55th birthday celebrations rounded off at Bunny Hill Riding Centre

A riding school on the Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire border is rounding off its 55th birthday celebrations with a social event in October.

Folk band Growling at the Badger will be playing at Bunny Hill Riding Centre near Costock on October 16th.

The equestrian centre has been staging a series of events over the past few months to celebrate its 55th birthday, including a reunion in June, which attracted more than 300 former pupils and staff.

Now the stables is holding a final birthday bash with an evening of music, which runs from 7pm to midnight on Saturday October 16th, and costs £5 a ticket, to include nibbles.

Founded by Freda and the late Bob Humphrey in 1955, Bunny Hill Riding Centre is now run by their son Sam and his wife Lou Humphrey, who offer riding lessons to people of all ages and at all stages.

The riding centre became known as the National School of Equitation in the 1960s after becoming one of the first riding stables in the UK to have an indoor riding school, until recently reverting back to its original name.

“We have really enjoyed the programme of events we’ve run to mark our special anniversary year,” said Sam Humphrey. “It’s been fantastic to see so many old friends. We hope the event on October 16th will be the chance for us to get together again, and for any of those who missed our previous events to come along and help us share our celebrations.”

Bunny Hill Riding Centre is also home to the Knights of Nottingham jousting team, which is this year celebrating its 40th birthday.

Growling at the Badger was formed by some members of the jousting troupe when they attended the World Jousting Championships in Colorado several years ago and every team was asked to perform an act of some sort.

Sam’s brother Phil Humphrey and fellow jouster Pete Webster got together with a couple of the footmen and formed the band. They have remained in the band, and are now joined on stage by other footmen and a local vet to play in the area most weekends.

During the past few months, events at the riding stables have helped to raise around £500 for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Trust, and a raffle at October’s social event will be held for the same cause.

Tickets are available from Bunny Hill Riding Centre. For further information email lou@bunnyhill.co.uk , call 01509 852366 or visit the riding centre’s website http://www.bunnyhill.co.uk/ or Facebook page.

Free taster sessions to mark Bunny Hill Riding Centre’s 55th birthday

Beginner, novice and experienced horse riders are being invited to take part in free taster sessions on offer from a riding stable that’s celebrating its 55th anniversary.

The birthday ‘presents’ are being given by Bunny Hill Riding Centre on the Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire border near Costock to mark the family-run firm’s milestone.

The 10-15 minute free sessions on Saturday July 31st are open to would-be riders keen to get into the saddle, lapsed riders who’ve not been on a horse for years, as well as regular riders who might need help with a specific challenge. Riders with their own horses are also being encouraged to pop along for assessments and advice.

The consultations are being held as part of an open day and are the chance for riders to receive expert tips from the stable’s owners, Sam and Lou Humphrey, as well as the opportunity for non-riders who fancy finding out what it’s like to learn to ride.

Bunny Hill Riding Centre is staging a series of events during 2010 to celebrate its 55th anniversary. The equestrian centre was launched in 1955 by Sam Humphrey’s parents, Freda and the late Bob Humphrey, and has taught thousands of people to ride.

“We’re running the open day and free taster sessions to give people the chance to find out more about learning to ride, and to offer lapsed riders the chance to get back in the saddle,” said Sam Humphrey.

“It’s also an opportunity for regular riders to come along and ask us questions about specific problems or challenges they want to over come. Riders at all stages are continually learning.”

The sessions will run from 11am to 4pm, and are open to riders who want to bring their own horses, or those who’d like to try Bunny Hill Riding Centre’s horses. Children from four years old are eligible.

Visitors will have the chance to look around the facilities on offer at Bunny Hill Riding Centre, including the indoor school and the floodlit outdoor ménage.

To take part in a free ten-15 minute taster session, register by email or phone on lou@bunnyhill.co.uk or 01509 852366, stating name, address, telephone number and email address, and a slot will then be allocated. Terms and conditions apply. Visit www.bunnyhill.co.uk for more information.

Successful 55th birthday reunion for Bunny Hill Riding Centre

Around 300 former pupils, staff and associates of Bunny Hill Riding Centre came from near and far to celebrate the equestrian centre’s 55th birthday.

They travelled from all over the East Midlands and UK to attend the event at the riding stables on the Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire border.

Travelling furthest was Clive Broadbent, who came more than 1,500 miles from Pennsylvania, USA, to join in the celebrations.

Clive was one of the original performers with The Knights of Nottingham jousting troupe based at Bunny Hill Riding Centre, which is also marking a special anniversary this year by celebrating its 40th birthday.

