Yorkshire contract extension for building services firm J Tomlinson

J Tomlinson and SYHA staff with SYHA customer Carmelle
Building services company J Tomlinson Ltd has secured a contract extension with South Yorkshire Housing Association after successfully supporting the organisation with its kitchen and bathroom replacement programme for almost three years.
The additional contract means that J Tomlinson will be undertaking a further £1.8 million worth of upgrades and repair and maintenance work on properties across Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley, and Rotherham in South Yorkshire.
It was won after the firm achieved a 99% customer satisfaction score on work carried out on kitchens and boilers for SYHA over the past year.
Antony Newton, regeneration director at J Tomlinson, said: “J Tomlinson has worked on kitchen and bathroom replacements for South Yorkshire Housing Association properties since September 2014 and we are very pleased to have secured a two-year extension to continue the renovation and improvement programme being undertaken by the organisation.
“Our teams have wide experience in refurbishments of this type, and it is always pleasing to receive a contract extension, as it is an endorsement of the work already completed to date. We are looking forward to continuing our relationship with the housing association and to improving residents’ homes by updating and installing new kitchens and bathrooms, and carrying out other key maintenance and repair work.”
Nottingham-based J Tomlinson operates across South Yorkshire, the East Midlands and the West Midlands, offering a range of integrated building services which include construction, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), facilities management, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance and regeneration.
The latest contract extension for South Yorkshire Housing Association includes boiler installations, and kitchen and bathroom installations, which will be undertaken by the J Tomlinson repairs and maintenance and regeneration teams.
Mike Fisher, senior property services officer at South Yorkshire Housing Association, said: “We are delighted to have offered a contract extension to J Tomlinson following the successful completion of a programme of works over the past three years.
“Their teams have always acted professionally and represented SYHA brilliantly – we’re pleased that we’re able to use their skills and expertise in these areas to carry out improvement work in our customers’ homes. It’s clear from our customer satisfaction surveys that they are very happy with the quality of the work they carry out.”

Macauley Shaw wins Apprentice of the Year 2017
J Tomlinson gas engineer Macauley Shaw has won the title of Apprentice of the Year (16-24) in the Building Communities Awards 2017.
The 20-year-old scooped the accolade at an awards ceremony held at East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham.
Macauley has been with Nottingham-based building services company J Tomlinson since leaving school at the age of 16 and is now a qualified gas engineer.
Martin Ardron, J Tomlinson’s operations director repairs and maintenance and facilities management, said: “We are thrilled that Macauley has been named Apprentice of the Year at the Building Communities Awards and are very proud of him. It’s a richly deserved award.
“As a company, J Tomlinson is very committed to training our workforce, improving our team and individual performances, and giving our employees the opportunity to achieve professional and personal growth. Macauley has been with us since leaving school and has grasped all the opportunities that have been given to him with both hands. He receives many compliments from customers and is a much-valued member of the J Tomlinson team.”
Macauley works in the Repair & Maintenance – Service & Repair division at J Tomlinson and travels across the Midlands and Yorkshire as part of his role. He is a key member of the 24-hour call-out rota, working on plumbing emergencies overnight, and has recently begun attending gas call outs too.
He undertook part of his training at Derby College and since joining J Tomlinson he has completed his NVQ level 2 and NVQ level 3 in Plumbing and Heating, as well as the Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) – the industry recognised and accepted route for operatives to gain a certificate of competence, needed to become a member of the Gas Safe Register. He is now hoping to undertake further qualifications so that he can, in his own words, ‘better myself in the company’.
His line manager, project manager, Jim Upex said: “Macauley is a great engineer and a great team player. We’re delighted that his hard work and dedication has been recognised and rewarded with this title of Apprentice of the Year.”
The Building Communities Awards recognise the professionalism, excellence and innovation sitting at the heart of the East Midlands’ construction and housing community in both the public and the private sectors. The Apprentice of the Year (16-24) Award was sponsored by J Wright Roofing Ltd.

