Thousands raised for charity after Mount Kilimanjaro climb for BSP Consulting MD

Managing director of an East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering company, David Sumner, has raised around £6,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society after climbing the world’s highest free-standing mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, for charity.
David was also part of a four-man team that raised more than £3,500 for Plumtree Cricket Club. Their efforts have kick started an appeal to develop a second ground at the Nottinghamshire club so the club can provide the best facilities for disabled cricketers and encourage more young players, and those who are less able, to take part in the game.
“It was the most amazing experience, and I am delighted and proud to have raised so much money for two causes that are very close to my heart,” said David. “I’m very grateful to those who sponsored me and donated to either or both fundraising efforts. A big thank you to everyone, including many firms in the construction, development and property sector in the East Midlands who supported my challenge.”
David, who jointly founded Nottingham-based BSP Consulting in 1999, was part of a
30-strong group of people who tackled Mount Kilimanjaro, which is 19,341 feet above sea level.
He undertook the challenge to raise money for MS research as his wife Pat has lived with the debilitating condition for around 20 years. As a member of Plumtree Cricket Club, he also wanted to support the appeal to expand club facilities and climbed the peak with three fellow cricket club members - Steve Daft, Patrick Shortt and Tony Westbrook.
“Physically it was a tough challenge but when we reached the top it was literally breathtaking. Not only are you gasping for breath due to the altitude, the view above the clouds is quite astonishing. It was stunning and well worth the climb,” added David.
BSP Consulting has its headquarters at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and branches in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield. It operates across the UK, providing a comprehensive range of services to all sectors of the construction industry from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

BSP Consulting secures first overseas contracts

Civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has won its first international contracts with appointments on a major highway scheme and building project in Kurdistan.
The company has secured work in the area as part of a major infrastructure development programme in the region.
BSP has been appointed by the Ministry of Culture as checking engineer for a new theatre in the capital, Erbil. Work is due to get underway on site on the Holi Gel theatre project shortly.
The firm has also been appointed to provide project management services on a road scheme in the region’s second city, Slemani. Work on the 40 km dual carriageway, between the towns of Dukan and Chwarqurna, features a number of bridges and is expected to take two years.
BSP, which has its headquarters at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and branches in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, now has two engineers in Kurdistan who are overseeing the work.
“For a while we have been looking at opportunities in the Middle East in places like Abu Dhabi and more recently Kurdistan, and we are very pleased to have secured these two contracts,” said BSP managing director David Sumner.
“The downturn in the UK construction sector gave us the chance to fully explore areas overseas that were looking for British expertise. Our investment in this over the past few years is now coming to fruition, and we hope that further opportunities will be forthcoming.”
Representatives from BSP have travelled to the Middle East on a number of occasions for a series of meetings and trade exhibitions ahead of securing the work. The contracts mark the first overseas developments undertaken by BSP.
“Since forming almost 15 years ago, we have gradually expanded as a company and we now cover the whole of the UK. The recently won work in Kurdistan is our first international development, however,” added David.
As an oil-rich region, Kurdistan is investing heavily in infrastructure, including roads, hospitals, schools, housing and cultural amenities. The Kurdistan Regional Government has a large spending programme underway which involves major public schemes.
BSP is now registered to operate in the region, which is part of Iraq, and hopes to be involved in additional projects in the future, said David.
The company provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

Green light given for rail work to BSP Consulting

Six members of the rail team at civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting have been given the green light to continue with their work on and around operational railway lines on key projects.

The company is now sponsoring a team of staff who have successfully completed Personal Track Safety (PTS) courses at Intertrain (UK) Ltd, Doncaster.

The two-day training sessions that the BSP team undertook qualify members of staff to undertake work on or around an operational railway line.

Meanwhile, Nottingham-based BSP Consulting, with offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, has also recently renewed its Link-up accreditation with Network Rail for another year.

BSP’s rail work involves design and inspection of bridges, culverts, gantries, embankments, line-side structures and drainage.

“We have recently been quoting for more consultancy work in the rail sector, so I am very pleased that six members of our rail team have successfully completed PTS, thereby increasing our trackside technical capacity,” said BSP Consulting managing director David Sumner.

BSP Consulting’s in-house rail team, supplemented by a specialist rail consultant partner, has worked on many different types of rail projects, including the design and detailing of reinforced concrete bases for various electrical gear in transformer compounds, the design of a bespoke £1.5m maintenance facility, used during testing of the Virgin high-speed train, and the surveying of a number of bridges over railway tracks and railway bridges over roads and watercourses.

