Full Movement Method demos at Wellbeing & Beauty Fair

Therapists who practise the Full Movement Method to treat muscle and joint pain as well as immobility will be giving demonstrations at a Nottinghamshire Wellbeing & Beauty Fair.

The event, which takes place on Sunday 18th November, is the chance to find out more about the therapy, which has been used to help road accident victims, injured sportsmen and women, and others who are suffering pain.

It’s also the opportunity for therapists and those who currently work in the field to discover more about how to train in the Full Movement Method, which has a new course launching early in 2013.

Representatives from both the Full Movement Method training school and its sister organisation the Shanti Yoga School, which teaches yoga teachers, will be at the Wellbeing & Beauty Fair, which is free to attend and runs from 10am to 4pm at Carlton le Willows Academy, Gedling.

The event is due to feature a range of stalls focusing on skincare, nutrition and diet, relaxation, pamper sessions, therapies and treats.

Liz Thomas, who runs the FMM training school and Shanti Yoga School, will be on hand to give more information about how to train with both organisations and where to find a therapist or yoga teacher.

FMM was developed by the late Andy Thomas, from West Bridgford, Nottingham, and uses yoga postures as a diagnostic and treatment tool, alongside soft tissue techniques, deep tissue massage and joint mobilisations.

Andy, who died last year, trained many practitioners in the therapy. The next course in FMM starts in January and runs in Colwick.

Based at the Eco Centre at Home Farm, Screveton near Bingham, its sister organisation Shanti Yoga School offers yoga teacher training and continuous professional development courses, and its next course begins in February.

Full Movement Method therapy training open day event

People interested in finding out more about how to train in a particular type of therapy are being invited to attend an open day later this month.

Practitioners in the Full Movement Method, a unique therapy which is used to treat muscle and joint pains, immobility and malfunction, will be on hand to explain more about the training courses which will get underway in 2012.

FMM was developed by the late Andy Thomas, from West Bridgford, Nottingham, and uses yoga postures as a diagnostic and treatment tool, alongside soft tissue techniques, deep tissue massage and joint mobilisations.

Andy, who died earlier this year, trained many practitioners in the therapy, which has been used to help road accident victims, injured sportsmen and women, and others who are suffering pain.

Now an open day is being held at Southwell Leisure Centre, Nottinghamshire, between 10am and 4pm on Saturday October 15th to give more information to people interested in training to be a FMM therapist.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone looking for a new direction, or who already works in the health sector, to gain new skills,” said FMM practitioner Karen Green.

“It’s ideal for yoga teachers or gym or fitness instructors who want to develop their expertise and increase the services they can offer to clients. It’s also perfect for people who are looking for part-time work to fit around existing commitments, or for those who have taken redundancy and are looking to set themselves up in their own business.

“Andy trained many practitioners in the Full Movement Method, who have gone on to open clinics in Bournemouth, Sheffield and elsewhere, and we are now looking forward to welcoming the next intake of students who are interested in learning the technique.”

The open day will be an opportunity to talk to previous FMM students, as well as tutors in the courses, which run at the premises of the PDW Group at Colwick, Nottingham.

Training in the Diploma in the Full Movement Method is held over a series of weekends, starting on January 28th and 29th. The Full Movement Training School is at the second stage of gaining accreditation for the diploma, with an inspector from the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) due to visit in early November.

A two-day Continuous Professional Development course is also available, plus one-day workshops.

Legacy continues following the re-launch of Shanti Yoga School and the Full Movement Training School

Two businesses run by Nottingham therapist and yoga teacher Andy Thomas have been re-launched following his death earlier this year.

Colleagues, associates and family have joined forces to ensure that the unique therapy devised by Andy to treat muscle and joint pains, immobility and malfunction will continue.

The Full Movement Training School, based at the premises of the PDW Group in Colwick, Nottingham, provides teaching in the Full Movement Method – the unique therapy devised by Andy, who had treated hundreds of patients over many years, including sportsmen and women, actors and road accident victims.

For many years, Andy trained therapists locally, nationally and abroad to practise FMM, and students have gone on to open FMM clinics in Bournemouth, Sheffield and elsewhere.

He also ran Shanti Yoga School, which has trained dozens of yoga teachers in Hatha Yoga. The core postures in yoga are at the heart of initial diagnosis for FMM: Andy saw the flexibility that yoga postures bring as a fundamental key to relieving pain via FMM.

The school has recently gained accreditation from Yoga Alliance UK, which sets standards for yoga, yoga teacher training, yoga teachers, and yoga training providers, and is re-opening in a new home at the eco-centre at Shackerdale Farm, Car Colston, near Bingham.

Andy’s wife Liz Thomas, from West Bridgford, remains a director of both businesses. Andy’s eldest son, Jim Thomas, has been appointed a director of the Full Movement Training School. Jim’s wife Elan Thomas has been appointed a director of Shanti Yoga School.

Liz Thomas said: “Andy was an inspirational teacher, both of yoga teachers and of his unique therapy FMM, as well as a dedicated practitioner who treated hundreds of people in Nottingham, the East Midlands and beyond.

“We are very pleased that his legacy will live on and that those he taught will continue to treat patients and teach yoga, as well as teach others how to practise the unique therapy and yoga that Andy devised.”

Andy, 65, from Melton Road, West Bridgford, died in March 2011 after suffering from lung cancer.
