New cappuccino roulade from Central Foods
A stunning new cappuccino roulade has been launched by frozen food distributor Central Foods for foodservice dessert menus.
The delicious hand-rolled, soft, marbled coffee and chocolate meringue roulade, is filled with mild coffee-flavoured real dairy cream and chocolate flakes.
Free from wheat and gluten, and therefore suitable for coeliacs and those on a gluten-free diet, the cappuccino roulade is also suitable for vegetarians – providing a tasty treat that’s perfect for a range of dietary requirements.
It is the latest roulade in the popular Menuserve range of desserts supplied by Central Foods, one of the UK’s leading frozen food suppliers, and joins mouth-watering flavours that include lemon, mango and passionfruit, banoffee, raspberry and white chocolate, raspberry and hazelnut, Black Forest, and salted caramel.
“The Menuserve roulades are among our most popular products for many reasons, including their appealing presentation, delicious taste, home-made look, and the fact that they are suitable for a variety of diners, including vegetarians and those who avoid gluten,” said Gordon Lauder, managing director of Central Foods.
“With growing numbers of consumers following specific diets, for health, religious or lifestyle reasons, it’s important that foodservice operators cater for all and a product such as the Menuserve roulade is ideal. Frozen straight at the peak of quality and consistent every time, it’s sure to be a winner on any menu, whether that’s in a restaurant, hotel, pub, café or other food service outlet.”
The cappuccino roulade, which comes in a twin-pack with each roulade serving ten portions, contains no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. Each slice provides a generous plate coverage, giving excellent value-for-money.
The cappuccino roulade has a defrosted shelf-life of two days, if kept chilled.

Frozen food distributor Central Foods engages new executive chef

New Executive chef Paul Hunt
Leading frozen food distributor Central Foods has expanded its team by engaging an experienced chef, who has worked with some of the largest UK foodservice operators and brands in the business.

Executive chef Paul Hunt will be showcasing products supplied by Central Foods and taking part in demonstrations and sampling sessions to help promote the range available.

He will also assist the development of products and recipes for chefs, using items supplied by the frozen food distributor, which will prove popular in foodservice outlets – helping them to grow their restaurants, bar food and other catering and hospitality operations.

In addition, Paul’s new role will help Central Foods to have a better understanding of the needs of the customers of their wholesaler customers – allowing the expanding firm to source and offer exactly what is needed in terms of foodservice products in the future.

Paul, aka The Skinny Chef, is a fully qualified chef who has undertaken recipe development work for key food manufacturers. He has also been responsible for putting food on the tables of high street restaurants and pub brands, as well as developing products for supermarkets in the UK and Europe.

Gordon Lauder, managing director at Central Foods, said: “Paul is extremely passionate about food and is an expert in his field. Not only does he speak the language of chefs, he also has a great insight into what customers want.

“We’re delighted to have him contracted with Central Foods to help us showcase the very wide range of products that we supply, and to develop recipes and products that chefs can be confident will prove popular with their customers, whether they are serving in pubs or bars, restaurants, business catering operations, sporting venues or leisure outlets.

“In due course, we will be uploading recipe videos to our website which we hope will inspire chefs with their menu ideas and highlight some of the latest trends that they can tap into.”

Paul, who has more than 30 years of experience in food development, preparation and styling, has worked with major supermarkets, restaurant groups, wholesalers and food manufacturers.

Northamptonshire-based, he said: “I am proud and excited that I have been contracted with Central Foods as executive chef. My skill set is varied and includes customer product presentations from food service to wholesalers and manufacturers, menu and recipe development, food and concept development, food styling for photographers and most of all cooking.

“As a leading, long-standing frozen food distributor, Central Foods has an excellent reputation for insight into upcoming trends and for customer service, and I am looking forward to helping the company to build on that by promoting the products they supply and by creating menu ideas that will go down well with their customers and with their customers’ customers too.”

Food service distributor Holdsworth relocates to larger premises

Food service distributor Holdsworth is relocating its Northampton depot to larger premises in Wilstead, Bedford, as part of its on-going expansion plans.

The company, which delivers wholesale food to caterers across the UK, is moving its Northampton operation to a 26,300 sq ft site featuring a warehouse and cold store facility in Kenneth Way, Wilstead Industrial Park, on October 1st.

The move takes the company closer to its customer base and will provide the business with room for additional expansion.