In addition, BSP was appointed ‘bridge strike examiner’ for the Alstom Transport Virgin high-speed train test track, which was subsequently electrified, to support testing of new London Underground trains, and undertook technical appraisals and site inspections for a £6.3 million proposed new signal installations project on the Carlisle to Newcastle line.

Based in Oxford Street, Nottingham, with offices in Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester and Solly Street, Sheffield, BSP Consulting operates across the UK, offering civil, structural, transportation, environmental and geotechnical engineering services.

ProCon Leicestershire 2011 Award for BSP Consulting scheme

East Midlands civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting is celebrating being part of the team behind a project that took the title of Sustainable Development of the Year at the ProCon Leicestershire 2011 Awards.

The award was presented for the development of Oakham Church of England Primary School.

BSP Consulting, with offices in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, was civil and structural engineer for the £6.2 million scheme, which was a Willmott Dixon project for Rutland County Council.

The news came shortly after another scheme that BSP Consulting worked on – Brookside Meadows in Northampton – was named Sustainable Smaller Housing Project at the Sustainable Housing Awards 2011.

“It is great news for the whole team to hear that the development of Oakham Church of England Primary School has been named Sustainable Development of the Year at the ProCon Leicestershire 2011 Awards,” said BSP business development director Jef Todd.

The building and the engineering system were designed to work as one at the school. Whatever the weather outside, the building makes less demand on heating, ventilation and lighting to keep it pleasant inside. Energy and water-efficient appliances also cut the environmental impact of the school.

The school has space for 280 children, plus 35 pupils with special educational needs and 25 nursery places. Forty square metres of roof area are used for solar heated water. Natural ventilation and occupancy sensing low energy lighting are just two more of the many measures that contribute to the building’s environmental performance and a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’.

BSP Consulting provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

Its services include civil, structural, environmental, transportation and geotechnical engineering.

The company was launched in Nottingham in 1999 and its offices are in Oxford Street, Nottingham, Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester and Vincent House, Solly Street, Sheffield.

BSP Consulting celebrates green award scheme

East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting is celebrating the news that a project the firm worked on has won an accolade in the Sustainable Housing Awards 2011.

Brookside Meadows in Northampton was named Sustainable Smaller Housing Project of the Year at the Inside Housing award ceremony.

BSP Consulting, which is based at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and with offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, was civil and structural engineer for the development of eight rented family homes – the first council housing scheme built by Northampton Borough Council for decades.

Built to level five of the Code for Sustainable Homes, the three and four-bedroom houses include a range of ‘green’ features, such as photovoltaic panels on the roofs to provide renewable energy, heat recovery systems, triple glazing and rainwater harvesting.

“BSP Consulting is very proud to be associated with a project such as this which has been recognised for its approach to sustainable development,” said BSP Consulting managing director David Sumner.

“We are delighted for the whole team to hear that it has won such a high-profile award.”

The awards, which are organised by Inside Housing and the Chartered Institute of Housing, recognise achievement in sustainable projects across the social housing sector.

Northampton Borough Council worked in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), Frank Haslam Milan (FHM), and Orbit Homes on the scheme, which was part of the HCA's Local Authority New Build programme, which funded local authorities to build their own council homes for the first time in decades, benefiting from £450,000 investment. Architects were Baily Garner.

BSP provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

The company was launched in Nottingham in 1999 and its offices are in Oxford Street, Nottingham, Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester and Vincent House, Solly Street, Sheffield.

New framework agreement for East Midlands civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting

Civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has been appointed onto a new framework agreement.

The appointment to the Cross Keys Framework marks the eighth framework agreement achieved by the company, which is based in Nottingham and has offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield.

It means that BSP is now one of the approved consulting engineers for the Cross Keys group, a social housing provider with plans to build around 700 new homes over the next four years.

The group covers an area around Peterborough, and under the framework agreement, BSP will now be able to bid for consultant engineering work for any new social housing schemes that the group builds.

“This is excellent news for BSP Consulting,” said BSP business development director Jef Todd. “Being appointed to a framework agreement is very often the first step in being able to win work with a group or an organisation, so it means that BSP is well placed to tender for potential new schemes that the Cross Keys group may have in the future.”

BSP provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

The company was launched in Nottingham in 1999 and now has offices in Oxford Street, Nottingham, Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester and Vincent House, Solly Street, Sheffield.

