Focus Consultants appointed project manager on Tatton Park scheme

Tatton Park farm entrance
Heritage experts at Focus Consultants have been appointed to help drive forward a project to showcase the history of farming and its relevance to healthy eating today at one of the UK’s most well-known country estates.
Tatton Dale Farm in Tatton Park, Knutsford, Cheshire, has received £1 million Heritage Lottery funding to develop a scheme to tell the story of food production for a large country estate from the late 18th century to the 1950s.
The project aims to bring alive the agricultural, architectural, technological, social and cultural heritage of Tatton Dale Farm through the ‘field to fork’ story - told through the mouths of former workers, its buildings, machinery, livestock and traditional agricultural skills.
It includes a new visitor hub at the farm’s agricultural mill building, as well as a number of site-wide hands-on experiences.
Focus Consultants, which has worked on a wide range of heritage and museum-related schemes across the UK, has been appointed to project manage the overall development alongside Cheshire East Council, which manages and finances Tatton Park on behalf of the National Trust.
Focus partner Steven Fletcher said: “Tatton Park is one of the UK’s most complete historic estates, and the team at Focus Consultants is very pleased to have been appointed to help develop the ‘field to fork’ story of the estate’s farm so that its story can be shared with future generations.
“We have extensive expertise in developing heritage attractions and are proud to be a part of the team providing a fascinating and enjoyable exploration of this uniquely well-preserved window into farming and food production at Tatton Park over two centuries.”
Focus, which is based in Nottingham and also has branches in London, Leicester, Boston and Aubourn in Lincolnshire, has been involved in numerous heritage schemes, including at many London museums, as well as at the National Museum Wales, MShed in Bristol, SeaCity in Southampton, and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
Carole Mullineux, Tatton Park business development manager, said: “We’re delighted that Focus Consultants is part of our team. The ‘field to fork’ project is an exciting new initiative for us which will give us the opportunity to attract new visitors, protect Tatton’s heritage assets and ultimately realise the farm’s potential.”
Meanwhile, Cllr George Walton, chairman of the Tatton Park board, said: “This is an extremely important educational addition to the park and we look forward to working with Focus Consultants who will drive this forward.
“They have considerable experience in heritage projects of this nature and the ‘field to fork’ story will complement the many other attractions that combine to make Tatton Park one of the best visitor attractions in Britain.”
As well as providing skills in heritage development, Focus also specialises in funding and economic development including area regeneration strategies, funding applications, economic impact appraisals, business plans, and research and evaluation. Since 1994 Focus has also secured for clients more than £953 million of grants for projects and businesses across the UK and delivered more than £1.3 billion worth of projects and programmes – making it one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the country.
It also offers a range of services to the property and construction industry, including building surveying, quantity surveying, project management, and sustainable development support.

Sweet treat from Haughton Honey for customers looking for a bigger honey fix

Haughton Honey's new 900g pot of honey
Premium honey brand Haughton Honey has launched a new 900g pot of delicious raw honey.

It is believed to be the first brand of raw British honey to be widely available in such a size of container, which is very popular within mainland Europe, and holds the equivalent of two and a half jars of their well-known 340g honey product.

The new tub has been launched in response to popular demand, and is aimed at consumers who would otherwise normally purchase two or three jars for their own use.

“Our honey monsters can’t seem to get enough of Haughton Honey, so we’re making it easier for them to buy the raw honey in larger quantities,” said Haughton Honey founder Crispin Reeves. “Initial interest from customers in our new, larger pots at recent food and drink festivals has been exceptional.”

The company, based at Radmore Farm, Haughton, near Tarporley, in Cheshire, bottles raw honey which comes straight from the hive, is cold extracted and never pasteurised which means that it retains all of the natural enzymes and proteins that make English honey so special. It is also 100% natural and pure and features traces of dandelion, chestnut, blackberry, clover and other wildflowers.
Launched in 2014, Haughton Honey is expected to pack and sell more than 16,000 kg of raw honey during 2016, as demand for the honey grows.
Currently available online at www.haughtonhoney.com or at food festivals attended by Haughton Honey, the large tub is expected to be rolled out to many of the almost 100 independent stores, delis, farm shops and garden centres across the North West and Midlands regions, as well as Booths stores, which stock the brand.
The all-natural product is brilliant for baking, stirring into hot drinks or porridge, or as a topping on toast, crumpets and muffins. Hay fever sufferers swear by a spoonful of honey a day to ward of some of the more unpleasant symptoms of the condition.
Earlier this year, the company staged a successful crowdfunding appeal to help support its expansion plans, raising more than £112,000 in investments.
A 340g jar of Haughton Honey costs £5.95, with a 900g tub priced at £12.95 online.