Founded in 1969 by Chairman Michael Holdsworth, the family-owned, privately run company employs more than 270 members of staff across seven depots in Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Northamptonshire, Worcestershire and Powys.

It stocks around 5,000 lines which are supplied wholesale to pubs, restaurants, cafes, hotels, schools and other catering outlets.

Managing Director John Marriott said: “The relocation from Northampton to Bedford has been prompted by expansion, and we are delighted to be moving into a bespoke unit which was built only four years ago and which is perfect for a growing company such as ours.

“This takes us nearer to our customer base, with fast links to the M1 and the A1, and we will be looking to expand our business in the Bedford area.”

Existing staff are being supported in making the move to the new premises. The move has also created some new vacancies which have been filled by people from the local area.

Situated at unit 31 on the gated industrial park, Holdsworth’s new facility includes cold storage, warehouse space, with three dock level loading doors, offices, a yard and car parking.

Holdsworth is currently marketing for sale its premises in St James Mill Road, Northampton, which the company bought in 2000, and which includes 8,625 sq ft of buildings, plus a yard.

In recent years Holdsworth has completed an investment of more than £1 million on a new freezer and dry goods store at its Evesham depot and taken delivery of 40 new multi-temperature vehicles.

A further £1 million was invested in a new 15,000 sq ft unit in Derbyshire to cater for the company’s growing range of chilled, frozen and ambient goods which now includes a comprehensive range of fresh meat, prepared by the company’s team of skilled butchers.

A member of the British Frozen Food Federation, Holdsworth has its head office at Tideswell in Derbyshire.

BSP Consulting celebrates green award scheme

East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting is celebrating the news that a project the firm worked on has won an accolade in the Sustainable Housing Awards 2011.

Brookside Meadows in Northampton was named Sustainable Smaller Housing Project of the Year at the Inside Housing award ceremony.

BSP Consulting, which is based at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and with offices in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, was civil and structural engineer for the development of eight rented family homes – the first council housing scheme built by Northampton Borough Council for decades.

Built to level five of the Code for Sustainable Homes, the three and four-bedroom houses include a range of ‘green’ features, such as photovoltaic panels on the roofs to provide renewable energy, heat recovery systems, triple glazing and rainwater harvesting.

“BSP Consulting is very proud to be associated with a project such as this which has been recognised for its approach to sustainable development,” said BSP Consulting managing director David Sumner.

“We are delighted for the whole team to hear that it has won such a high-profile award.”

The awards, which are organised by Inside Housing and the Chartered Institute of Housing, recognise achievement in sustainable projects across the social housing sector.

Northampton Borough Council worked in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), Frank Haslam Milan (FHM), and Orbit Homes on the scheme, which was part of the HCA's Local Authority New Build programme, which funded local authorities to build their own council homes for the first time in decades, benefiting from £450,000 investment. Architects were Baily Garner.

BSP provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.

The company was launched in Nottingham in 1999 and its offices are in Oxford Street, Nottingham, Pride Park, Derby, De Montfort Street, Leicester and Vincent House, Solly Street, Sheffield.

Students discover the ingredients for a career in the food and drink sector at Food and Drink iNet events

Almost 100 students have so far discovered the recipe for a career in the food and drink industry as part of a programme of events organised by The Food and Drink iNet.

Undergraduates and postgraduates at the universities of Nottingham, Loughborough and Northampton have attended workshops designed to give students an insight into the breadth of career opportunities in the UK’s food and drink industry.

The next session is due to take place at the University of Derby on February 5th between 1pm and 3pm in room T204.

Experts from leading food and drink companies have been involved in the free workshops to give advice about careers in the sector. So far, 94 students have taken part.

“The continued success of the food and drink sector in the East Midlands and beyond depends upon talented individuals joining the industry,” said Peter Maycock, Food and Drink iNet project director. “The food and drink sector is a very varied and dynamic sector in which to work, and we hope that these workshops are encouraging undergraduates and postgraduates to look at taking careers in the food and drink sector when they leave university.”

The Food and Drink iNet aims to foster innovation in the region’s food and drink sector by encouraging businesses to turn new ideas into new business through the development of new technologies and products. It also hopes to stimulate new processes, services and ways of working in the industry to help boost the sector.

Funded by East Midlands Development Agency (emda), the Food and Drink iNet is managed by a consortium, led by The Food and Drink Forum and including Food Processing Faraday, Nottingham Trent University, The University of Lincoln, and The University of Nottingham.
