From haulage to handbags…launch of Nellie-Jane sparks career change for Derbyshire woman

After a career that has taken her from transport and logistics, and via one of the East Midlands’ oldest bakeries, Helen Yates is now on the road with a new enterprise following the launch of handbag retailer Nellie-Jane.
Helen, who was previously MD at Sherwood Truck & Van before becoming a director at Luke Evans Bakery, is fulfilling a dream to own her own business.
And the idea came to her during her summer holiday as she wandered the streets of Venice and chanced upon a shop selling beautifully designed, quality handbags.
“I thought to myself ‘these are such lovely bags, made by individual designers and manufacturers’ and I wanted to be able to share them with women who love handbags as much as I do,” said Helen, who lives in Shirland, near Alfreton.
“Many of the small businesses that produce handbags in Italy are third and fourth generation, and they source their raw materials locally. I wanted to offer handbags of top notch quality that you can’t buy on the British High Street, but are still within the price range of many women, that are distinctive enough in the style and quality, that they become a talking point”.
With the idea sparked in her mind, Helen returned home from her holiday in July 2014 and immediately began putting into place plans to launch an online handbag retailer, Nellie-Jane. She enrolled on a week-long handbag design course at the London College of Fashion run by accessories designer Ann Saunders, who specialises in handbags, and followed it up with a week’s course in Padua in Italy.
Since then she’s sourced handbags from eight designers in Italy, Germany and Spain and has recently opened online retailer Nellie-Jane at www.nellie-jane.co.uk selling shoulder bags, clutch bags, totes, duffle bags and backpacks. She’s currently sourcing additional designers and styles to add to the collection.
It’s a far cry from the logistics and transport career she first went into with TNT and Hays Logistics before then moving to Nottinghamshire-based Sherwood Truck & Van, which had been launched by her father many years previously.
Three years ago she switched routes to join David Yates, now her husband, at Riddings-based bakery Luke Evans.
“My passion was always transport, trucks and lorries, but I enjoy being part of the bakery. However, I have always wanted to run my own business – it just took me a while to hit on the direction to take,” said Helen.
“I’m now dividing my time between Luke Evans Bakery and Nellie-Jane and I love the variety. It’s a massive learning curve, but I’m finding it quite exciting. I love being able to passionately talk about the handbags to the women I’m meeting.”
Helen has been raising awareness about Nellie-Jane via networking, charity and pop-up events, and plans to attend a range of events in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire between now and Christmas.
Her website features the back story behind each designer and brand, giving customers details about where and how the leather bags are put together before she imports them.
“I will only buy up to ten of each one. I look for bags that are really good quality but have a quirkiness that you wouldn’t see elsewhere in the UK,” added Helen.
“What’s important to me is the sourcing. I need to guarantee that there’s no child labour involved and that the animals are treated well. The business is about the quality of the bags but the ethics behind it are also important to me.”
Prices range from £65 to about £350 for a bag, with discounts in operation during the early weeks of the enterprise.
“Running your own business is very different to what I’ve done previously,” said Helen. “I’m used to having a team around me and now I don’t have that. On the other hand, I don’t have to think of anyone else when I’m making a decision. I like working with young people. What I’d like to be able to do is to bring young people into the business as it grows.”

Cupcake decorating organised by Luke Evans Bakery as part of National Craft Bakers’ Week

Derbyshire baker Luke Evans Bakery is taking part in National Craft Bakers’ Week which is raising cash for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The Riddings-based bakery is helping the younger generation to get involved in baking by visiting a local school and encouraging pupils to get creative with cupcakes.

Members of the Luke Evans team will give cupcake decorating demonstrations to pupils at Riddings School on Friday 11th October before letting the youngsters have a go themselves.

The bakery, which supplies bread and cakes across Derbyshire, as well as parts of Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire, is also staging a cupcake decorating workshop at its bakery in Greenhill Lane, Riddings, on Saturday 12th October from 10am to noon, with the opportunity for visitors to have a go themselves.

It is also holding a raffle during National Craft Bakers’ Week, which runs from 7th to 13th October. First prize is a voucher for an 8” celebration cake worth up to £47 and tickets are available from the Luke Evans shop in Greenhill Lane.