Another guest was Bill Hammond, from the Vale of Belvoir, who appeared in several films and TV shows riding on behalf of Bunny Hill Riding Centre. He was Michael Elphick’s double for stunts during the filming of Boon and took part in the film Lady Jane Grey.

“We were absolutely overwhelmed to see so many people at our 55th birthday reunion,” said Sam Humphrey, who runs the riding stables with wife Lou. “It was great to catch up with old friends who we’d not seen for years, and we’d like to thank everyone for helping us to share the special occasion.”

A raffle at the event raised £495 for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Trust.

The reunion included a lively display by The Knights of Nottingham jousting troupe and music by folk band Growling at the Badger, who are also members of The Knights of Nottingham.

Bunny Hill Riding Centre was launched by Sam’s parents Freda and the late Bob Humphrey in 1955. It has taught thousands of people to ride since opening.

Among those who have taken to the saddle at Bunny Hill Riding Centre are mayors and sheriffs of Nottingham who needed to be able to ride a horse for official parades, Nottinghamshire-born actress Sherrie Hewson, who played Maureen in Coronation Street and currently appears on ITV’s Loose Women, several Nottingham Forest football players, and singer Micky Dolenz, who is best known for his role in the band The Monkees.

The centre’s horses have been used in many films, such as Gladiator, Lady Jane Grey, and First Night, which starred Richard Gere. They’ve also featured in TV programmes as diverse as Boon and Rosie & Jim, and have appeared in several adverts for the likes of Carling Black Label and Mars.

“We have taught thousands of people to ride here since 1955, from very young children to older adults, and it’s wonderful that we are still doing so as a family operation 55 years later,” added Sam. “I would like to pay tribute to my parents for buying this fantastic spot all those years ago.”

Freda and many other members of the Humphrey family were at the reunion to celebrate the milestone.

Former riding school pupils coming from near and far for 55th birthday reunion of Bunny Hill Riding Centre

Past pupils of a riding school celebrating its 55th birthday are expected to come from as far away as America and Portugal to take part in a reunion in June.

Bunny Hill Riding Centre, on the Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire border at Bunny Hill Top, near Costock, is staging a series of events to mark its 55th birthday this year.

The highlight is a reunion on June 20th which will provide the chance for some of the thousands of people who have learnt to ride at the stables to get together again.

“At the start of the year we announced we wanted to stage a reunion in June to celebrate the 55th birthday of Bunny Hill Riding Centre,” said Sam Humphrey, whose parents Freda and the late Bob Humphrey launched the equestrian centre in 1955. “We began putting the word out, and we’ve been amazed at how many people have got in touch to say they’d like to come.

“We’re expecting guests from as far away as America and Portugal. Most of them are former pupils who learnt to ride here, but we’ve also heard from past teachers who worked here too. It will be great to see some old friends again, as well as some of our current clients, at the reunion.”

The get together will also feature short demonstrations from The Knights of Nottingham Jousting Troop, which is based at Bunny Hill Riding Centre, and which is also celebrating a special anniversary this year - its 40th birthday.

Bunny Hill Riding Centre, which is run by Sam and his wife Lou, offers riding lessons to people of all ages and at all stages. Thousands of people are estimated to have learnt to ride there over the 55 years since the centre opened.

“We have taught thousands of people to ride here, and we are really looking forward to our reunion in June,” added Sam.

The reunion runs from noon to 3pm, and will include music. Refreshments will be available.

Any former pupils who’d like to attend the reunion in June should get in touch by emailing lou@bunnyhill.co.uk or calling 01509 852366 so that they can be added to the mailing list for information.

More information can be found on the riding centre’s website www.bunnyhill.co.uk or on the riding centre’s Facebook page.

Jousting tournament marks a double birthday celebration at Bunny Hill Riding Centre

A jousting tournament is being staged as part of an equestrian centre’s 55th birthday celebrations.

The event at Bunny Hill Riding Centre will also celebrate the 40th birthday of The Knights of Nottingham Jousting Troop – an internationally-known jousting team that’s based at the riding stables on the Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire border near Costock.

It will be held during the evening of Saturday March 27th and will feature daring demonstrations and expert horsemanship, based on a Robin Hood theme. The event is also raising money for Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Trust.

“We are holding several different events at Bunny Hill Riding Centre to celebrate our 55th birthday, and I’m sure the jousting tournament will go down very well, both with those who have seen the troop before and with those who have never watched jousting previously,” said Sam Humphrey, who runs Bunny Hill Riding Centre with wife Lou. “It’s really entertaining.”

