Focus Consultants team skydives for charity

Three brave employees from Focus Consultants are taking the plunge for charity with a tandem sky dive in aid of a cause close to their hearts.
The parachute jump will also be part of the celebrations to mark the 21st birthday of Focus Consultants, which is based in Nottingham and has offices in Leicester, London, Boston and Aubourn near Lincoln.
The team will be raising money for St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, which gave care and support to the wife and family of Focus senior building surveyor Darren Booker. Elizabeth Booker was 47 when she passed away last year following her diagnosis of a rare form of Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Darren, who works in the Boston office of Focus, will be joined by two colleagues, 16-year-old admin apprentice Victoria Bell, who also works in the Boston office, and sustainability surveyor Gareth Morris, who is based in Leicester. Their tandem parachute jump is scheduled to take place at Langar Airfield near Nottingham on Sunday 13th September.
Darren, from Bassingham, near Lincoln, said: “This is my personal challenge in tribute to Liz, who was so very brave in facing her illness and no matter how she felt she would always have a smile for you.
“St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice gave us both the support and care that was so very priceless at the most difficult of times. They were not the only organisation to help Liz but they were there right to the end. This challenge is what I have wanted to do for many years but Liz would not let me for fear of something going wrong and losing me.”
Between them, the trio hope to raise more than £1,200. Focus Consultants, which offers a range of services, including funding and economic development, regeneration expertise, energy consultancy and chartered surveying services, is donating £300 to the cause as part of the firm’s 21st birthday celebrations. The company has also chosen St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice as its charity for 2015/2016 and earlier this year it handed over £230 after staging its annual golf day.
It will be the first experience of its kind for all three volunteers when they take the plunge next month.
Victoria, a former pupil of Haven High Academy in Boston, said: “I wanted to do the challenge for the experience. It is for a great charity so I thought there's no better time to do it as I'll be able to raise money to help at the same time.”
Meanwhile, Gareth said: “I am doing the jump because I feel passionate about the charity in question and have always wanted to do a skydive. This is an opportunity to do something from my bucket list but also help the less fortunate at the same time.”
Housing group Longhurst has also donated £100 to the challenge. Liz Booker had worked at the group for 23 years and was business development co-ordinator there before she passed away.
Trevor Newton, Focus partner based at the Boston office, said: “We are full of admiration for Darren, Victoria and Gareth, who have stepped forward for this challenge and are raising money for such a deserving charity. Everyone at Focus Consultants wishes them all the best.”
The intrepid trio will take part in a 10,000 feet freefall parachute jump, reaching speeds of more than 120mph as they dive through the air. They will freefall (without the parachute deployed) for several thousand feet, harnessed to a professional parachute instructor at all times throughout the descent, with the instructor in control of the landing.
St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice has been providing specialist palliative and end-of-life care for more than 30 years across Lincolnshire. In the last 12 months St Barnabas has cared for and supported 1,215 people within the Boston area through their day therapy, hospice at home, out-patient and in-patient services. The charity has to raise more than £4 million this year to be able to provide these services to its patients and their families.
Each of the three volunteers has their own fundraising page and would welcome any donations:

Regeneration scheme appointment for J Tomlinson

Contractor J Tomlinson has been appointed on the second phase of a major regeneration scheme in the West Midlands.
Earlier this year the Nottingham-based company began work on phase one constructing 11 new industrial units at St. Modwen’s Albion Gateway project at Burton-upon-Trent. These are due to be completed in November.
Now the firm has been appointed to build a further seven new industrial premises as part of the second phase of the 10-acre, mixed-use development which is replacing part of the former Pirelli tyre factory with a mixture of warehouse, trade counter, industrial units, restaurants, a public house and a hotel.
Construction managing director at J Tomlinson Martin Gallagher said: “There were strong levels of interest in the first phase of this high-profile development and we are very pleased to have now been appointed to build the second phase of the Albion Gateway scheme.
“This is the latest in a number of regeneration projects that J Tomlinson has worked on and is great news for the East Staffordshire economy, as well as for us as a company.”
The contracts have supported additional job opportunities at J Tomlinson. The scheme is also providing work for local subcontractors and suppliers as both phases of the project are carried out.
Phase one and two will bring almost 60,000 sq ft of new business and industrial premises to the market.
Located on the main arterial route to the north east of Burton-on-Trent’s town centre, the scheme benefits from its close proximity to major transport links, including the A38 and A50. St. Modwen, the UK’s leading regeneration specialist, is investing in the local road infrastructure, which will include two new dedicated junctions to the scheme as well as local highway improvements on the Derby Road.
J Tomlinson, which offers services in construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical engineering, energy efficiency, renewables and facilities management, is based in Lilac Grove, Beeston, near Nottingham, and has regional offices across the East and West Midlands.
Earlier this year J Tomlinson was named in Deloitte’s Businesses Leading Britain 2014 report, which provides insights into the UK’s 1,000 fastest-growing businesses with annual revenues between £30 million and £1 billion.
Recently the company announced four key contracts in the West Midlands, potentially worth £25 million. The company was appointed to a four-year framework contract by Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police covering servicing, maintenance, reactive repairs and minor works which has a potential value of up to £9.1 million over the lifetime of the agreement.
The firm also won a five-year contract worth £10 million to replace kitchens and bathrooms in around 1,600 properties in Birmingham, Coventry, Stoke, Walsall and Wolverhampton for housing organisation Midland Heart. In addition, J Tomlinson was appointed on two contracts in Sutton Coldfield for a new 65-bed care home and a new building for Sutton Coldfield Conservative Club.
These contracts are contributing to the continued growth of the company which is expected to see its turnover increase from £54 million in 2014 to £67 million this year, and with a forecast to rise again next year to £85-£90 million.

Lamb deaths prompt appeal to dog owners from Croots Farm Shop

Derbyshire farm shop owner Steve Croot has urged dog owners to keep their pets on leads after three of his lambs died in two days following suspected attacks from dogs.
Steve feared that his flock may have contracted an illness or disease when he discovered the dead lambs. But after a post mortem examination on the third animal by a vet, it appears that the animals had been attacked, said Steve.
He has now posted notices on the public footpath that crosses the field at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, near Duffield, where he keeps the sheep, appealing to owners to keep their dogs on leads.
Steve, a dog owner himself, said: “After finding three dead lambs in two days I wondered if we had a disease so I had a post mortem carried out on the third animal and the vet confirmed there were puncture marks in the skin and said it was a dog that had attacked it. It wasn’t a fox that was responsible because foxes tend to chew their victims.
“I am a dog owner and dog lover myself, and I know that the vast majority of dog owners are very responsible and would hate to think their pet had caused the death of a lamb. I’ve read about cases recently reported by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust in which dogs, some as old as 11, had attacked sheep, having never done it before. The attacks very much came out of the blue and their owners were distraught. However well behaved a dog is, at the end of the day it’s an animal and it can behave unpredictably.
“The best way to avoid anything like this happening is for anyone out walking their dog in the countryside to please keep their animals under control, on a lead, when there are sheep and lambs around.”
Steve’s flock delivered 100 lambs this spring, with the animals grazing around the fields close to Croots Farm Shop. He breeds and rears the lambs to sell in the farm shop.
It is against the law to let a dog be dangerously out of control anywhere. A court can decide that your dog is dangerously out of control if it injures someone’s animal.

