Croots Farm Shop scores success in British Sausage Week Awards

Derbyshire farm shop Croots has struck gold once again with its brilliant bangers after winning awards as part of British Sausage Week 2016.
The farm shop near Duffield received gold awards for its Pork Sausage, Italian Sausage and Welsh Dragon Sausage, along with a silver award for its Lincolnshire Sausage.
The awards were made to celebrate British Sausage Week 2016, which runs from 31st October to 6th November and is now in its 19th year.
Steve Croot, who runs Croots Farm Shop at Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, with wife Kay, said: “Our butchers are renowned for their skills in creating tasty flavours of sausages, which are made here on the premises of Croots. We’ve won stacks of awards for our bangers and meat products, but it’s great news to have won four more awards as part of British Sausage Week.
“Our customers are huge fans of sausages – our biggest seller – and we’re looking forward to once again celebrating British Sausage Week with a range of offers and an extensive selection of sausages, with something to suit all tastes.”
Croots Farm Shop is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm (Shires Eatery until 4.30pm) and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Croots runs Fresh Fish Thursdays between 9am and 1pm on Thursdays.

Focus Consultants designs new mental health unit

Focus Consultants is playing a key role in a scheme to create Lincolnshire’s first psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU).
Work is expected to get underway shortly on the project, which involves transforming existing unused ward space on the St George’s Hospital site in Lincoln into a brand new ten-bed unit to provide intensive support closer to home for those with severe mental health problems.
Focus designed the scheme using Building Information Modelling (BIM) for the county’s mental health and learning disabilities services provider, Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT).
The company, based in Nottingham and with offices in Boston and Aubourn in Lincolnshire, as well as in London and Leicester, is currently appointed as principle designer, designer, quantity surveyor and contract administrator for the development of the male-only unit. 
“This is a significant scheme for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and for those who will be cared for at the unit, being the first psychiatric intensive care unit in the county of Lincolnshire,” said Focus Consultants senior project manager Andy White. “Focus Consultants is proud to have been appointed to several roles on this development, which is the latest in a number of hospital and healthcare projects that the company has been involved with in Lincolnshire and elsewhere.”
A PICU is a specialist psychiatric inpatient ward for patients with complex mental health needs who require intensive support The Lincoln development will help remove the need for some patients to travel out of the county in order to receive the level of care required, and is due to become operational and accept patients by next summer.

We wanted to create a modern, homely, safe environment that will aid recovery and the designs for the new unit meet all of these requirements.”   
The unit at Carholme Court will accommodate ten individual en-suite bedrooms, plus a gymnasium, multi-faith room and lounge area for patients, as well as a secure and safe outdoor space.
The scheme has been designed by Focus to be compliant with guidelines from NAPICU - the national association that is committed to developing and promoting the speciality of psychiatric intensive care and low secure services - and best practice principles in better bedroom initiative for mental health patients.
Focus offers a range of services to the property and construction industry, including building surveying, quantity surveying, project management, and sustainable development support.

Customers help J Tomlinson raise money for charitable donation

Derbyshire students are benefiting to the tune of £1,000 thanks to the cooperation of Futures Housing Group customers and the generosity of J Tomlinson, the company that services and maintains their boilers.
J Tomlinson operates the maintenance and servicing contract for the housing organisation, and each time the company’s staff are given first-time access to a customer’s home to carry out work, the firm donates £1 to invest into the community.
Now representatives from J Tomlinson’s repairs and maintenance team and Futures Housing Group have presented £1,000 to Heanor Gate Science College to be spent on new sports equipment for the academy in Kirkley Drive, Heanor, after the success of the fundraising scheme.
“We are delighted to be donating £1,000 to Heanor Gate Science College and would like to thank customers of Futures Housing Group for their cooperation in supporting the J Tomlinson team to carry out essential servicing, repairs and maintenance on the boilers at their homes,” said Dave Fisher, operations manager at J Tomlinson.
“Allowing us first-time access helps us to provide the most efficient service that we can and this donation represents a thousand times that we’ve been able to achieve first-time access to tenants’ homes. At the same time, we’ve been able to raise money for a good community initiative, so it’s a win, win situation all round.”
Dave was joined by Futures Housing Group representatives Sharon Holmes, asset management coordinator, and Jason Topley, gas surveyor, for a cheque presentation at the college.
Principal at Heanor Gate Science College, Stephen Huntington, said: “We are very grateful for the donation from J Tomlinson and would like to add our thanks to the Futures Housing Group tenants who have supported this fundraising initiative which will allow us to purchase sports equipment for our PE department.”
Jason Topley, gas surveyor at Futures Housing Group, said: “The safety of our customers is absolutely imperative and ensuring our boilers are regularly maintained is a big part of that. J Tomlinson staff being able to gain first time access to so many of our properties provides great peace of mind and also saves a lot of time and energy. It’s fantastic that J Tomlinson have made this donation and it’s great that a local school can benefit from our organisations working together so well.”
J Tomlinson, which is based at Beeston near Nottingham, has a long-term contract with Futures Housing Group to carry out maintenance and servicing of the organisation’s boilers at over 6,000 homes across Derbyshire, including Amber Valley and Erewash.
Futures Housing Group provides more than 9,000 affordable homes throughout the East Midlands, including over 6,000 homes in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and around 3,000 homes in Northamptonshire.