Now in its fifth year, the campaign is organised by The National Association of Master Bakers and The Scottish Association of Master Bakers and supported by the baking industry. The event is encouraging everyone to ‘love their baker’ and visit their local craft bakery.

Luke Evans Bakery, which was founded in 1804, regularly gets involved in the campaign and this year has organised a number of events to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

“National Craft Bakers’ Week is an excellent way of not only raising the profile of craft bakers and what they do, but also of helping a charity too,” said Helen Yates, operations director at Luke Evans Bakery.

“We’re looking forward to giving cupcake decorating demonstrations and encouraging others to roll up their sleeves, get their aprons on and have a go.”

Visitors to the workshop on Saturday 12th October are encouraged to put their names on a list in advance at the Luke Evans shop but can turn up on the day, numbers permitting. Entry is £2, plus 50p for a cupcake to decorate. All proceeds will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust, which is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the six young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. The charity builds specialist units within NHS hospitals that bring young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them.

Last year, events held across the UK as part of National Craft Bakers’ Week raised more than £2,000.

Luke Evans Bakery joins Feeding Britain’s Future campaign

Derbyshire bakery Luke Evans is taking part in a national scheme aimed at helping young people to secure jobs.

The Riddings-based bakery has pledged support to the Feeding Britain’s Future campaign which is being staged by the food and grocery industry during September.

Organised by research and training charity IGD (Institute of Grocery Distribution) and in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, the campaign is offering 15,000 training opportunities nationally.

At Luke Evans Bakery, operations director Helen Yates will run workshops over two days on September 18th and 20th focusing on compiling CVs and advice on interviews, as well as a tour of the bakery.

“We feel it’s really important to support young people in their bid to secure a job. It can be particularly tough to get on the first rung of the career ladder. Luke Evans Bakery has been hiring local Derbyshire workers for more than 200 years, so we are well placed to offer advice and support about what we look for when it comes to employability,” said Helen Yates.

“At the same time, this campaign gives us, and the sector in general, a great opportunity to inspire the younger generation to consider the food and grocery industry as a career. The food and grocery industry is the UK’s biggest private sector employer, accounting for one in seven jobs, and it needs to attract young people with the right skills in order to continue to thrive.”

Pre-employment workshops are taking place at 1,200 locations across England, Scotland and Wales during September, and more than 180 employers have united to offer 15,000 training opportunities to young people.

IGD chief executive Joanne Denney-Finch said: “This type of programme not only helps young people understand the rules of the game when job hunting, but it also widens the talent pool from which the industry can recruit its future stars and leaders. There are benefits for everyone and we’d encourage other industries to follow suit.”

Luke Evans Bakery, which was founded in 1804, operates 24 hours a day producing a range of breads, cakes and other bakery items.

It supplies around 300 wholesale and trade customers in Derbyshire, East Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire, including shops, universities, cafés, schools and delis. It also has a shop beside its bakery in Greenhill Lane, Riddings, near Alfreton.

Christmas coffee morning in aid of Breast Cancer Research

Two Derbyshire women who are running the London Marathon next year in aid of Breast Cancer Research are staging a fund-raising Christmas coffee morning.

Helen Yates, operations director at Luke Evans Bakery in Riddings, near Alfreton, and midwife Deana Emerson are aiming to raise £5,000 before the 26-mile event on April 21st.

They plan to stage a number of fund-raising events to help them reach their target, with the first on Saturday 15th December from 10am to 2pm at South Wingfield Cricket Club near Alfreton.

The Christmas coffee morning will feature entertainment, refreshments and a special guest appearance from Father Christmas who will be in his grotto waiting to meet the children and give each of them a present.

Next year’s marathon will be the first undertaken by Helen, who’s 39, and the fourth by Deana, who is 41.

Both women, who live in Shirland, have had treatment for breast cancer and are setting out to collect as much as they can for Breast Cancer Research.

“We’re getting on well with our training and looking forward to the London Marathon next year,” said Helen. “Although I’ve run for a while, I’ve never attempted long distance before so it’s going to be quite a challenge to keep up with Deana.”

A mix of home made cakes from local friends, family and well wishers, and treats from Luke Evans Bakery along with coffee, tea and mulled will be available at the Christmas coffee morning.
