Charity cycle ride supported by J Tomlinson

L to R, J Tomlinson's Martin Gallagher, with Paul Talbot & Richard Scott
Building services company J Tomlinson is backing a charity cycle ride taking place over the Easter weekend in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK.

The Nottingham-based company is providing a support van, minibus and driver for the team undertaking the 140-mile coast-to-coast trip from Morecambe in the West to Whitby in the East.

The group of cyclists is being organised by Richard Scott, Building Control and Land Charges Manager at Ashfield District Council and the national president of the Local Authority Building Control (LABC), who is aiming to raise £20,000 for Pancreatic Cancer UK during his year of office as LABC President.

The choice of his charity for the year is in remembrance of his father-in-law John Radford, who for many years ran the family furniture-making business Touchwood, of Mansfield Woodhouse, and who died in 2012 as a result of pancreatic cancer.

Colleagues from Ashfield District Council, Mansfield District Council and the LABC are among those joining him on the ride, which takes place on 15th and 16th April and goes through the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors.

Richard said: “The support van and minibus are vital for our trip – carrying spares and giving us extra security – and we are very grateful to J Tomlinson for providing this back-up.”

J Tomlinson managing director (construction), Martin Gallagher, said: “Richard and I have been good friends since 1985 when we started our careers as apprentice joiners at West Notts College in Mansfield and, as a company, J Tomlinson is very pleased to support Richard and the team of cyclists undertaking the coast-to-coast cycle ride to raise money for such a good cause. We wish them well as they raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK during Richard’s year of office at the LABC.”

Richard was elected as LABC president, representing all local authority building control sections throughout England and Wales, in December 2016.  Acting as the ambassador for LABC in 2016/2017, he will attend regional and national events as well as travelling to Europe to promote local authority building control.

To continue his fundraising during his presidential year he also plans to complete the Great North Run in September.

To donate to the fund-raising effort, visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/LABC-President3

Those taking part in the cycle ride with Richard include Dave Waring, Lee Sycamore, Glen Beaver and Paul Crawford, who all work at Ashfield District Council, Richard Buckwell, who is retired from Ashfield District Council, Marsha Mann, who works at Mansfield District Council, Martin Taylor, from the LABC, and Stephen Carrington, from Pelican Control Systems Ltd. They are being supported by retired Ashfield District Council colleague Paul Talbot, who will be driving, and Sarah Patrick, from Mansfield District Council, as first aider.

J Tomlinson provides a range of integrated building services which include construction, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), facilities management, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance and regeneration. It primarily operates across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire.
The company has strong links with Ashfield District Council, having worked for many years on the council’s refurbishment, repairs and maintenance contracts for its housing stock.

Suitable for vegetarians, Cheggs are designed to appeal to both adults and children.

The Salty Dog brand, alongside the Darling Spuds brand, is created and run by husband and wife team Dave and Judy Willis, well known for their range of snacks, which include crisps, nuts, popcorn, cheddary biscuit bites and Gruntled Pork Crackling.

With a strong pedigree in the sector behind them, the launch of Cheggs is the first major sweet confectionery snack unveiled by the brand, based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire.

“I love candy coated chocolate eggs, and Cheggs seemed a natural extension to our brand,” said Judy. “It’s a lively, fun confectionery product, which builds on the reputation and range that we’ve created over more than 13 years in the snack sector.”

Available from November 2016, the launch of Cheggs is perfectly timed for retailers and food service operators planning their Easter range. They come in shelf ready packaging and clipstrips are offered for the 90g packs.

“We produce and sell a wide selection of cakes, and felt it was time to add the Simnel cake to our range,” said Luke Evans Bakery managing director David Yates.

Tasty food demonstrations at new Loughborough English Food and Drink Festival

Eggs won’t come much bigger this Easter than the giant ostrich egg which will be fried up as part of a range of cookery demonstrations at Loughborough English Food and Drink Festival.

The egg will be the centrepiece of an alternative traditional English breakfast cooked up by Lincolnshire firm Oslinc at the new foodie event, which runs on Easter Monday in Loughborough’s Market Place.

The demonstration will be one of a number given by artisan food and drink producers taking part in the event organised by East Midlands Fine Foods on behalf of Charnwood Borough Council.

Originally planned as a two-day event over the Easter weekend, but now a special one-day event on Easter Monday, April 25th the festival is expected to attract artisan and speciality food and drink producers from across the country.

“As it will be Easter, it’s appropriate to feature eggs in our cooking demonstrations, and they don’t come much bigger than ostrich eggs,” said East Midlands Fine Foods events co-ordinator Jo Taylor.

The event runs from 10am to 4pm on April 25, and is the first of four similar festivals being planned for Loughborough during 2011. Future events are scheduled for June 26th and 27th, August 28th and 29thand October 23rd and 24th.

“We’ve got several cooking demonstrations lined up for the event, so not only will visitors be able to buy some of the country’s best regional food, they will also be getting some great tips on how to cook it when they get home,” said Jo.