Contractor J Tomlinson starts work on new ambulance station

Nottingham-based J Tomlinson has been appointed to build a new community ambulance station by St. Modwen at its Etruria Valley scheme in Stoke-on-Trent.
The 18,865 sq ft development is for West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) which is re-locating from its current location in Penkhull to the purpose-built hub facility and community ambulance station, allowing the expansion of the service to meet the needs of the city’s growing population.
It will be used principally for the maintenance and preparation of ambulance vehicles, including the repair, cleaning, re-stock and storage of ambulances and supplies, ensuring that ambulances are stocked and ready to go at the start of a shift. Part of the building will also provide offices along with training space and facilities for staff. 
Work has just got underway on the scheme, which is the latest that J Tomlinson has been involved with for St. Modwen.
Martin Gallagher, managing director (construction) at contractor J Tomlinson, said: “J Tomlinson is pleased to have been appointed by St. Modwen to build the new ambulance facility serving the North Staffordshire community. 
“This is the third scheme that we have constructed for St. Modwen, and also continues our existing relationship with West Midlands Ambulance Service, for whom we currently maintain 92 sites in the region.”
Euan Lindsay, senior development manager at St. Modwen, said: “Etruria Valley offers an ideal location for the new ambulance hub, providing easy access to the A500 arterial road which runs through Stoke-on-Trent a key component for the service in improving response times.
“The new purpose-built building will allow the service to accommodate its space requirements and expand in order to meet the demands of the city’s growing population.” 
Nick Henry, general manager for Staffordshire and Arden at WMAS, added: “Whilst the existing facility on Hilton Road has served the people of Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding areas extremely well since it was built in 1971, the increase in demand and higher clinical standards required mean it is no longer fit for purpose. 
“The new Community Ambulance Station will enable the service to provide the very best facilities, ensuring that our growing fleet of ambulances can be cleaned, prepared and restocked on a 24/7 basis so that we can continue to provide the highest standards of care to the people of North Staffordshire.” 
The site forms part phase 2 of the Etruria Valley redevelopment, which is already home to Vodafone, DPD Group and Hanley Economic Building Society.
Etruria Valley is part of Festival Park extending to over 300 acres and comprises major office and commercial development, a retail park, Leisure Park, 4-star 150-bedroom hotel, restaurants and housing. The development is strategically located off the A53 dual carriageway and within 400 metres of the A500 urban expressway, linking Stoke to junctions 15 and 16 on the M6.