Haughton Honey proves to be a sweet deal for investors

Premium honey brand Haughton Honey has created a big buzz by smashing through its £80,000 crowdfunding target and collecting more than £112,000 in investments.
Over 200 investors backed the six week campaign which was launched to support the next stage in the company’s growth.
Founder Crispin Reeves said: “We’ve got high ambitions for Haughton Honey. Demand for pure, raw honey is growing in the UK and we feel there’s tremendous export potential too.
“I’m thrilled that so many investors have come on board to support us as we continue to expand, and would like to thank everyone who’s got involved. Some 98% of businesses that apply to CrowdCube don't get selected and of those 2% that do, only half successfully fund.
“It's been a gruelling four months of due diligence, promotion, meetings, sleepless nights, and answering thousands of queries but we smashed it.
Some 211 investors swarmed to get a taste of Haughton Honey – with £112,870 in total being invested.
The investment pledged to the Cheshire-based company will be used to recruit more bee farmers, expand markets and raise awareness of the brand, which was launched in 2014.
Since 2014, the firm has steadily expanded and recently began supplying the fine food retailer Booths, as well as The Protein Works, a large sports nutrition brand owned by Alliance Boots, which has just launched a co-branded Cashew Nut Butter Luxe product containing Haughton Honey.
The honey is available via more than 80 regional sales outlets across the North West and Midlands, as well as through premium supermarket Booths, which started stocking Haughton Honey at the beginning of April 2016 and which has almost 30 outlets.
During the crowdfunding campaign alone, which was operated through CrowdCube, the company secured eight new independent retailers across the Midlands and East Anglia.
The honey market within the UK is worth £119.5m per annum, with healthy annual growth. UK sales of jams, spreads and honey grew 5.9% in the year up to October 2015, with growth in honey sales alone between 2014 and 2015 increasing by £9.8m year-on-year.
During 2015 Haughton Honey packed and sold over 8,000kg of English honey and anticipates requiring more than double that amount during 2016.

More than 100 investors have backed an £80,000 crowdfunding investment campaign from premium honey brand Haughton Honey to support the next stage in the company’s growth.
Due to the high number of inquiries and strong demand for information, the timescale for investment has been extended slightly until midnight on 27th May to allow potential investors to get involved.
More than four weeks into the campaign, around £52,000 had been pledged for investment, said Haughton Honey founder Crispin Reeves.

“I’ve been delighted to see so much interest in investing in Haughton Honey and in helping us to expand and meet the growing demand for our pure, raw honey.”
Cheshire-based Haughton Honey hopes to recruit more bee farmers and move onto the next stage of growth by attracting investors via crowdfunding platform, Crowdcube, in return for shares in the business.

Sweet deal for investors as Haughton Honey launches crowdfunding bid

Premium honey brand Haughton Honey has launched an £80,000 crowdfunding investment campaign to support the next stage in the company’s growth.
The firm hopes to attract additional investors so that it can recruit more bee farmers to help satisfy the increasing demand for its pure, raw honey.
Since launching in 2014, Cheshire-based Haughton Honey has steadily expanded and recently began supplying the fine food retailer Booths.
Now it hopes to move onto the next stage of growth by attracting investors via crowdfunding platform, Crowdcube, in return for shares in the business.
Haughton Honey founder Crispin Reeves said: “The honey market alone within the UK is worth £119.5m per annum, with healthy annual growth.
“Forget spreading the love. Loving the spread is more accurate at the moment. UK sales of jams, spreads and honey grew 5.9% in the year up to October 2015, with growth in honey sales alone between 2014 and 2015 increasing by £9.8m year-on-year.
Since we began trading, we've established more than 70 regional sales outlets across the North West and Midlands, as well as recently winning our first premium supermarket customer, Booths, who started stocking Haughton Honey at the beginning of April 2016.
“During 2015 we packed and sold over 8,000kg of English honey and anticipate requiring more than double that amount during 2016. Now is the time to seek additional investment to support the growth of Haughton Honey so that we can take on more bee farmers, increase our honey production to satisfy our growing month-on-month demand, and hopefully achieve a listing with a second premium multiple retailer.”