BSP Consulting appointed to Castleward Urban Village regeneration scheme in Derby

Civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has been appointed as part of the team developing the exciting £100 million Castleward Urban Village regeneration scheme in Derby.

The company has been secured to provide the full civil, structural and transport engineering services for the project.

Derby City Council named urban renewal and regeneration specialist Compendium Living as preferred partner for the regeneration programme, which will involve the construction of around 800 new homes on a 30-acre brownfield site, as well as new schools and community facilities. The overall scheme will take more than ten years to complete.

Compendium Living is a joint venture between Lovell, the country’s leading provider of affordable homes, and Riverside, the third largest Registered Social Landlord group in England.

“We are extremely pleased to have been chosen to work on this prestigious flagship project for Derby,” said BSP director Jef Todd. “It has tremendous potential for the city and is one of the most exciting developments we have been involved with in the East Midlands.

“The scheme will replace a brownfield area with a sustainable community between Derby city centre and the railway station.”

Work will start in spring 2012 on the first phase of the Urban Village scheme, which will include around 70 homes, 2,500 sq m of commercial space, community facilities, a central park and a boulevard between Derby railway station and the city centre.

Phase 1 will be built on land provided by Derby City Council and the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and helped by acquisitions financed by the Homes and Communities Agency.

Dave Bullock, managing director of Compendium Living said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen by Derby City Council as their preferred partner for this development, and look forward to helping create this exciting new community in the heart of Derby. Lovell has worked with BSP on numerous schemes throughout the region and we are excited to be working with them on such a prestigious development.”

Teams from BSP’s Derby and Nottingham offices are working on the project – providing the full civil, structural and transport engineering services including transportation planning, road and drainage design, flood risk assessments and bridge building expertise.

“We have involvement in many regeneration projects across the UK, both in the past and currently, and we are delighted to be bringing our expertise to a scheme such as this that’s close to home,” added Jef Todd.

BSP’s project leader for the scheme, chartered civil engineer Carol Ell, said: “The team is looking forward to the technical challenges presented by such a prestigious and interesting scheme.”

BSP provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

Role in major north east regeneration scheme for East Midlands and Sheffield civil and structural engineers BSP Consulting

East Midlands and Sheffield civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has been engaged by housing regeneration specialist Lovell to work on the first phase of a multi-million pound mixed-use development that will transform the riverside area of Stockton-on-Tees.

Engineers from BSP Consulting are working on the first phase of the Home Zone part of the scheme at Northshore, a 23-hectare site with over a mile of south facing riverside front along the River Tees.

Future plans for the £300m Northshore development which is being delivered by one of the counties leading regeneration specialists - Muse Developments - include: new offices, homes, shops, hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, leisure facilities and a new campus for the University of Durham, and are expected to bring more than 4,500 new jobs to the area.

Lovell are working in partnership with sister company Muse to deliver this first phase of 50 homes, which it is envisaged will kick-start the development of the wider Northshore scheme.

The former heavy industrial and shipbuilding site close to Stockton town centre has been the subject of a major remediation programme supported by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), and Stockton Borough Council and already features the award-winning Infinity Bridge. Now work is under way on building the first homes on the site.

BSP Consulting engineers are currently designing the details for the drainage and roads for the first phase of the Home Zone, as well as the structural design of the initial 50 plots. The two, three and four-bedroom terrace and semi-detached homes are being designed to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 and each plot will have its own rainwater harvesting tank.

The roads will slope to a central drainage channel, so there are no kerbs as would be expected in a traditional development, and the streets are designed to be shared between pedestrians and motorists.

“Northshore is a very exciting scheme for Stockton-on-Tees, with tremendous potential for the area, and BSP Consulting is delighted to be a part of it,” said David Sumner, managing director of BSP Consulting, which is based in Nottingham and has offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield.

BSP Consulting plays key role in the birth of new maternity facility

An award-winning design and development team featuring BSP Consulting is coming together again to build a new midwifery-led birthing centre near Birmingham.

The East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering firm is working in association with Ashby de la Zouch developer LSP Developments and Tamworth architects West Hart Partnership Ltd to build the new £1 million birthing facility at Sandwell in the West Midlands.

The team has worked together on a number of health schemes, including Freshney Green Primary Care Centre in Grimsby which last year won the HealthInvestor Property of the Year Award.

Planning permission has now been granted for the one-storey birthing centre at Sandwell, which will feature three delivery rooms, each with a birthing pool, and work is expected to get underway on site in March, with completion scheduled for early autumn.