Focus Consultants helping to determine the future of the iconic Vulcan XH558

Nottingham-based Focus Consultants has been working with the Vulcan to the Sky Trust to undertake an options appraisal to identify the best possible future for the iconic aircraft Avro Vulcan XH558, The Spirit of Great Britain.
The Vulcan was flown by the RAF for 33 years between 1960 and 1993. She was built to deliver Britain’s first atomic bomb, ‘Blue Danube’, as a deterrent against Soviet aggression during the Cold War. Through fundraising and restoration work, widely believed to be the most complex technical heritage project ever undertaken, she was returned to flight in 2007 and has since performed in numerous air shows across the UK and Europe.
However, for a range of technical reasons, the aircraft is coming towards the end of its flying life. The Vulcan to the Sky Trust, which owns and operates the aircraft, is keen that there will be continuing public benefits once she has stopped flying in the form of education and inspirational activities around the aircraft aimed at helping to solve the shortage of engineers and technical staff that is currently a significant challenge for British businesses.
In recognition of this, the Vulcan to the Sky Trust has been awarded £10,000 funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Start Up Programme to identify the most effective future role for the best conserved large British aircraft of her era after she is grounded.
For the last three months, Focus has been working with the Trust to examine a range of options which will allow the Vulcan to maintain the value endowed upon it by the public and enable her to continue to deliver substantial public benefit.
Dr Robert Pleming, chief executive of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust said: “We are thrilled the Heritage Lottery Fund has recognised the potential of Vulcan XH558 to bring value to our economy and pleasure to the public even when she is no longer flying.  We have been working with Focus to look at how XH558 can continue inspiring young people with the excitement of engineering and innovation, helping to solve the UK’s technical skills shortage.”
Associate at Focus, Heather Frecklington, said: “The Vulcan has incredible significance, as a powerful reminder of the knife-edge tension of the Cold War, an innovative engineering triumph and a symbol that continues to pull on the heart strings of the British public. It is essential that her revered position is maintained once she has been permanently grounded and is not lost for future generations.  At Focus we are proud to be working with the Trust to identify an option that not only ensures her survival in outstanding condition, but also ensures she continues to inspire and benefit the public who have shown boundless support for her hitherto.”
The Vulcan is currently based at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster.
Focus, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary during 2014, offers a range of services in the heritage and development sector, including funding and economic development, regeneration expertise, energy consultancy and chartered surveying services.
Since its creation in 1994, Focus has secured more than £925 million of grant assistance and delivered more than £1 billion of projects and programmes - making it one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the country.
It has worked on a range of high-profile projects in the arts, heritage and tourism sector, including some of the major museums across the UK, and important historical and ecclesiastical sites.
As well as its head office at Phoenix Business Park in Nottingham, it also has branches in London, Leicester, and Boston and Aubourn in Lincolnshire.

Business support organisation The Food and Drink Forum stages its annual networking event

Around 85 guests attended the flagship event of business support organisation The Food and Drink Forum.
Staged at Southwell Racecourse, the annual supper is one of the largest networking events for the East Midlands food and drink sector and attracted delegates from across the region.
The Food and Drink Forum, which is based at Southglade Food Park, Nottingham, has members across the district, including manufacturers, food service operators and businesses providing services for the food and drink sector.
The supper heard from several key speakers including Beckie Rowland of bakery giant Greggs who spoke about the recruitment of ex-offenders and the importance of this within the community.
Oliver Brown from Derbyshire family firm Bluebells Real Dairy Ice Cream also spoke about the difficulties milk farmers face and farm diversification as a solution to this.
He also added that the Food and Drink Forum had played a vital role in helping his company to achieve SALSA approval allowing them to expand to sell to the National Trust.
Other speakers included Dips Patel from Loughborough-based Mistry and Co. who spoke of their mission to use food to educate and inspire others.
Key industry figures from across Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland attended the event which also featured displays by Nottingham Trent University, The Federation of Small Businesses, Chemex and From The Notebook Ltd.
Food and Drink Forum chairman Peter Knight said that the food and drink sector had faced an interesting and exciting year, speaking in particular of the success of the Leicester Food Park, with the Forum having recently secured the management of the park in a joint bid with the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire Chamber of Commerce.
He said: “I am very pleased with how the first members’ supper at Southwell Racecourse has gone. The evening has been a great success with members’ produce enjoyed by around 85 guests and thought-provoking speeches.”
Peter Knight also thanked the Local Enterprise Partnership D2N2 for helping the Forum move forward once again.
Chairman of D2N2 Peter Richardson said the Food and Drink sector was key in creating new jobs.
He said: “The Food and Drink Forum are vital in providing businesses in the private sector with everything they need to drive themselves forward.
“In the East Midlands we are at the heart of the UK’s economy and we need to strive to be at the heart of Europe’s too. However, to do this the private sector needs a voice, and the Food and Drink Forum offers companies that voice.”
The Food and Drink Forum was founded in 1988 as a not-for-profit, membership-led organisation to stimulate and support the sustainable growth and development of the food and drink industry in the East Midlands.
Its aims include championing the food and drink sector in the East Midlands, developing strategic influencing partnerships within and outside the East Midlands, and acting as a centre for information and knowledge on all subjects relating to the food and drink sector in the region.
It also aims to stimulate and facilitate sustainable change within companies of all sizes across the food chain, generate income and secure resources to meet the needs of a high-quality service, and promote the food and drink sector to future employees through education and the raising of skills.