The firm is also exploring export markets in a project spearheaded by Mel Reeves, Haughton Honey's second director and wife of Crispin. She is a professional linguist, fluent in both French and Spanish.
The company, based at Radmore Farm, Haughton, bottles raw honey which comes straight from the hive, is cold extracted and never pasteurised which means that it retains all of the natural enzymes and proteins that make English honey so special. It is also 100% natural and pure and features traces of dandelion, chestnut, blackberry, clover and other wildflowers.

As well as supplying consumers direct from its website and a wide range of retailers, the firm also recently began supplying to The Protein Works, a large sports nutrition brand owned by Alliance Boots, which has just launched a co-branded Cashew Nut Butter Luxe product containing Haughton Honey.

Any investment in Haughton Honey through the Crowdcube project will attract Seed Enterprise Investment Schemes (SEIS) tax relief.

“Businesses like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage and the Eden Project have all raised investment on Crowdcube, the world’s first and leading investment crowdfunding platform,” said Crispin Reeves. “Investing on Crowdcube is simple. All you need to do is sign up to Crowdcube’s investor community of more than 200,000 people. Registering is free, quick and has no obligations to invest.”

A series of rewards is on offer for those who invest in Haughton Honey, including discounts, honey, bee farming experiences, and hotel, restaurant and cookery school vouchers.

Haughton Honey makes a bee-line for Booths

Cheshire-based business Haughton Honey is celebrating securing its first premium major multiple retailer contract after signing a deal with Booths.
It means the high-quality honey brand will be available on the shelves of Booths outlets across the North West, including Hale Barns and Knutsford stores in Cheshire and at Media City in Salford.
The move marks a key step forward for the brand, which was launched in 2014, said founder Crispin Reeves.
“Booths, with almost 30 stores across Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, is the perfect outlet for Haughton Honey and complements the scores of independent delis, farm shops and retailers that currently stock our pure honey,” said Crispin, who is based at Haughton, near Tarporley.
“This deal is great news for the business, as we expand, and also good news for customers who now have more places where they can buy Haughton Honey.”
Haughton Honey is raw honey which comes straight from the hive, is cold extracted and never pasteurised which means that it retains all of the natural enzymes and proteins that make English honey so special. It is 100% natural and pure, and features traces of dandelion, chestnut, blackberry, clover and other wildflowers.
Haughton Honey is supplied by apiaries locally as well as from around England, all run by experienced bee-keepers, and now has more than 1,600 hives in the cooperative, stretching across the North West and the Midlands, including Cheshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.
The Booths contract launched at the end of March 2016.
“It has always been our aim to supply Haughton Honey to top-end multiple retailers, such as Booths which has an enviable reputation for its fine food and drink, and we’re delighted that our honey is now on their shelves. It’s a ringing endorsement for us and for our honey,” added Crispin.

Haughton Honey buzzing with appearance at top food and drink show

Cheshire-based honey producer Haughton Honey is joining the cream of the crop at one of the UK’s most popular food and drink events.
Bee farmer Crispin Reeves will be taking his Haughton Honey brand to the BBC Good Food Show at the NEC, Birmingham, from 26th to 29th November 2015.
The honey is currently on sale at more than 60 stores across the North West and the Midlands, with plans to expand further afield after a recent partnership with a food distribution service Bikold Foodservice. However, exhibiting at the BBC Good Food Show will be great exposure for Haughton Honey, said Crispin.
Based at Radmore Farm, Haughton, in Cheshire, the English honey brand has gone from strength to strength since launching in 2014.
Probably the most unadulterated honey that you can buy, it is the sweet essential for everyones kitchen cupboard, being perfect in puddings, flavoursome in casseroles, sauces and dressings, and the ideal substitute for sugar.
Haughton Honey now has more than 1,600 hives in the cooperative, stretching across the North West and the Midlands regions, including Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.
Haughton Honey is raw honey which comes straight from the hive, is cold extracted and never pasteurised which means that it retains all of the natural enzymes and proteins that make English honey so special. It is also 100% natural and pure and features traces of dandelion, chestnut, blackberry, clover and other wildflowers.
Its also popular with many hay fever sufferers who swear by using raw honey as a natural remedy for streaming eyes and runny noses, saying that it has helped to ease their symptoms and transform their lives. The principle behind the theory is that the tiny amounts of pollen found in raw honey helps to desensitise the body - preventing a reaction to pollen in the atmosphere during spring and early summer.
Haughton Honey is exhibiting on stand H104 in the Guild of Fine Food Great Taste section of the BBC Good Food Show from 26-29 November 2015 at the NEC, Birmingham.
Haughton Honey is available from more than 60 stores, currently across the North West and the Midlands and also through food distribution company Bikold Foodservice (www.bikold.co.uk) based in Ludlow, with plans to expand throughout the UK. Haughton Honey available through key wholesaler