LSP Developments secured by way of 3PD tender (third party developer) the project, which is being launched just as a medical, leisure and learning centre in Blackpool being built by the same team is poised to open.

The Moor Park Health, Leisure and Learning Centre in Blackpool features two GP surgeries, a library, chemist, swimming pool, fitness and exercise studios, a sports hall and outdoor play areas. It is due to open in spring 2011.

“BSP Consulting is delighted to be working once again with LSP Developments and West Hart Partnership Ltd on an innovative health scheme,” said BSP Consulting director Martin Breakwell.

“The midwifery-led facility in the West Midlands will provide purpose-built facilities for women who have a straightforward, uncomplicated pregnancy.”

BSP undertook the structural and civil engineering design aspects of the Sandwell scheme.

The firm carried out the ground investigation, flood risk assessment, and was responsible for all the structural and civil engineering for the award-winning three-storey Freshney Green Medical Centre, which now houses three GP practices with more than 32,000 patients, as well as a range of associated health services such as a pharmacy, podiatry clinic and dentistry.

BSP Consulting provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents. It is based in Oxford Street, Nottingham with offices at Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester, and Solly Street, Sheffield.

BSP Consulting's Sheffield scheme wins an award

Civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting is celebrating the news that a £12 million scheme the company worked on has been named Sheffield’s best new building by people living and working in the city.

Leopold Square – an upmarket complex of bars, restaurants, flats and a hotel - won the People’s Award at the Sheffield Design Awards, sponsored by Sheffield Civic Trust and RIBA Yorkshire.

The scheme involved renovating a number of Grade 2 Victorian buildings of historical interest to create what’s become a top leisure destination in Sheffield.

Nottingham-based BSP Consulting, which also has offices in Leicester, Derby and Sheffield, was civil and structural engineer for the project, which was developed by ASK and Gleeds, and designed by Axis Architecture.

“Leopold Square is a superb development and BSP Consulting is proud to have worked on the project to preserve and enhance such an important part of Sheffield’s history,” said BSP Consulting managing director David Sumner. “It’s an honour for the scheme to receive an award voted for by the public. We are delighted by the news.”

The award is the latest achieved for a scheme worked on by BSP Consulting. Other award-winning schemes include a medical centre, housing developments and a centre for the blind.

“As structural and civil engineers, we are often involved from the very early stages in a building’s life or redevelopment, and it’s exciting to hear when they go on to win awards some time later,” added David Sumner.

The Sheffield Design Awards ceremony was held at the Showroom Cinema in the city. There were hundreds of votes for the People’s Award.

BSP Consulting offers the complete range of consultancy services to the construction industry. Its offices are based at Oxford Street, Nottingham, Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester, and Solly Street, Sheffield.

New Leicester council homes supported by BSP Consulting

BSP Consulting has played a pivotal role in a scheme which has led to the first new council homes in Leicester for more than 30 years.

Keys to the first nine of Leicester City Council’s new council homes, built by Kier Partnership Homes with BSP Consulting as the structural and civil engineer for the project, have been handed to tenants.

The development in Calluna Close, off Heather Road, West Knighton, features seven two-bed/four-person homes, one four-bed/eight-person home and one four-bed/six-person home for a wheelchair-user.

Each is built to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4, and designed to be energy efficient and economical for tenants to heat.

The development is one of five sites across the city, which will create 146 new council homes when complete. Leicester City Council was allocated £7m of funding from the Homes and Communities Agency in 2009 to provide the homes via the last government's Challenge Fund initiative. The council funded approximately £8m towards the project.

BSP, which has offices in Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield, is also involved in two further projects under the Leicester scheme - to build 49 homes at Wycombe Road and 35 homes at Godstow Walk. The Wycombe Road scheme is due for completion at the end of April and the Godstow Walk development due to finish at the end of June.

“We are very pleased to have been involved in this scheme with Leicester City Council and Kier Partnership Homes to bring the first new council homes to Leicester for more than 30 years,” said BSP Consulting managing director David Sumner.

“The Heather Road site was quite a challenging site, with steep slopes and a range of levels, but we are very pleased with the resulting scheme and hope the tenants will be happy in their new homes.”

The company, which is based in Nottingham and has offices in Derby and Leicester, has opened its first office outside of the East Midlands with a branch in Sheffield.

The company has forged strong links with Sheffield over the past few years, working on a number of high-profile projects in the city and its vicinity, including the large SWaN regeneration scheme of the Scowerdons, Weakland and Newstead estates which is on-going.