New Secretary takes the reins at the Shire Horse Society

The Shire Horse Society has announced the appointment of Victoria Clayton as its new Secretary.
Victoria, who has been involved in the Shire world for more than 25 years, takes up the reins from 7th November 2016.
A qualified surveyor and agricultural valuer, and a Harper Adams University graduate, she is a keen horse rider who predominantly competes in ridden hunter classes and has enjoyed success at the Horse of the Year Show in the recent past. Victoria’s family has the Westfield Shire Stud, based in Yorkshire.
Victoria said: “I am delighted to accept the role of Secretary at the Shire Horse Society, and I am looking forward to getting started.
“The society has carried out some great work in the past, however, it is key that we look to bring about new initiatives to cement the future of the breed. One of my main aims is to improve the society’s communication with the membership and in doing so we must always strive to continue to promote, protect and preserve the Shire horse breed.”
Victoria has previously been a member of the council at the Shire Horse Society and this year co-ordinated the organisation’s appearance at the first ever BBC Countryfile Live event, gaining significant national TV and newspaper exposure for the society and demonstrating the breed to over 125,000 visitors to the event at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire.
The Shire Horse Society, which is based at Shire Farm, Rockingham Castle on the border of Northamptonshire and Leicestershire, is the only national charity dedicated to the protection, promotion and improvement of the Shire horse. The iconic Shire breed was in danger of dying out just a few decades ago, and even now fewer than 500 new foals are registered every year by the Shire Horse Society.
Its annual national show is the world’s largest gathering of Shires and is believed to be one of the oldest, almost continuous, horse shows in the world, having been held for the first time at the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington, London, in 1880, when the charity was named the English Cart Horse Society.
Next year it will take place from 17th to 19th March 2017 at Staffordshire Showground in the West Midlands.

Economic funding courses staged by Focus Consultants and Nottingham Trent University

Two experts from Focus Consultants, who have helped to secure millions of pounds’ worth of grants for clients, will be sharing their advice at two one-day courses for built environment professionals. 
Focus founding partner Kevin Osbon and partner Heather Frecklington, who have both been involved in some of the UK’s most prestigious development projects, are joining forces with Nottingham Trent University to run the courses.
Aimed at those professionals who are involved in the planning and financing of projects, course one turns the spotlight on economic impact assessment and evaluation, while the second course focuses on The Green Book business case and will look at central government’s core tool for making public funding decisions.
The courses, which are being run in conjunction with the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment at NTU, are due to be held on 3rdand 4th November 2016 at Nottingham Conference Centre at NTU’s City Campus.

Maintenance contract at West Bromwich Building Society for J Tomlinson

J Tomlinson Ltd has been appointed by West Bromwich Building Society as maintenance contractor at its head office premises after successfully completing the mechanical and electrical work on the new building. 
The five-storey, 6,500sq m headquarters opened on a site at Providence Place in West Bromwich town centre earlier this year and has around 500 staff working in it.
J Tomlinson’s M&E department played a key role in the development, carrying out the £4.8 million M&E work at the building. Now the Black Country’s biggest building society has appointed the company on a one-year maintenance contract for the site.
“Coming on the back of the successful completion of the M&E services during the development phase of the building, this appointment for the maintenance contract is a ringing endorsement of the standard and quality of workmanship provided by the J Tomlinson team,” said J Tomlinson managing director for facilities management Steve Kirkland.
“The West Brom’s new headquarters is an impressive development and we are delighted to have been appointed to undertake the maintenance of it.”
Working across the West Midlands, East Midlands and Yorkshire, J Tomlinson has its head office in Nottingham and provides a range of integrated building solutions including construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical engineering (M&E), and facilities management.  
The company has been expanding in recent times, partly as a result of winning an increasing number of contracts in the West Midlands, where it recently opened a new, larger office in Canwell, near Sutton Coldfield.
J Tomlinson has been appointed to a four-year framework contract by Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police which is now part of a joint property vehicle with four other public sector bodies known as Place Partnerships, covering servicing, maintenance, reactive repairs and minor works. The award has a potential value of up to £9.1 million over the lifetime of the agreement.
Last year, the firm won a five-year contract worth £10 million to replace kitchens and bathrooms in around 1,600 properties in Birmingham, Coventry, Stoke, Walsall and Wolverhampton for housing organisation Midland Heart, and has a £10 million gas servicing and repair contract with housing provider and social organisation Bromford. The firm is also constructing a new build care home for Hamberley Development and a new building for Sutton Coldfield Conservative Club on the same site in Sutton Coldfield, with a total value of £6 million.
In addition, J Tomlinson has mechanical and electrical maintenance contracts with the University of Birmingham and West Midlands Fire Service.