Haughton Honey is now available to farm shops, delis, garden centres and other stores across central England, the West Midlands and mid-Wales via wholesaler Bikold Foodservice.
It is the first major wholesaler to take the brand, which was launched last year by bee farmer Cris Reeves.
Haughton Honey is part of the ambient product range available to Ludlow-based Bikold’s network of retailers. It is offered as a branded four-by-340g jar pack and wholesales at £15.20 per pack/£3.80 a jar.
As a result of the partnership, Haughton Honey’s direct wholesale offering will fall into line with the same pack size and price offer.
“The relationship with Bikold Foodservice is a milestone for Haughton Honey as it represents the first major wholesale partnership since the brand was launched in 2014. It will make it easier for retailers and trade customers across central England, the West Midlands and mid Wales to stock Haughton Honey, and is a key building block in our expansion plans,” said Cris, who is based in Cheshire.
“We anticipate this is the first of a number of wholesalers across the UK who we hope will take the brand.”
The Haughton Honey cooperative has approximately 1,600 hives spread across the North West and the Midlands, including Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Warwickshire. It currently supplies more than 60 stores, mainly across the North West and the Midlands but the partnership with Bikold supports the brand’s plans to expand throughout the UK.
Haughton Honey is raw honey which comes straight from the hive, is cold extracted and never pasteurised which means that it retains all of the natural enzymes and proteins that make English honey so special. Haughton Honey is 100% natural and pure, and features traces of dandelion, chestnut, blackberry, clover and other wildflowers.

Not so busy bees, reports Haughton Honey

This years honey harvest is likely to be about a third of the size of last years crop after poor weather affected nectar flow, says bee farmer Cris Reeves.
Wet weather and cooler temperatures during key times of nectar production over the spring and summer have led to a dramatic drop in the amount of honey harvested across the country this season.
But stocks of Haughton Honey remain buoyant thanks to a bumper honey harvest in 2014 and the cooperatives approximate 1,600 hives spread across the North West and the Midlands, including Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire and Warwickshire says Cris.
The honey crop can fluctuate quite widely from one year to the next and, in the main, its all down to the weather,he explained. 2013 was an atrocious year as we had a very long winter and spring never really got going. Last year was really very good by comparison. Bee farmers that contribute to the Haughton Honey brand harvested more than 24,000 kilos of honey during 2014. This year, however, it looks like these hives will produce little over 10,000 kilos – significantly less than half of what was collected last year. After talking to bee farmers across the country, it looks likely that the honey harvest generally could be around a third of last year’s crop. Matters could become very seriously compounded if next year turns out to be similar to this one though.
We have enough volume to supply our existing customers and take on new ones, but were hoping that next year proves to be a better year weather-wise for the bees and for the livelihood of bee farmers, who play an extremely important role within the natural ecosystem and who receive no farming subsidies from the European Union.”
Honey bees collect nectar to deposit into honeycomb cells before it is turned into honey, so adverse weather at key times of nectar production impacts on the amount of honey available in a season.
Cris launched Haughton Honey last year and supplies more than 60 stores, currently across the North West and the Midlands but with plans to expand throughout the UK.
Although the honey harvest has dropped dramatically and there is likely to be less of a honey harvest across much of England, he and his fellow bee farmers hope that this wont lead to a shortage of British honey as stocks from last year were high. Honey is the only food product that doesnt deteriorate over time, added Cris, who has been a bee farmer for more than ten years.
“Were still processing, but there definitely wont be anywhere near as much English honey around this season as a result of the weather, said Cris. News in the South East is slightly better, but across most of the UK including the North West, Midlands, South West, Wales and other areas its been a similar picture.”
Poly-floral, or wildflower honey, is harvested twice a year – usually during May and August.
Earlier this year, Haughton Honey was named as one of ten short-listed products in the sweet preserves category of the Great British Food Farm Produce Awards 2015, run by Great British Food Magazine.