“We’re hoping to create a great family atmosphere on Easter Monday.”

In view of the fact that more traders than expected planned to spend Easter Sunday with their families and that virtually all shops in the Loughborough area will be closing on Easter Sunday, market organisers opted to condense the festival into a one-day event.

Mike Bird, Charnwood Borough Council’s markets and fairs manager, said: “Traders are delighted to be Trading on Easter Monday which should make the market an even bigger attraction with a friendly, fun, bustling atmosphere for families and shoppers to enjoy.”

East Midlands Fine Foods, which supports speciality food and drink producers across the region, has run the monthly two-day Regional and Speciality Food and Drink Market in Nottingham, in conjunction with Nottingham City Council, for four years and is delighted to be running similar events now in Loughborough.

Nottingham Language Academy launches intensive exam revision classes in French, German and Spanish for Easter

Nottingham Language Academy is launching intensive revision classes this Easter as anxious pupils compete to secure university places before tuition fees rise to as much as £9,000 a year.

As pressure on higher education places mounts, the language school, based at The Ropewalk, in the city, is offering help at both A level and GCSE in French, German and Spanish during the school break.

Students starting university this September will be the last intake before higher tuition fees are introduced in 2012.

Nationally, more than 600,000 people have already applied through the University and College Admissions Service but the number of places available has been restricted to last year’s level of 487,000.

Demand for university places is being further fuelled by pupils who are cancelling planned gap years to beat the rise in fees.

The Easter holiday revision classes will be held at Nottingham Language Academy on April 18, 19, 20, and 21 and on April 26, 27 and 28.

“We want to give as much help as possible to pupils – and parents – concerned that missing out on a place later this year could cost them thousands of pounds,” said Linda Walker, who is a Business Language Champion in the East Midlands and who launched the Nottingham Language Academy in September last year.

“If pupils have to re-sit A levels they could end up in the first wave of students charged up to £9,000 a year in tuition fees.

“While some youngsters will be shutting themselves away to study at home for the Easter holidays, others may feel happier with a professionally structured approach and a classroom environment to help them revise more effectively. Nottingham Language Academy is here to help.”

The school, which offers tuition to individuals and businesses, also teaches English as a foreign language, alongside the modern languages of French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Greek and Mandarin.

Classes are run during the day, evenings and at weekends, and are designed for people who want to improve their job prospects, travel and see the world, live and work abroad, gain a place at university or learn something new for the fun of it.

The modern foreign languages courses are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which now forms the basis of language teaching and learning in most European Union countries.

Nottingham Language Academy is based at 8 The Ropewalk, Nottingham. For more information visit www.nottinghamlanguageacademy.co.uk or call 0330 333 6192.

New food and drink festival seeks speciality food and drink producers

Speciality food and drink producers across England are being invited to take part in an exciting new food and drink festival launching in April.

The Loughborough English Food and Drink Festival will be held four times a year – starting with a two-day event on Easter Sunday and Monday, April 24th and 25th.

Run by regional food group East Midlands Fine Foods on behalf of Charnwood Borough Council, the event will feature a market packed with tasty goodies from across the country, bringing together the best traditional English produce from each region.

“Shoppers have a big appetite for regional food and drink, and Loughborough English Food and Drink Festival will bring together Britain’s love of traditional markets with the opportunity for people to buy some excellent regional products,” said East Midlands Fine Foods events co-ordinator Jo Taylor.

“Seasonal entertainment will be on offer, including cooking demonstrations, and we’re hoping to create a great family atmosphere on Easter Sunday and Monday. This is an excellent chance for producers from around the country to sell direct to the public in an area that’s renowned for its interest in all things foodie.

“It’s close to Melton Mowbray, the rural capital of food, and in an area of Leicestershire that’s home to many artisan producers.”

Now East Midlands Fine Foods is inviting applications from across the country from suitable producers who want to be part of the event, which will be staged in Loughborough’s Market Place and feature up to 150 stalls.

The organisation is hoping to recruit firms that produce and sell seasonal fruit and vegetables, speciality and rare breed meat including sausages, cakes, jams, pickles and chutneys, charcuterie, sweet and savoury pies and pastry products, dairy products including cheese, butter, yoghurt and ice-cream, confectionery, beers, wines and ciders, drinks including tea, coffee and soft drinks, plus any other artisan products.

The food and drink festivals are also being planned for June 26th and 27th, August 28th and 29th and October 23rd and 24th – with discounts available for stallholders who book for more than one market.

East Midlands Fine Foods, which is managed by regional business support organisation The Food and Drink Forum, supports speciality food and drink producers across the region.

In conjunction with Nottingham City Council, East Midlands Fine Foods has run the monthly two-day Regional and Speciality Food and Drink Market in Nottingham for almost four years.

For more information please contact Jo Taylor on 0115 9758810 or visit www.eastmidlandsfinefoods.co.uk and scroll down to the Loughborough Food and Drink Festival section.
