as offering classes in the modern languages of French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Greek and Mandarin.
The modern foreign languages courses are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which now forms the basis of language teaching and learning in most European Union countries.

Nottingham Language Academy is supporting the first ever Nottingham European Arts and Theatre Festival.
The language school is sponsoring NEAT 2011 - a cultural celebration involving Nottingham’s major arts venues, which runs from May 26th to June 12th.
The festival will celebrate and showcase the very best European theatre, music, performance, film and visual art for adults and children, and features artists from a range of different countries, including Norway, Denmark, Germany and Poland.
“Nottingham European Arts and Theatre Festival 2011 is a cultural celebration of the arts in many different forms, and Nottingham Language Academy is very pleased to support this inaugural festival,” said Linda Walker, who runs the academy, based in The Ropewalk, Nottingham.
“As an organisation that is very much involved with Europe through our modern language courses and our English as a foreign language courses, it was very appropriate that we should back an event like this, and we are very much looking forward to it.”
Giles Croft, artistic director of the festival, said: “It is always pleasing when a sponsor and a project are as perfectly matched as this. We are delighted that the NLA have joined us as partners in neat11.”

Polish politician joins English classes at Nottingham Language Academy
Polish marshal Marek Sowa – the Polish equivalent to a UK mayor - has spent three weeks at Nottingham Language Academy on an intensive course to improve his English.
As the Marshal of the Malopolska region of Poland, based in Krakow, he wanted to increase his knowledge of English and be able to communicate more fluently in the language.
So he opted to join classes at Nottingham Language Academy to help him deal more effectively with his role, which currently involves dealing with EU funding, investment and regional development and strategy.
“English is very important for my job,” said Marek. “I take part in meetings with other European regions and countries and I started learning English three years ago. Then I decided to come to England for a three-week intensive course.”
Marek stayed with a Woodthorpe family, and had six hours of lessons every day at Nottingham Language School.
“I found the lessons very interesting,” he said. “My English has improved and I had a good time. I was very happy with it and the teachers were good.”
He hopes the course will help him in his role as marshal.
“I’m involved in regional politics and development,” explained Marek. “Last year there was a lot of flooding in the region and we are now dealing with the damage. I also deal with EU funding, investment and regional development and strategy.”
Nottingham Language Academy, which is based in The Ropewalk, was recommended to Marek by a friend who owns a language school in Poland and who was taught English by one of the teachers at the academy.
“We were very pleased to have Marek as a student,” said Linda Walker, who is a Business Language Champion in the East Midlands and who launched the Nottingham Language Academy in September last year.
“He was a model pupil and it’s extremely satisfying for us, as well as for him, that his English has improved so much during the three weeks he spent with us.”
The school, which offers tuition to individuals and businesses, teaches English as a foreign language, alongside the modern languages of French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Greek and Mandarin.

Nottingham Language Academy launches intensive exam revision classes in French, German and Spanish for Easter
Nottingham Language Academy is launching intensive revision classes this Easter as anxious pupils compete to secure university places before tuition fees rise to as much as £9,000 a year.
As pressure on higher education places mounts, the language school, based at The Ropewalk, in the city, is offering help at both A level and GCSE in French, German and Spanish during the school break.
Students starting university this September will be the last intake before higher tuition fees are introduced in 2012.
Nationally, more than 600,000 people have already applied through the University and College Admissions Service but the number of places available has been restricted to last year’s level of 487,000.
Demand for university places is being further fuelled by pupils who are cancelling planned gap years to beat the rise in fees.
The Easter holiday revision classes will be held at Nottingham Language Academy on April 18, 19, 20, and 21 and on April 26, 27 and 28.
“We want to give as much help as possible to pupils – and parents – concerned that missing out on a place later this year could cost them thousands of pounds,” said Linda Walker, who is a Business Language Champion in the East Midlands and who launched the Nottingham Language Academy in September last year.
“If pupils have to re-sit A levels they could end up in the first wave of students charged up to £9,000 a year in tuition fees.
“While some youngsters will be shutting themselves away to study at home for the Easter holidays, others may feel happier with a professionally structured approach and a classroom environment to help them revise more effectively. Nottingham Language Academy is here to help.”
The school, which offers tuition to individuals and businesses, also teaches English as a foreign language, alongside the modern languages of French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Greek and Mandarin.