J Tomlinson appoints new head of safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ)

Richard Ball SHEQ manager at J Tomlinson
Construction services company J Tomlinson has appointed Richard Ball as the head of the company’s growing safety, health, environment and quality team.
The move brings all the firm’s health, safety and compliance operations in-house for the first time and is designed to support the company’s expansion.
An ex-serviceman who spent 22 years in the Corps of Royal Engineers, rising to the highest attainable position of Regimental Sergeant Major as a non-commissioned officer, Richard is based at J Tomlinson’s Nottingham head office but will spend time in the West Midlands office in Canwell, as well as at sites across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire.
He said: “J Tomlinson has an excellent reputation and I am pleased to have been appointed to head up and develop the SHEQ operations.
“Health and safety was an integral part of my military life, during which I was required to deliver on time in what were the most arduous of environments and still meet legislative requirements. After witnessing and experiencing loss which was accepted it only seemed natural that becoming a safety professional would be a rewarding career. In the work place we don’t sign up to take risks, as you do in the military, this was the main motivation for moving into this sector after completing my military service in 2013.”
Richard’s department is responsible for standardising quality control of the procedures, policies and compliance across the business, with particular focus on health and safety, environmental, and technical compliance such as gas or electrical installations and maintenance.
Steve Kirkland, J Tomlinson’s managing director responsible for health and safety, said: “J Tomlinson offers integrated building solutions and to support that, we have invested in integrating and developing our management systems so that they are now fully in-house.
“Richard joins us with an impressive background of having worked both within the construction and associated professions while in the military, as well as having expertise within the field of health, safety and compliance during his time in the services and since.
“We’re very pleased to have welcomed him to this new role, at a time when J Tomlinson is continuing to expand sustainably.”
Richard, who trained as a draftsman while in the military, has seen active service in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo and Northern Ireland. He joined J Tomlinson after working for a number of companies in the construction sector since completing his service in 2013.
Based at Beeston, near Nottingham, the company provides a range of integrated building solutions including construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), and facilities management.  It operates across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire.

Grants available to breathe new life into historic buildings, reminds Focus Consultants

Focus Partner Heather Frecklington
Hundreds of neglected historic buildings across the East Midlands could qualify for special grants to help bring them back into life.
That’s the view of funding experts at Focus Consultants, which has successfully secured more than £953 million in various grants and funds for projects over the past 21 years.
Partner Heather Frecklington is reminding community organisations that Heritage Enterprise funding is available to help with some of the costs to repair derelict historic places, which could be the key to giving them productive new uses.
She is urging groups to look around their villages, towns and cities with a fresh pair of eyes and consider whether developments could become commercially viable if they received a cash injection via Heritage Enterprise, which is operated by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
“For many property owners, owning a historic building requires a great deal of investment, firstly potentially restoring those buildings and secondly keeping them in good repair,” said Heather. “The cost of repairing a neglected historic building is often so high that restoration simply isn’t commercially viable. The aim of the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Heritage Enterprise programme is to make such schemes possible by funding some of the repair costs with grants of £100,000 to £5 million available.”
Nottingham-based Focus, which also has branches in London and Leicester, and in Aubourn and Boston in Lincolnshire, has been involved in a number of successful Heritage Enterprise bids and is currently advising several clients on their applications.
“The fund is primarily for enterprising community organisations to help them rescue neglected historic buildings and sites and return them to a viable productive use,” said Heather. “It is designed to bridge the funding gap that prevents an historic asset in need of repair from being returned to a beneficial and commercial use. The case for grant funding will depend on there being a conservation deficit. This is where the existing value of a heritage asset plus the cost of bringing it back into use is greater than the value of the asset after development has been completed.”
Focus specialises in funding and economic development including area regeneration strategies, funding applications, economic impact appraisals, business plans, and research and evaluation. Since 1994 Focus has also secured for clients more than £953 million of grants for projects and businesses across the UK and delivered more than £1.3 billion worth of projects and programmes – making it one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the country.
It also offers a range of services to the property and construction industry, including building surveying, quantity surveying, project management, and sustainable development support.