J Tomlinson lands ground-breaking solar power role

Construction, maintenance and energy efficiency expert J Tomlinson has been appointed as part of a pioneering community solar investment project.
Chase Community Solar, a community benefit society in Staffordshire, is believed to be the first scheme in the UK aiming to put solar panels on the roofs of council houses funded by a community share offer.
The project aims to raise at least £400,000 to install solar panels on up to 400 council-owned bungalows in Cannock Chase, Staffordshire.
Energy efficiency experts at J Tomlinson have been selected to fit the panels, which are designed to help council tenants cut their energy bills through free electricity generated by the solar photovoltaic panels.
The integrated building solutions company, which is based in Beeston, Nottingham and has a network of regional offices including a presence in Burton-on-Trent, has considerable expertise in the field of PV panels, having fitted more than 40,000 panels over the past four years on a range of buildings including schools, offices, social housing, sheltered housing and private homes.
Chief executive of J Tomlinson, Mark Davis, said: “Cannock Chase is the second most deprived area in Staffordshire after Stoke-on-Trent, with high levels of fuel poverty. Council tenants benefiting from the solar panels can expect to save up to £250 a year on their energy bills.
“As a company that offers energy efficient solutions as well as energy generation technologies, J Tomlinson is very pleased to be a part of the team involved in this pioneering community solar investment project, which is the first of its kind in the country.”
The firm currently works in the area for Stafford Borough Council and housing associations Midland Heart, Trent & Dove Housing, Bromford Housing and Accord Housing Association on servicing, maintenance and repair contracts.
The company has previously installed photovoltaic panels for Trent & Dove Housing on their head office in Burton-on-Trent, and is involved in gas servicing, maintenance and repairs for the group.
Investors in Chase Community Solar, which is supported by Cannock Chase Council, are being offered a forecast annual return of 7% for the 20-year lifetime of the scheme, with a minimum investment of just £100. Tax relief of 30% under the Enterprise Investment Scheme is also expected to be available. Returns are generated by the government’s Feed-in Tariff subsidy, and any excess funds will be used to build up a local community benefit fund.
Mike Kinghan, chair of Chase Community Solar, said: “We believe this is the first community energy project in the UK focusing on council house tenants. If it’s successful it will blaze the way for further community energy projects with councils and other social housing providers. There are many more social housing roofs across the UK and there is no reason why every suitable roof should not host solar PV.”
The next launch night for the scheme takes place in Lichfield on Tuesday November 25th in the Lichfield Room, Wade Street Church (Frog Lane entrance), WS13 6HL, at 7.30pm.
J Tomlinson, which is a privately owned company founded in the 1950s, has a substantial heritage and wealth of experience in delivering integrated building solutions tailored to both public and private sector clients.

Steve Croot, of Croots Farm Shop, named Derbyshire Local Food Hero 2014

Steve Croot, of Croots Farm Shop, Duffield, accepts the Local Food Hero award from celebrity chef Valentine Warner and Councillor Janet Hill, vice chair of Derbyshire County Council.
Farm shop owner Steve Croot has been crowned Derbyshire Local Food Hero 2014 at the Derbyshire Food and Drink Awards.

Steve, who runs Croots Farm Shop near Duffield, Derbyshire, was presented with his prestigious award at a ceremony hosted by celebrity chef Valentine Warner.

“I am absolutely thrilled and incredibly proud to be named as Local Food Hero 2014 for Derbyshire. There is some fantastic local food produced in Derbyshire, and I am honoured to be part of it all,” said Steve.

