J Tomlinson appointed on £7.25 million M&E student accommodation contract

J Tomlinson awarded student accommodation contract

J Tomlinson has won a £7.25 million contract to provide mechanical and electrical engineering services for a new 922-bed student accommodation scheme.
The company has been appointed by main contractor Galliford Try to undertake the M&E work on the £52.5 million development in Paradise Street, Coventry.
The new halls will be built across three blocks of three, 12 and 14 storeys on the site of a former garage close to the city centre, with an additional two low-rise house blocks. Further landscaping will also be created including a recreational area for the students, as well as office and maintenance facilities for the proposed management company AXO Student Living.
J Tomlinson has been secured to design, supply, install and commission the mechanical, electrical and plumbing services for the project by Galliford Try’s Building East Midlands business, which has been appointed by The Elite Group to develop the scheme.
“J Tomlinson has wide experience of providing both integrated building services or standalone mechanical and electrical and plumbing services for clients, across many sectors, and we are very pleased to have been appointed by Galliford Try on this student accommodation development,” said Tony O’Toole, J Tomlinson’s managing director – mechanical and electrical.
“This is a key contract for our M&E team and throughout the bid we used our ‘One Team’ approach for all items, working collaboratively alongside our customers and suppliers. We have a good working relationship with Galliford Try and are delighted to be part of the team bringing this scheme to life.”
The project is due to start shortly, with completion expected in August 2019. J Tomlinson’s project manager will be Phil Paddock.
Nottingham-based J Tomlinson, which also has an office in Canwell, Sutton Coldfield, operates primarily across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire. Building services company J Tomlinson releases time lapse video of new ambulance station

A time lapse video showing the construction of a new community ambulance station for West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) has been unveiled by construction services company J Tomlinson.
The 90-second video shows the building at Etruria Valley, Stoke-on-Trent, taking shape over 32 weeks.

Appointed by St. Modwen to build the station, J Tomlinson recently handed over the 18,865 sq ft development. WMAS has since re-located from Penkhull to the purpose-built hub facility and community ambulance station, allowing the expansion of the service to meet the needs of Stoke’s growing population.
Martin Gallagher, managing director (construction) at Nottingham-based contractor J Tomlinson, said: “J Tomlinson was very pleased to have been appointed by St. Modwen to build the new ambulance facility serving the North Staffordshire community. This is the latest emergency services building that we have constructed and follows an award-winning new fire station in Nottingham completed last year for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. It is also the third scheme we have constructed for St. Modwen.
“In addition, it also continued our existing relationship with West Midlands Ambulance Service, for whom we currently maintain 92 sites in the region. We are delighted to have now handed over the facility.
“It’s fascinating to watch the project taking shape from start to finish in just 90 seconds in our time lapse video.”
The new station is being used mainly for the maintenance and preparation of ambulance vehicles, including the repair, cleaning, re-stock and storage of ambulances and supplies, ensuring that ambulances are stocked and ready to go at the start of a shift. Part of the building also provides offices along with training space and facilities for staff.
The facility is located at St. Modwen’s Etruria Valley Business Park development, and joins major companies including Vodafone, DPD and Bet365. Etruria Valley is strategically located off the A53 dual carriageway and within 400 metres of the A500 urban expressway, linking Stoke to junctions 15 and 16 on the M6.
Euan Lindsay, Development Manager at St. Modwen, said: “It’s great to see the project completed and WMAS now operational at Etruria Valley; like our other occupiers, they have found an ideal location, with easy access to the A500, the comprehensive facilities at Festival Park and the city centre.
“We are seeing significant ongoing investment in Etruria Valley and look forward to further developments coming on stream.”
J Tomlinson, which is based at Beeston near Nottingham, and operates across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire, provides a range of integrated building solutions including construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), and facilities management.

Building solutions firm J Tomlinson shortlisted for two Energy Efficiency awards

Mark Davis of J Tomlinson
J Tomlinson is a proud finalist in not one – but two – categories of the 2017 National Energy Efficiency & Healthy Homes Awards.
The company has been shortlisted for ‘National Social Responsibility Company of the Year’, a title that looks at organisations that have had a positive impact within their local communities – particularly in helping to meet social responsibility targets. Following taking home the title of ‘RHI Installer of the Year’ at the regional awards for the West Midlands, which took place during May, the company has also been shortlisted for the national title.
The nomination is based around a ground source heat pump installation at two sites in Shropshire which is continuing to help residents at housing group Bromford save money, cut carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency.
Mark Davis, CEO of J Tomlinson, commented: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted in two prestigious categories of the National Energy Efficiency & Healthy Homes Awards. As a business with strong social and sustainability values and a passion for supporting our local communities, we are proud to have been recognised for our ongoing work. Huge congratulations to two of our clients, Ashfield District Council and Bromford Homes, both of whom have been shortlisted for the ‘National Housing Association/Landlord of the Year’ award.”
Launched in 2015, the National Energy Efficiency & Healthy Homes Awards recognise and celebrate the outstanding work being undertaken within the energy efficiency sector, helping people to reduce their energy bills, tackle fuel poverty and minimise carbon emissions.
Winners will be announced at the official awards ceremony taking place on September 29th at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, based at the Birmingham NEC.