The riding stables, which offers lessons for all ages and at all stages, was founded by Sam’s parents, Freda and the late Bob Humphrey, in 1955. Thousands of people have learnt to ride there since.

A programme of events has been lined up to mark the 55th birthday of Bunny Hill Riding Centre, including a reunion for former pupils, which will be held in June.

More information can be found on the riding centre’s website www.bunnyhill.co.uk or its Facebook page.

The jousting troop was set up by accident in 1970 when Bob Humphrey was asked if he could supply some horses for a medieval-themed festival in Nottingham. At the time there was no professional jousting team in Britain, so stuntmen devised a routine for a jousting tournament which was to be a key feature of the festival. A booking error meant that the stuntmen weren’t available for the seventh day, so Bob was asked to round up a group of male riders to dress up and carry on the tournament for the final day. It was a great success!

The jousting tournament caught the imagination of festival organisers up and down the country and Bob was asked to organise further jousting tournaments. Nottingham Jousting Association was formed and within two years, what started as a hobby became a full-time, commercial enterprise, with Bob’s three sons, Sam, Philip and Stuart all taking part.

The next generation of Humphrey boys has now joined the troop, which travels the length and breadth of Great Britain and has also performed on many occasions overseas, including Sam and Lou’s son Mark, who is a farrier.

In 2006 Sam hung up his jousting spurs and Philip, Stuart and Mark along with several other members of the troop set up the company Medieval Entertainment and renamed the jousting troop The Knights of Nottingham.

Tickets for the jousting tournament on March 27th cost £10 for adults with accompanied under 16s free, and are available from Bunny Hill Riding Centre. Telephone 01509 852366.

Bunny HIll Riding Centre celebrates its 55th birthday

A family-run equestrian centre is celebrating its 55th anniversary during 2010 with an exciting programme of events.

Bunny Hill Riding Centre is also launching a search for some of the many thousands of people who have learnt to ride at the stables since it opened in 1955 so that they can be invited to a reunion in June.

The riding centre, which is on the Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire border near Costock, was founded by the late Bob Humphrey and his wife Freda. It’s now run by their son Sam and his wife Lou, who offer riding lessons to people of all ages and at all stages.

“We’re proud to be celebrating our 55th birthday and have organised several different events over the year which we hope will appeal to horse riders,” said Sam. “We’re hoping to hear from lots of our ex-pupils who perhaps learnt to ride here many years ago, and are looking forward to seeing some familiar faces at our reunion in June and at the other events we’ve got planned.”

Among those who have learnt to ride at Bunny Hill Riding Centre have been mayors and sheriffs of Nottingham who needed to be able to ride a horse for official parades, Nottinghamshire-born actress Sherrie Hewson, who played Maureen in Coronation Street and currently appears on ITV’s Loose Women, and several Nottingham Forest football players.

The centre’s horses have been used in many films, such as Gladiator, Lady Jane Grey, and First Night, which starred Richard Gere. They’ve also featured in TV programmes as diverse as Boon and Rosie & Jim, and have appeared in several adverts for Carling Black Label and Mars, amongst others.

The riding school has also taught many people who have gone on to professional careers in the horse world, including Sam’s daughter Emma Humphrey who is a professional international eventer.

The riding centre became known as the National School of Equitation in the 1960s after becoming one of the first riding stables in the UK to have an indoor riding school, until recently reverting back to its original name.

The Humphrey family is well-known in many equestrian disciplines. Bob Humphrey was a successful jockey. Sam Humphrey was a successful jockey and team chaser, winning the novice championship with his team. He hunts regularly in England and Ireland with wife Lou Humphrey, who has trained a successful racehorse and is currently a British Dressage judge and an NVQ assessor. Their daughter Emma Humphrey is an advanced event rider. Son Mark is a farrier with a special interest in remedial farriery, and partly owns the Knights of Nottingham jousters, which is based at Bunny Hill Riding Centre.

The celebratory programme of events launches with a social event on Saturday February 13th when skiffle band Kick n Rush will play in the bar at Bunny Hill Riding Centre. Tickets are £5.

A jousting tournament in the indoor school is planned for March 27th, with tickets priced £10 for adults and free for children.

Other events will include demonstrations and the reunion in June.

The riding centre will be raising money for the International League for the Protection of Horses during its 55th birthday celebrations.

Bunny Hill Riding Centre is appealing for any former pupils who’d like to attend the reunion and garden party in June, or any other events, to get in touch by emailing lou@bunnyhill.co.uk or calling 01509 852366 so that they can be added to the mailing list for information.

More information can be found on the riding centre’s website www.bunnyhill.co.uk or on the riding centre’s Facebook page.