“When we launched Croots Farm Shop in June 2008 the recession started, but we’ve had amazing support from customers, staff and our suppliers, and Croots has gone from strength to strength – so much so that we’ve expanded our butchers’ department and last year we extended our Shires Eatery to cater for demand.
“We stock a wide range of items produced on our doorstep, as well as many from across the region and beyond, which has proved to be a winning combination. Our sausages, pies and other meat products have won numerous national awards, thanks to the talented staff we have on our team.

“I am very passionate about Croots, about good quality food and drink, and about Derbyshire, which has been my home for many years, and I am delighted to receive this award. Well done to all the other winners in all the other categories and also to all the finalists.”

Croots Farm Shop, based at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, was also a finalist in the best Derbyshire breakfast category of the Derbyshire Food and Drink Awards, which were presented at a ceremony held at Chesterfield Football Club's Proact Stadium.

Councillor Joan Dixon, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Jobs, Economy and Transport, said: “Derbyshire has so many fantastic food and drink businesses that it is getting harder each year to pick a winner.

“They all play an important role in the Derbyshire’s economy and we are delighted that our awards give them all much deserved recognition.”

Steve’s passion for Derbyshire food and drink, good quality food and drink in general, and for the county, manifests itself in many ways. He is a keen supporter of new and fledgling producers, and he regularly visits schools and other organisations to give talks about food and drink.

One of the farm shop’s adopted charities is Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre, which was established in 1891 to give disadvantaged Derbyshire children holidays in Skegness, Lincolnshire, and currently provides 450 holiday places per season for boys and girls aged from eight to 14.

Croots Farm Shop employs 21 people and sells products from more than 40 producers from within a 50-mile radius. It has won a number of Great Taste Awards, which are regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the fine food industry.

Croots Farm Shop is open Sundays from 10am to 4pm (Shires Eatery until 3.45pm), and from Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (Shires Eatery until 4.30pm). It is closed on Mondays.

Derbyshire baker Luke Evans Bakery joins National Doughnut Week 2012

Derbyshire baker Luke Evans Bakery is giving customers the perfect excuse to dive into a doughnut by taking part in National Doughnut Week and raising cash for charity.

The baker will be donating 10p from the sale of each doughnut to charity during the week, which runs from Saturday May 12th to Saturday May 19th.

National Doughnut Week has raised more than £735,000 for the Children’s Trust since it was first launched – and this year organisers hope to collect a further £30,000 for the good cause.

This gives everyone the perfect excuse to treat themselves to a delicious doughnut or two, said Luke Evans Bakery managing director David Yates.

“Last year our customers really got behind National Doughnut Week and munched their way through 1,200, which meant we could hand over a decent donation to the Children’s Trust,” said David. “We hope customers will support this good cause again this year.”

Luke Evans Bakery, based at Riddings near Alfreton, will be adding two new doughnuts to its range during National Doughnut Week – chocolate filled and custard filled doughnuts. Alongside its jam and cream doughnuts, the products will be on sale at the firm’s shop in Greenhill Lane, Riddings.

Luke Evans Bakery is one of many participating bakers across the UK helping to raise money for the Children’s Trust, which is a national charity that provides care, education and therapy for children with multiple disabilities and complex health needs.

The firm supplies around 300 trade and wholesale customers across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire, including shops, schools, delis and Pride Park - the home of Derby County Football Club.

Luke Evans Bakery was founded more than 200 years ago by Henry Evans, who named the business after his son. Today it is a modern company with a team of fully trained craft bakers operating 24 hours a day turning out breads, cakes and savoury products.

Luke Evans Bakery hits the right note with community donation

A community organisation which has been entertaining local people for almost 80 years is to receive a donation from Luke Evans Bakery to mark National Craft Bakers’ Week.

The bakery at Riddings, near Alfreton in Derbyshire, pledged to give one pound for every year it had been running to a local good cause as part of its celebrations for the special week.

Now it has chosen Ripley and Alfreton Musical Theatre Company as the beneficiary of the £207 donation.

“Luke Evans Bakery has been a key part of the Derbyshire community for more than 200 years and we are delighted to support a community organisation that also has a long history in the area,” said Luke Evans Bakery managing director David Yates.

“National Craft Bakers’ Week was an excellent opportunity for us to promote what we do, with a range of different events. We had a number of deserving good causes apply for our donation, but we could only choose one and we decided that Ripley and Alfreton Musical Theatre Company was to be the beneficiary. I hope the money will help them to carry on performing and entertaining in the future.”