North West honey farmer gears up for the hay fever season

Bee farmer Cris Reeves is gearing up for a rush in demand for honey ahead of the start of the hay fever season.

Thousands of people swear by using raw honey as a natural remedy for streaming eyes and runny noses, saying that it has helped to ease their symptoms and transform their lives.

Crispin Reeves- Bee Farmer
The principle behind the theory is that the tiny amounts of pollen found in raw honey helps to desensitise the body - preventing a reaction to pollen in the atmosphere during spring and early summer.

Cris, who runs Haughton Honey, based near Tarporley in Cheshire, said: “Many of our customers in the North West buy our honey because they know that the bees have made it in this country and that the honey is raw, so it still contains traces of intact pollen.

“It doesn't matter too much if the hive that your honey comes from is on your doorstep or fifty miles away because our national flora is fairly similar across most of the country. But try and opt for multi-floral honey, which Haughton Honey is, as it will contain a good mix of pollens.

“Thousands of people swear by taking a spoonful of honey a day, well in advance of the start of the hay fever season, as a natural remedy to the symptoms of hay fever. We’re already noticing an increase in demand and expect that to rise as we move towards early summer. The medical evidence is anecdotal at the moment, but we know for a fact that a lot of our customers buy Haughton Honey to try to ward off some of the unpleasant symptoms they suffer during the hay fever season.”

Cris launched Haughton Honey last year and already has more than 50 stockists across the North West. In Cheshire, these include The Monacle Deli in Macclesfield, The Hollies Farm Shop at Little Budworth, The Gift Shop at Chester Cathedral, Cheerbrook Farm Shop, Nantwich, and Walter Smith Fine Foods, Bridgemere Garden World near Nantwich.

Bottled at Radmore Farm, Haughton, the raw honey comes straight from the hive, is cold extracted and never pasteurised which means that it retains all of the natural enzymes and proteins that make English honey so special.

Haughton Honey is 100% natural and pure, and features traces of dandelion, chestnut, lime, blackberry, clover and other wildflowers. Five pence from the sale of every jar of Haughton Honey goes to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to help protect bumblebees, and preserve and restore their habitats.

Cris, who has been bee-keeping for more than ten years, owns 300 hives. He is supplementing his supply of honey from apiaries around England, all run by experienced bee-keepers, and now has more than 1,600 hives in the cooperative, stretching across the North West and the Midlands, including Cheshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.

Anila’s Authentic Sauces on sale in ‘garden centre of the year’

Award-winning premium curry sauces and accompaniments from Anila’s Authentic Sauces are now on sale at Bents Garden & Home, Cheshire – four times holder of the best destination garden centre in the UK.

The outlet is the first stockist of Anila’s range in the area.

Around 18 products made by Anila’s Authentic Sauces are now on sale in the food hall at the garden centre in Glazebury, near Warrington, which was named the Garden Centre Association Destination Garden Centre of the Year in 2011 for the third year running.

“We recently had a very successful tasting session at Bents Garden & Home – their customers loved our range of curry sauces, chutneys and pickles – and so I am delighted that the luxury food hall has become our first garden centre stockist in Cheshire,” said Anila Vaghela, who founded Anila’s Authentic Sauces in 1997.

“Our sauces are premium products that contain only natural ingredients, and are free from dairy, gluten, added sugar, onion and garlic. They are also suitable for vegans and vegetarians, so they are perfect for a wide range of customers. We are sure they will go down very well with customers in the speciality food hall of Bents Garden & Home, which specialises in products from local, national and international suppliers with impeccable provenance.”

Established in 1937, Bents is a family run business that has grown from a small garden centre into a destination for quality, home, garden and leisure shopping. Its food hall is an emporium for food lovers.

Anila’s products, which sell through delis, farm shops, garden centres, health food stores and quality food retailers, have recently unveiled new labels to reflect the distinct characteristics of the range and to promote the concentrated nature of the superb Indian curry sauces – adding water doubles the quantity of curry sauce. Behind the labels are guides to making the perfect authentic meal using the ingredients of choice, along with serving suggestions and contact details for even more great recipe ideas.
