Derbyshire farm shop Croots is marking Breakfast Week with a series of special offers and promotions.

The farm shop, at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, Duffield, regularly supports the annual national event, which aims to raise awareness of the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast and demonstrate the wealth of wonderful breakfast produce available around the country.

This year Breakfast Week runs from 24^th to 30^th January and the award-winning Croots Farm Shop has lined up a string of deals and offers to mark the occasion.

“We’re big supporters of breakfast here at Croots – in the shop and in our Shires Eatery, where our breakfasts are very popular, especially at weekends,” said Steve Croot, who runs the farm shop.

“Breakfast Week is a regular event on our calendar and provides the opportunity for us to encourage our customers to try new breakfast items or to get some of their usual breakfast ingredients in a special deal.”

From Monday 25^th January until Sunday 31^st January, Croots is offering a buy one, get one free on a Croots Breakfast at Croots Shires Eatery, with breakfast available until 2.30pm Monday to Saturday and until noon on Sundays. The offer is only available with a voucher, available from Croots Facebook page or website. Offer does not include drinks. 

During the week, Croots is also offering two 500g packs of its award-winning Croots Muesli for £5, two 1L litre cartons of fruit juice for £2, two 500g Croots Porridge packs for £2, two packs of four Derbyshire Oatcakes for £2.75 and three packs of bacon and sausage for £10. Offers available from Monday 25^th January to Sunday 31^st January 2016.

Croots Farm Shop is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (Shires Eatery until 4.30pm) and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Croots runs Fresh Fish Thursdays between 9am and 1pm on Thursdays.

New appointment at contractor J Tomlinson

Expanding contractor J Tomlinson has appointed Antony Newton as special projects leader.

An experienced commercial manager and quantity surveyor, Antony has been appointed to support J Tomlinson’s commercial activity initially in two departments - Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Facilities Management.

His position is a newly created post and he joins the Nottingham-based company as it experiences unprecedented growth.

“J Tomlinson is a company with an excellent reputation, working across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire, and I am very pleased to be a part of an ambitious team that is taking the business forward,” said Antony.

New venue, new format for Shire Horse Society National Show 2016

The world’s largest gathering of Shire horses returns for 2016 with a new venue and a new format.

The Shire Horse Society’s National Show 2016 will be run over three days, instead of two, and will be staged at Staffordshire County Showground from 18^th to 20^th March.

Expected to attract around 200 horses from across Europe and visitors from around the globe, the show has moved its ridden classes to the Friday afternoon due to the growing popularity of this section of the event.

The Friday classes will feature dressage and concours d’elegance to highlight the grace and elegance of the gentle giants of the horse world. These will be the opening classes of the show, which is the flagship event of the year for the Shire Horse Society - the only charity dedicated to the protection, promotion and improvement of the Shire horse.

The show is also moving to a new home this year – Bingley Hall in the centre of Staffordshire County Showground - to cater for increasing visitor numbers to the show, who are keen to support the iconic breed which a few decades ago was in danger of dying out.

Shire Horse Society secretary David Ralley-Davies said: “Our National Show has been steadily gaining in popularity again recently and we wanted to ensure that everyone who wants to go gets the chance to attend, hence the decision to move to a bigger and more central venue for 2016.

“Bingley Hall will also provide additional facilities for exhibitors and their horses, such as indoor stabling for the majority of horses being shown. We are looking forward to welcoming many new visitors, as well as our loyal followers and our members, to the showground.”

The Shire Horse Society, which is based at Rockingham Castle on the Leicestershire/Northamptonshire border, has signed a five-year deal to stage its National Show at Bingley Hall – starting in 2016.

The show, which has been held at a limited number of venues in England over its long history, is believed to be one of the oldest, almost continuous, horse shows in the world, having been held for the first time at the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington, London, in 1880, when the charity was named the English Cart Horse Society.

The first qualifier of 2016 for the Horse of the Year Show, the event features three days of competition and classes, with horses shown in-hand, ridden and in harness. It will also include stalls and exhibitor stands for the public to browse.

The event takes place from noon to 6pm on Friday 18^th March, from 8am to 6pm on Saturday 19^th March and from 8am to 4pm on Sunday 20^th March 2016.

Tickets cost £4 in advance and £5 on the gate for Friday 18^th March. Tickets in advance are £8 for adults and £6 for under 12s and seniors, and £12 for adults and £10 for under 12s and seniors on the gate, on Saturday 19^th and Sunday 20^th March.

Entry is free for Shire Horse Society members.

Croots Farm Shop brings festive cheer to Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre

Customers and staff at Derbyshire farm shop Croots have brought some festive cheer to the farm shop’s adopted charity.

A series of fundraising efforts including a Christmas hamper draw, the sales of magic reindeer food and a competition to find the best dressed Christmas tree resulted in £323 being collected for Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre over the festive period.

The charity, which has been the farm shop’s adopted charity for a number of years, provides disadvantaged Derbyshire children with holidays in Skegness. In 2016, it celebrates its 125^th birthday.

Steve Croot, who runs Croots Farm Shop based at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, near Duffield, with wife Kay, said: “We’re delighted to have raised a lovely sum for Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre so that we can present the charity with a great Christmas gift.

“I’d like to thank our customers and staff for once again taking part in our fundraising efforts which allow us to raise money for such a good cause.”

Croots Farm Shop creates hanging Christmas tree forest in Derbyshire

Derbyshire farm shop Croots has come up with a novel way to display its Christmas trees – a hanging forest in one of the farm’s barns.

The set-up means that customers can walk amongst the firs, as they hang from the ceiling of the barn, and see exactly how the tree will look when it finds its place in the home.

“Everyone has their own idea of what makes the perfect tree for their home,” said Steve Croot, who runs the farm shop off Wirksworth Road, Duffield, with wife Kay. 

“For some it’s all about the height, while for others it’s more about the shape. The branches on the firs that are being suspended in a barn at Croots have had time to naturally spread out to show exactly what the trees will look like when they stand in that special place in the home.

“Aside from that, everyone seems to be enjoying walking through our hanging forest.”

The award-winning farm shop is also raising money for its adopted charity, Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre, by running a social media competition on Twitter and Facebook to find the best decorated Croots Christmas tree.

For a charity donation of 50p, customers are being invited to post photos of their dressed tree, with the hashtag #CrootsChristmasTree, to be in with a chance to win £50 worth of Croots vouchers.

Croots, which is based at Farnah House Farm, is selling non-drop Nordmann fir trees ranging in size from 4ft to 6.5ft, with prices from £30. The glossy green Nordmann fir has big needles which are relatively soft, making it suitable for those with young children.

J Tomlinson’s head of business development wins Female Executive of the Year Award

The head of business development at contractor J Tomlinson, Nikki Foreman, has been named as Female Executive of the Year at the Nottingham Post Women in Business Awards 2015.

Nikki, who joined the construction company three years ago, took the title after becoming a crucial member of the team delivering business growth for J Tomlinson over the last 12 months and for the future, which has resulted in the greatest level of turnover and profit (last financial year) that the business has ever had.

The awards, which celebrate the outstanding achievements of female entrepreneurs and professionals, fly the flag for women in business and create female role models to inspire future generations of women.

“I am so excited to have won the title of Female Executive of the Year at the Nottingham Post Women in Business Awards,” said Nikki. “The standard of nominations and entries in all categories was amazingly high and I’d like to congratulate all the shortlisted contenders.
