BSP Consulting MD undertakes new challenge for MS research

Dave Sumner in the Lake District ahead of his walk for the MS Society
Managing director of East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering firm BSP Consulting, David Sumner, is preparing to lace up his boots for his latest fundraising challenge in aid of MS research.
Over the years, David and his supporters have raised thousands of pounds for the MS Society – a cause close to his heart, as his wife Pat has been living with the condition for more than 20 years.
In 2014, David raised more than £6,000 for MS Society research after climbing Mt Kilimanjaro.
In 2016, he took part in the 10in10 – an annual walk which conquers ten peaks in ten hours in the Lake District and which raises money for the charity to spend on research into the debilitating neurological condition.
After collecting almost £1,850 last year, he has decided to undertake the challenge for a second time and on 24th June will be embarking on the walk once more with the aim of raising a further £2,000. But this time he hopes to ‘fell run’ most of the 16-mile distance.
“One of the main goals in MS research currently is to encourage repair of the damage to the myelin surrounding the nerve cell, hopefully restoring function to the nerve and protecting it from damage,” said David. “There are no treatments yet but research is making great strides all the time and is looking promising. The hope that one day there may be a treatment for this disease is what really spurs me on to continue fundraising.”
A total of £250,000 has been raised for research by the 10in10 challenge since it began in 2011 – created by Yvonne Booth in response to her husband Duncan’s diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in 2010, at the age of 39.
David, the MD of Nottingham-headquartered BSP Consulting, will be joining others for the 16-mile event, which starts at Newlands Valley near Keswick and takes in Causey Pike, Sail, Crag Hill, Wandope, Whiteless Pike, High Snockrigg, Robinson, Dale Head, High Spy, and Maiden Moor.
He has set up a fundraising page for donations here https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/David-Sumner2
“I am so grateful to all the colleagues, associates and clients in the construction sector in the East Midlands and beyond who have supported me most generously in the past, along with friends and family,” said David. “I really hope they can continue that superb support and help find a treatment for this devastating condition.”
BSP Consulting, which has its head office in Oxford Street, Nottingham, and branches in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, provides a comprehensive range of consultancy services in civil, structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering to all sectors of the construction community, from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents. It was founded in 1999 and operates across the UK.

BSP Consulting MD tackles walking challenge for MS research

The managing director of East Midlands civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting is tackling a walking challenge to raise money for charity.
David Sumner will take part in the 10in10 – an annual walk which conquers ten peaks in ten hours in the Lake District and which raises money for the MS Society.
In December 2014, he raised more than £6,000 for the charity after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
Now he is embarking on a second challenge in support of the organisation, which undertakes research into Multiple Sclerosis – a condition that David’s wife Pat has been living with for more than 20 years.
“Multiple Sclerosis is a debilitating neurological disease with no cure, and I want to do what I can to raise money to help researchers discover new ways of treatment in the hope that one day a cure might be found,” said David.
The annual 10in10 challenge was designed and created by Yvonne Booth in 2011. It was her response to her husband Duncan’s diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in 2010.
Supporters of the event raise money specifically for research into stem cell treatment in MS and how stem cells could be used to repair myelin – the protective layer that surrounds nerve fibres which is damaged by MS.
The 10in10 takes place on Saturday 25th June 2016 and will cover a distance of more than 16 miles, starting and finishing near Keswick. The route takes in Causey Pike, Sail, Crag Hill, Wandope, Whiteless Pike, High Snockrigg, Robinson, Dale Head, High Spy, and Maiden Moor.
David is a founding director of BSP Consulting, which has offices in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield, and which provides civil, structural, traffic, transportation, geotechnical and environmental engineering services across the construction industry.
A graduate of the University of Nottingham, he is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Thousands raised for charity after Mount Kilimanjaro climb for BSP Consulting MD

Managing director of an East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering company, David Sumner, has raised around £6,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society after climbing the world’s highest free-standing mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, for charity.
David was also part of a four-man team that raised more than £3,500 for Plumtree Cricket Club. Their efforts have kick started an appeal to develop a second ground at the Nottinghamshire club so the club can provide the best facilities for disabled cricketers and encourage more young players, and those who are less able, to take part in the game.
“It was the most amazing experience, and I am delighted and proud to have raised so much money for two causes that are very close to my heart,” said David. “I’m very grateful to those who sponsored me and donated to either or both fundraising efforts. A big thank you to everyone, including many firms in the construction, development and property sector in the East Midlands who supported my challenge.”
David, who jointly founded Nottingham-based BSP Consulting in 1999, was part of a
30-strong group of people who tackled Mount Kilimanjaro, which is 19,341 feet above sea level.
He undertook the challenge to raise money for MS research as his wife Pat has lived with the debilitating condition for around 20 years. As a member of Plumtree Cricket Club, he also wanted to support the appeal to expand club facilities and climbed the peak with three fellow cricket club members - Steve Daft, Patrick Shortt and Tony Westbrook.
“Physically it was a tough challenge but when we reached the top it was literally breathtaking. Not only are you gasping for breath due to the altitude, the view above the clouds is quite astonishing. It was stunning and well worth the climb,” added David.
BSP Consulting has its headquarters at Oxford Street, Nottingham, and branches in Derby, Leicester and Sheffield. It operates across the UK, providing a comprehensive range of services to all sectors of the construction industry from architects, project managers and contractors to developers and estate agents.