The organisation, which is self-funding, relies entirely on sponsorship from local companies, voluntary contributions and fund-raising activities to help produce its shows.

Vice chair Kate Viles said: “We are very grateful to Luke Evans Bakery for the donation, which will be a big help with our next show Carousel, which we have already started rehearsals for. The show will be performed at Alfreton Grange Arts College in April 2012. For this show we require a group of children to play the 'snow children', therefore we will be involving children and adults of all ages from our local community.”

During National Craft Bakers’ Week, run by the National Association of Master Bakers, Luke Evans Bakery also donated free cream cakes for elevenses to several local companies including Granwood Flooring, Riddings, Martin Harris Hair and Beauty, Leabrooks, ETS Tyres, Riddings, David Nieper, Alfreton for their Macmillan Coffee Morning, and Blooming Nails and Beauty, South Normanton.

Luke Evans Bakery, which was founded in 1804 and now employs the eighth generation of the family, sells direct to the public from its shop in Green Hill Lane, Riddings, and supplies around 300 trade customers across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, including shops, schools, delis and Pride Park – the home of Derby County Football Club.

Fully trained craft bakers operate 24 hours a day turning out breads, cakes and savoury products.

Luke Evans Bakery can also make stunning cakes for every occasion… from weddings and birthdays to special anniversaries and retirements.

Sherwood Truck and Van supplies trucks to tool giant Snap-on

Sherwood Truck and Van, the East Midlands-based commercial vehicle group, has won a contract to supply ten trucks to worldwide tool giant Snap-on.

Referring to their vans as mobile tool stores, Snap-on franchisees market and sell a range of 19,000 interchangeable sockets, spanners and other components to engineering professionals.

As well as being a tool store, each van has a personal computer system so franchisees can run their business from the vehicle, which means vehicles must be able to cope with a heavy payload.

Now the group has ordered ten new EcoDaily 70C17 trucks from Sherwood Truck and Van, based in South Normanton, Derbyshire, and with sites in Nottingham, Stoke and Sheffield.

“Our franchisees spend almost all their working days in their vehicles,” said Robert Stevens, Snap-on’s UK franchise manager.

“They appreciate something that drives like a car, is easy to handle, sits comfortably on the road and looks after them in comfort and safety. Unlike truck-style products, the Daily does all this - and gives us a seven-tonne gross weight that more than accommodates a Snap-on tool store body.

“Our business is nationwide so we needed a dealer who could work with us and our existing suppliers.

“Sherwood pitched to us on the practicality of the EcoDaily, but then supported this with the strongest promise of customer service and ongoing support. And with all ten vehicles now in service, we’re more than happy with the reality of that promise.”

Sherwood Truck and Van regional director Helen Waterfall said: “Snap-on franchisees ask a lot of their vehicles but we were more than happy to supply the EcoDaily with our promise of customer care and after-sales service.

“Snap-on has built partnerships with suppliers all over the world and Sherwood Truck and Van is pleased to have become a part of that.”

Croots Farm Shop sausages and pies win Robin Hood’s seal of approval

Sausages and pies from Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire were on target at the 17th Robin Hood Championship – taking three golds and a silver award during the event run by the Nottinghamshire Council of Retail Meat Traders.

The awards are the latest won by the butchery department at the farm shop in Wirksworth Road, Duffield.

Croots’ Tomato and Basil sausages, the shop’s new Derbyshire Sausages – made from mutton, lemon and herbs – and its Huntsman Pie were top class, according to judges while the Traditional Pork Pie came away with a silver award from the event at the Newark and Nottinghamshire County Show.

Shop owner Steve Croot said: “This is fantastic news for our team. It’s great to get confirmation from industry experts that our products are among the best.

“It confirms what our customers already know, that great ingredients and know-how combine to make all these products stand out, and follows the huge success we had earlier this year at a BPEX regional roadshow when Croots scooped a 16-strong haul of awards for our sausages and pies.”

The Nottinghamshire Council of Retail Meat Traders has been holding the Robin Hood Championship for independent butchers since 1985. It now attracts entries from around the country.