Creative writing workshops in French at Nottingham Language Academy
Nottingham Language Academy is launching creative writing workshops in French for lovers of the French language.
The sessions will be run by French native speaker Lucille Venn and are suitable for those who have at least a French A-level or equivalent.
Based at The Ropewalk, Nottingham, the academy offers lessons in seven different modern languages, as well as English as a foreign language.
The latest creative writing workshops, which will last three hours a session, will be held fortnightly, starting in April, either during the evening or at weekends – depending on what suits those taking part.
They are designed for lovers of the French language or for those who need it for their professional work.
Using examples drawn from literature but far from the restrictions of academic essay writing, the workshops will be lively and interactive, and explore language in a playful way to enable students to widen their vocabulary, to polish their grammar, to play with syntax and to find their own style.
“This course is ideal for someone who’s fond of writing and who has a certain level of French and would like to write more creatively in the language,” said Linda Walker, who is a Business Language Champion in the East Midlands and who launched Nottingham Language Academy in September 2010.
The school, which offers tuition to individuals and businesses, teaches the modern languages of French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Greek and Mandarin.

Nottingham Language Academy launches classes in Mandarin
Nottingham Language Academy is expanding its courses just months after opening by launching tuition in Mandarin.
The language school based at The Ropewalk in the city is now offering lessons at intermediate level in Mandarin, which has more native speakers than any other language in the world.
The morning class is being taught by an expert native speaker and has been launched in response to demand from students.
It brings the number of modern foreign languages taught at Nottingham Language Academy to seven.
“Learning Mandarin is becoming more popular as a result of China’s re-emergence on the world stage, but courses are not widely available, so I am delighted that we can now offer a course in Mandarin at Nottingham Language Academy,” said Linda Walker, who is a Business Language Champion in the East Midlands and who launched the language school in September.
The school, which offers tuition to individuals and businesses, also teaches English as a foreign language, alongside the modern languages of French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese and Greek.
Classes are run during the day, evenings and at weekends, and are designed for people who want to improve their job prospects, travel and see the world, live and work abroad, gain a place at university or learn something new for the fun of it.
The modern foreign languages courses are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) which now forms the basis of language teaching and learning in most EU countries.
“It’s estimated that more than 800 million people in the world speak Mandarin, and it’s spoken by more people than any other language in the world,” said Linda. “As it’s spoken in mainland China and Taiwan it’s understandable that there seems to be a growing demand to learn it now.”

Give the gift of language learning this Christmas with vouchers from Nottingham Language Academy
Nottingham Language Academy has created the ideal Christmas present for anyone who’s ever fancied French or sought to learn Spanish – gift vouchers for its courses.
The language school, which is based at The Ropewalk in the city, offers modern language classes in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Greek and Japanese, as well as English as a foreign language.
Now the academy is offering the perfect present for anyone who’s keen to brush up on their language skills or wants to learn something completely different in the New Year.
“It can sometimes be difficult to know what to buy a friend or relative for Christmas,” explains Linda Walker, from Nottingham Language Academy. “Our gift vouchers can be redeemed against the full or partial cost of any of our courses, and we think it would be a great present for someone who fancies learning a language or improving their language skills.”
Launched in September, Nottingham Language Academy runs classes during the day, evenings and at weekends, which are designed for people who want to improve their job prospects, travel and see the world, live and work abroad, gain a place at university or learn something new for the fun of it.
It is staffed by 12 teachers who are all native speakers in the language they teach, and the modern foreign languages courses are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) which now forms the basis of language teaching and learning in most EU countries.

Nottingham Language Academy based at The Ropewalk in the city is offering modern language classes in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Greek and Japanese, as well as English as a foreign language.
It has been launched by Linda Walker, who has worked in further education for more than 20 years as a college lecturer and then senior manager, and is being staffed by 12 teachers who are all native speakers in the language they teach.
“Nottingham Language Academy is the first teaching establishment of its kind in the city, offering both modern languages and English as a foreign language,” said Linda.
“I’m very excited to be opening something which I hope will be a great resource for both the business community in Nottingham and individuals who want to learn a new language or improve their English, if English is not their first language.”
Classes are being run during the day, evenings and at weekends, and are designed for people who want to improve their job prospects, travel and see the world, live and work abroad, gain a place at university or learn something new for the fun of it.
The modern foreign languages courses are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) which now forms the basis of language teaching and learning in most EU countries.
Taster sessions are being offered, as well as general courses.
Linda, who lives in Long Eaton and is a Business Language Champion in the East Midlands, said: “Our first classes start in October, and are aimed at individuals and businesses, from beginner to advanced level. Our school will offer the opportunity for people to learn in small groups in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
“We offer one-to-one classes and general classes in inspirational surroundings, and can also provide tailor-made sessions for businesses that want training for their staff.”
Through her involvement as a Business Language Champion, Linda is determined that the Nottingham Language Academy will embrace the concept of corporate social responsibility from the start.
This voluntary programme brings together business people using languages with schools, to help show young people how useful a language can be in their careers. It enables businesses to be involved in a number of ways (short talks, workshops and seminars), and Linda hopes that a long term partnership with a local school can be arranged soon after the start of the autumn term.