“We have now decided that the time is right to have a permanent presence in Sheffield and open our fourth office in the city,” said BSP Consulting managing director David Sumner.

“Our aim has been to continue the gradual expansion of BSP Consulting, which we have achieved since launching the company in Nottingham in 1999 by opening offices in Derby and then in Leicester.

“Although these are still challenging times in the construction industry, we are taking an optimistic view and see this as a very positive move towards boosting our future and developing new markets.”

The new office will be run by BSP’s regional manager Russell Thompson, with technical and business support from BSP founding directors Clive Roddick and David Sumner, and associate director Jef Todd.

Based at Vincent House, Solly Street, Sheffield, the new office opened in early September.

BSP’s past projects in Sheffield include the £12 million Leopold Square mixed use development featuring a hotel, music venue, commercial outlets and apartments. The company was also involved in the first phase of the £51 million Kelham Island scheme to regenerate a former industrial area to create 146 apartments, 800 bed student accommodation and 3,000 sqm of commercial and retail space.

The firm is also supporting the next generation in Sheffield to learn about construction and recently delivered a session on sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) to year 10 students taking a diploma in construction. The students are taught at the Construction Design Centre, Sheffield, which is sponsored by Frank Haslam Milan as part of the commitment to the Sheffield Homes project, which BSP is involved in.

BSP Consulting, which has offices at Pride Park, Derby, Oxford Street, Nottingham, and De Montfort Street, Leicester, was founded in 1999 by directors David Sumner, Martin Breakwell, Mark Rayers and Clive Roddick. It now employs around 40 staff, working across all civil and structural engineering disciplines.

It was named Consultant of the Year 2009 at the East Midlands Property Dinner. The firm provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

BSP director Clive Roddick said: “We are very pleased to have opened our fourth office and to now have a permanent presence in the city of Sheffield. It means we now have branches in four major cities, and will help us to raise our profile in the Yorkshire area.”

National award win for medical centre linked to BSP Consulting

BSP Consulting is celebrating the news that a new medical centre which benefited from the firm’s civil, structural and geotechnical engineering expertise has been named the best health property in the UK.

Freshney Green Primary Care Centre in Grimsby scooped the HealthInvestor Property of the Year Award.

BSP’s Derby office provided civil, structural and geotechnical engineering services for the project from conception through to completion in association with Ashby de la Zouch developer LSP Developments and Tamworth architects West Hart Partnership Ltd.

“It is great news to hear that the Freshney Green Primary Care Centre scheme has won the HealthInvestor Property of the Year Award. BSP Consulting is delighted and proud to have been part of the team that helped win this award,” said BSP managing director David Sumner.

The panel of judges commented that “the winning development provided excellent value for money and provided innovative ways to provide for future flexibility. It has a strong, simple design that successfully reconciles the needs of multiple users. “

BSP carried out the ground investigation, flood risk assessment, and were responsible for all the structural and civil engineering for the three-storey medical centre, which now houses three GP practices with more than 32,000 patients, as well as a range of associated health services such as a pharmacy, podiatry clinic and dentistry.

Freshney Green Primary Care Centre was the third medical centre of this type that BSP Consulting has worked on. The firm is currently involved with a similar, but larger, scheme in Blackpool that’s due for completion in 2011.

The 7012 sqm Freshney Green Primary Care Centre was up against strong competition from a short-listed group of seven healthcare premises across the UK that were completed in 2009. The scheme was praised by the judges for its high-quality design, affordability and strong stakeholder relationship.

BSP Consulting, which has offices at Pride Park, Derby, Oxford Street, Nottingham, and De Montfort Street, Leicester, was named Consultant of the Year 2009 at the East Midlands Property Dinner. The firm provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

BSP Consulting gains first framework agreement in education

Civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting has been named an approved supplier to the University of Leicester after being selected for the university’s Consultancy Framework.

BSP Consulting, which has offices in Nottingham, Leicester and Derby, already has three framework agreements with development groups that provide social housing in the Midlands, the North West and Eastern England.

But this is the company’s first framework agreement in the education sector.

“BSP has gained considerable experience working in education by designing engineering for school and college facilities, and is delighted to now be part of the University of Leicester’s Consultancy Framework,” said BSP Consulting managing director David Sumner. “We hope this could lead to further links with education establishments in the region.”

BSP Consulting successfully tendered to be part of the framework agreement, which means the firm can now bid for civil and structural engineering services required by the University of Leicester.

BSP Consulting, which was named Consultant of the Year 2009 at the East Midlands Property Dinner, provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.