Croots Farm Shop has become renowned for its sausages and other meat products.

In 2009 the shop received a one star gold award in the Great Taste Awards run by the Guild of Fine Food for its black pudding sausage. In November last year the shop won a silver award for its breakfast sausage in a competition held to mark British Sausage Week.

In February, Croots picked up 16 awards at a roadshow run by BPEX, a division of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board which works to promote English pork. Its regional roadshow in February attracted entries from all over the East Midlands.

The Forum is one of the largest business support organisations in the region dedicated to the food and drink sector, with members across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Rutland.

The annual general meeting and members’ networking supper is the flagship event of the organisation’s calendar and attracts many of the region’s key industry players. It takes place on June 16th at Kelham Hall near Newark, starting from 4pm.

Forum managing director Fiona Anderson said: “The AGM is always a very popular and well-attended event. It gives members the chance to chat about issues in the industry and to make valuable contacts.”

Established in 1990, with 17 locations in the East Midlands, and currently supplying over 1500 temporary workers to the food industry on a daily basis, Ambitions Personnel believes that an organisation’s best ingredients should be its people.

Speakers at the event include Sam Sangha, managing director of Nottingham-based importer and wholesaler of oriental foods Asiana Ltd, and his daughter Sandy Lathia, who is the firm’s business development director. They will be speaking about bringing a product to market.

Head of marketing at Pork Farms Ltd, Andy Napthine, will be talking about Pork Farms’ brand relaunch, which comes as the brand marks its 80th anniversary. The firm supplies chilled savoury pastry products for retail.

Derbyshire-based lower fat snack firm Crips launches Crips 99Cals in Morrisons

East Midlands snack company Crips has achieved its first national supermarket roll out after securing a deal to launch its new Crips 99Cals lower fat snacks in 300 Morrisons stores nationwide.

The contract follows the success of Crips 99Cals in 50 Tesco stores in the Midlands and 67 Waitrose stores across the country.

It represents a significant step forward for the business, which is also currently negotiating with a number of other household-name retailers, said managing director Gareth Smith.

The firm, which is based at Ingleby, near Derby, and sprang out of the Leicester-based Orange Tree Group of pubs, is now planning a tasting campaign in 100 Morrisons stores.

“This is good news for the company, and good news for fans of Crips 99Cals who will now have more outlets from which to buy the snacks,” said Gareth.

The award-winning crunchy oven-baked wheat and potato snacks, with 70% less fat than traditional fried potato crisps, have been branded to appeal to consumers looking for healthy products.

The move into Morrisons follows strong and positive feedback from customers to its flavours.

“After they became available in Tesco and Waitrose we were constantly being asked why they weren’t on sale more widely,” said Gareth Smith.

“People were telling us they would buy Crips 99Cals more frequently if they were more easily available so we are delighted that we have secured a listing with Morrisons, which is our first national supermarket roll out.”

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “We are pleased that we can now offer our customers Crips 99Cals snacks. This is part of our ongoing commitment to working with individual companies that can provide innovative brands and help satisfy our customers’ demands.”

The inspiration for Crips snacks came from Gareth’s father Brian Smith, from Ingleby, who has been at the forefront of innovation in the food sector for 40 years. Five years ago he shared his ideas for a healthier, oven-baked crisp with Gareth, who jointly runs the Orange Tree Group, which has pubs in Leicester, Nottingham and Loughborough.

Putting together a team of technical experts, the partnership launched Crips in April 2008. It launched its latest brand, Crips 99Cals, in August last year. Available in three flavours - sea salt and balsamic vinegar, mature cheddar cheese and spring onion, and Thai sweet chilli – the 22.5g packs contain just 99 calories.

As well as coming top in independently conducted blind taste tests, beating five leading-brand healthy option snacks on taste, texture and appearance, Crips have also scooped an innovation award from The Food & Drink Forum and an Enterprise Award from the Home-Grown Cereals Authority.

Crips are also sold in Selfridges, Fortnum and Mason and Harvey Nichols, and a range of independent cafés, bars, delicatessens and farm shops across the UK. They are served as club class snacks by British Airways and the firm also exports to Germany, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Denmark.
