Sherwood Truck and Van appoints Bob McGarry as regional sales manager

Sherwood Truck and Van, the East Midlands commercial vehicle group, has appointed Bob McGarry to a new role of regional sales manager.

Bob, from Killamarsh, North East Derbyshire, will be based at the company’s Sheffield site in Highfield Lane, working directly for group sales director Robin Hulse.

The 53-year-old, who enjoys golf and fishing in his spare time, has spent all his working life in the truck industry and his appointment brings him back to Sherwood after leaving in 2006 – for a spell selling refuse lorries to local authorities.

He started work as a mechanic for his first employer, working his way up to be branch manager before joining a contract hire and rental company.

His first period with Sherwood began in 1991 when he worked as a truck salesman, covering South Yorkshire, before becoming group fleet sales manager in 2002.

Although based in Sheffield, he is hoping to be on the road as often as possible.

“Face-to-face contact with the customer is a fundamental sales tool and I will be expecting me and my team to be out there as much as possible,” said Bob.

“It’s a new role, but taking on some existing responsibilities. I will concentrate on growing the business while giving good leadership.

“Both my staff and Sherwood Truck and Van customers can expect honesty, integrity and a professional response to any challenges as they arise. I firmly believe in the phrase ‘if you snooze, you lose’ and I will be instilling this in all my staff.”

Sherwood Truck and Van, with its headquarters in South Normanton, Derbyshire, is part of West Bromwich-based Ian Guest Holdings, one of the UK’s largest independently owned commercial vehicle dealers.

The group covers an area that includes the West Midlands, North Wales, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and South Yorkshire.

Regional director responsible for the four Sherwood locations, Helen Waterfall, said: “It’s good to have Bob back on board.

“His working life has been spent in the truck business so he brings a wealth of experience, good contacts and a strong reputation to the team.”

Sherwood is a leading supplier of new and used commercial vehicles, established in 1978. As well as its headquarters in South Normanton and a branch in Sheffield, the group also has branches in Lenton, Nottingham, and in Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent. The company also maintains, services and repairs commercial vehicles across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire and most of Cheshire.

Sherwood Truck and Van supplies IMR Transport with six new Iveco Stralis tractor units

Sherwood Truck and Van, the East Midlands commercial vehicle group, has supplied six Iveco Stralis Active Space trucks to haulage firm IMR Transport.

They are now part of IMR’s 50-strong fleet operating from its base in Coventry Lane, Bramcote, near Nottingham.

IMR owner Ian Robertson said the Iveco Stralis AS440S45TXP was an impressive vehicle but he had also been persuaded by South Normanton-based Sherwood Truck and Van’s service, particularly the four-year Peace of Mind Supreme Repair and Maintenance package.

“We rented an Iveco Stralis Active Space during a busy period last year and the drivers were impressed. It also gave us excellent fuel returns,” said Mr Robertson.

“We have our own workshops but it is easier and far more cost-effective to have our trucks looked after by Sherwood.

“Like anyone with a mixed fleet, we get to know the strengths and weaknesses of the various manufacturers and their dealers very quickly.

“And I have to say we’re happy with Iveco and we’re delighted with the support we’ve had from Sherwood. They understand what running tractors is all about.”

Sherwood’s ‘Peace of Mind’ Repair and Maintenance package offers three levels of cover, ranging from the basic legal requirements of service and inspections, through to the full cover. This includes the legal requirements plus preventative maintenance inspections, clutch and brake wear, repairs arising from material or manufacturing defects, plus 24-hour emergency roadside assistance and recovery.

Sherwood Truck and Van, part of West Bromwich-based Ian Guest Holdings, one of the UK’s largest independently owned commercial vehicle dealers, has branches in Lenton, Nottingham, Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, South Normanton near Alfreton, and Highfield Lane, Sheffield.

The group covers an area that includes the West Midlands, North Wales, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire and South Yorkshire.

Regional director responsible for the four Sherwood locations, Helen Waterfall, said: “We understand how critical reliability is for our customers. That’s why we work so hard on our repair and maintenance packages. It’s good to know that they are paying off with deals like this from IMR.”

Sherwood is a leading supplier of new and used commercial vehicles, established in 1978. The company also maintains, services and repairs commercial vehicles across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire and most of Cheshire.

IMR Transport was set up as a one-man operation 17 years ago and is now a thriving haulage business run by Ian Robertson and his wife Lynne. It has 20,000sq ft of warehousing at its Bramcote base and a loyal customer base.

Previously responsible for health and safety at Sherwood’s four sites – in South Normanton, near Alfreton; Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent; Lenton, Nottingham; and in Sheffield – he now takes care of 15 sites stretching from Sheffield to Cambridge.

The 50-year-old joined Sherwood Truck and Van in May 2010 as health and safety/projects co-ordinator based at the company’s Nottingham site. His new appointment follows the acquisition of Sherwood Truck and Van earlier this year by West Bromwich-based Ian Guest Holdings.

His is now responsible for site maintenance and security, prioritising repairs, obtaining estimates and renegotiating contracts with suppliers. He will also be co-ordinating health and safety, waste control and considering the business’s environmental impact.

Greg said: “This role shows that Guest is willing to adopt best practice. I was already being used to cover the role for Sherwood so it made sense for me to take on group-wide responsibilities.

“Bringing everything together will allow other line managers to focus on their primary roles.

“I’m currently clocking up about 350 miles a week getting around the sites but I know this will increase as the role develops.”

Greg started work as an apprentice light vehicle mechanic with a firm in Nottingham, worked with a main dealer for 16 years becoming a master technician, before spending eight years with another motor group at branches in Nottingham, Leicester and Northampton.

He then worked for a Leicester dealership as after sales manager, and spent the three years before joining Sherwood Truck and Van working for a multi-franchised dealership in Lincoln as service manager and health and safety co-ordinator.

Regional director responsible for the four Sherwood locations, Helen Waterfall, said: “It’s great to see someone from Sherwood moving into a group role following the acquisition.

“I know Greg will use his talent, knowledge and expertise to boost efficiency and cost effectiveness.”