J Tomlinson invests in health and safety with new defibrillators

J Tomlinson with the new defibrillators
Growing integrated building services company J Tomlinson has continued its investment in health and safety by installing life-saving defibrillators across key sites.
The Nottingham-based firm has purchased 22 defibrillators to be located at the firm’s permanent offices in the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire, as well as on all major project sites while work is ongoing.
The equipment, which can give a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest, could be a potential life-saver to employees or members of the public who become ill.
“As a company, J Tomlinson continues to strive to provide a safer working environment and keep our employees, visitors and the local community safe and healthy,” said Richard Ball, Head of Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality, at J Tomlinson, which has its headquarters in Lilac Grove, Beeston.
“Although no training is required to operate the defibrillators, the business has also invested in AED (automated external defibrillator) training for primary users and this will be supported with Tool Box Talk training to all associated first aiders to familiarise them with the equipment where required.”
J Tomlinson, which provides a range of integrated building solutions including construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), and facilities management, has invested in 22 Lifepak CR2 defibrillators that are fully automated.
The company, which employs more than 420 staff across its offices and sites, is committed to excellence in safety, health, well-being and quality – believing it is integral to maintaining a sustainable integrated building solutions business. It has its own internal health and safety committee, takes part in special health and safety weeks, and runs its own ‘Safetys’ awards for colleagues who show initiative in these areas.
“Automated external defibrillators in the workplace can help save lives, as access to an AED in the first couple of minutes after cardiac arrest improves a patient’s chances of survival,” added Richard.  “They are simple to use, so it makes sense to have them available in case of emergency.”

J Tomlinson starts work on Midlands industrial and warehouse scheme

The Steelpark Trading Estate, Wednesfield
J Tomlinson has begun construction of a multimillion-pound speculative development of a range of industrial and warehouse units at a key Midlands site.
Commercial property company Goold Estates expects the scheme of about 70,000 sq ft of units at Steelpark Trading Estate, Wednesfield, in the West Midlands to attract significant investment and generate dozens of new jobs.
Managing director (construction) of Nottingham-based J Tomlinson, Martin Gallagher, said: “We are very pleased to be involved in this speculative development. As a company, J Tomlinson has wide experience of designing and constructing industrial and warehouse units across the Midlands for a range of clients. We are delighted to be working with Goold Estates for the first time.
“Our presence in the West Midlands has gone from strength to strength, supported by our growing office in Canwell, near Sutton Coldfield, and we are looking forward to continuing our relationship with existing clients in the region and also developing relationships with new clients like Goold Estates – helping them to create first-class developments.”
The Steelpark Trading Estate development is expected to reach practical completion early in 2018.
Dominic Goold, managing director of Walsall-based Goold Estates, said: “It is great to see construction underway. We are looking forward to delivering a high-quality development, which will attract investment and jobs to the region.
“The Steelpark site, which is adjacent to the Tata Steel Automotive Service Centre, has been vacant and available for development for many years. We acquired it in September last year and we’ve acted quickly to secure planning consent and get the development underway.
“All of the units are being built speculatively, for sale or lease, because we are confident there is a strong demand in the market. These will be high quality industrial units in a sought-after location with excellent access to the motorway network, being just 4.6 miles west of J10 M6 and four miles south of J1 M54.”
Finance Birmingham has arranged speculative development finance to help fund the project through the West Midlands Combined Authority Collective Investment Fund CIF.
Councillor John Reynolds, City of Wolverhampton Council Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: “There is £3.7 billion of investment on site or in the pipeline in the City of Wolverhampton and this is another boost for our regeneration plans.
“The Steelpark Trading Estate development will bring back to life a site that has been redundant for many years, while at the same time protect wildlife in the area. It shows there is confidence in investing in Wolverhampton and most importantly it will bring dozens of jobs to the city.”
J Tomlinson, which last year opened a new West Midlands headquarters at Canwell after experiencing expansion in the region, provides a range of integrated building solutions including construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), and facilities management.  It operates across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire.