Croots Farm Shop celebrates Shire horse success at world’s most famous horse show

The team at Croots Farm Shop in Derbyshire is celebrating after a Shire horse which grazes at the farm took one of the top slots at the prestigious Horse of the Year Show.
Evie was awarded reserve champion in the Shire Horse of the Year Championship at the event, which is the world’s most famous horse show 
Full name Sheepwash Derbyshire Eventide, she was one of two Shire horses from Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, near Duffield, which qualified for the championship.
It was the first time since the 1970s that Shire horse breeders Jim and Sue Yates had qualified two of their horses at the event, and it proved to be a special day for the whole family when Evie came second in her championship.
Jim and Sue’s daughter Kay Croot, who runs Croots Farm Shop with husband Steve, helped prepare and plait Evie, while their son David Yates, who runs Derbyshire bakery Luke Evans, led Evie in the ring.
“It was the first time since the 1970s that my parents had qualified two horses for the Horse of the Year Show, so it was a great achievement and wonderful to be a part of what is regarded as the most famous horse show in the world,” said Kay. “David took Evie into the ring and I took the other horse that qualified, Cowerslane Lady Helen. It was a real family affair.”
Jim and Sue have been breeding and rearing Shire horses for decades, and are amongst the longest established families in the Shire horse world. 
It was Evie’s sixth consecutive appearance at the Shire Horse of the Year Championship and she has now taken second place twice, as well as a third and a fourth position.
The Horse of the Year Show was held at Birmingham’s NEC, and marks the end of the equestrian season, being the champion of champions show.

Senior promotions at civil and structural engineer BSP Consulting

East Midlands-based civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting has made a series of internal promotions as the company continues to grow.
Former associate director Paul Elphick, who heads up the Leicester office of BSP, has been appointed as a director, while Matthew Viggars, who leads BSP’s civil engineering team in Derby, has stepped up from associate to associate director.
In addition, chartered structural engineer Adam Hancocks has been made an associate, working out of the company’s Nottingham headquarters.
BSP has also promoted Oliver Dike, who is based in Derby, and Craig Noonan, who works in Nottingham, to senior engineers. 
Chartered structural engineer Paul Elphick joined the company in 2004, while chartered civil engineer Matthew has been at BSP since 2005. Adam Hancocks arrived at BSP in 2011.

Winners of the East Midlands fbe Awards 2016 revealed

A university’s carbon neutral laboratory building which is a centre of excellence for green chemistry has been crowned the overall winner of the East Midlands fbe Awards 2016.
The GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry at the University of Nottingham’s Innovation Park on the Jubilee Campus had earlier also taken the top prize in the Non-residential category at the annual awards ceremony held at the City Rooms in Leicester.
The building has been constructed by the university in partnership with the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and Impact: The Nottingham Campaign, the university’s largest ever fundraising appeal to change lives, tackle global issues and shape the future. 
Nominated by main contractor Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure Ltd, the project team also included architects Fairhursts Design Group (FDG), structural engineer Curtins Consulting and AECOM (BREEAM and LEED assessors, concept structural engineer, M&E consultant), KLH Sustainability (Embodied Carbon Consultant), and Anthesis (Embodied Carbon Auditor).
The judges said: “Superb collaboration between stakeholders sits behind many of the award-winning attributes of this project. From striking design, to high-levels of sustainability, this scheme showcases world-class design using natural materials. The judging panel felt this scheme far surpasses any other submission in terms of its contribution to the creation of new employment which should be acknowledged.  An exceptional building that will become a world hub for new science while simultaneously delivering an architectural landmark for generations of students to enjoy.”
The winner of the Residential category was a short-stay accommodation scheme for nationwide charity Canine Partners at Osgathorpe in north west Leicestershire. The £750,000 project is part of a three-phase £4 million investment to create a new Midlands centre for the charity, which trains assistance dogs for people with disabilities. It was nominated by North Midland Construction PLC. Other members of the team were architects PWP, structural engineer ASP Consulting and project manager/employer’s agent Baqus Ltd.
The judges said: “This scheme expertly showcases the use of low carbon materials resulting in accommodation that meets the precise needs of the brief. Using a variety of materials and finishes, the building is both aesthetically pleasing yet delivers a strong visual identity. The judging panel was particularly impressed by the way the design reflected the practical needs of its residents.”
Nottingham’s new £3.7 million London Road Fire Station, built by J Tomlinson Ltd for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, took the honours in the Regeneration category. The architect was CPMG, structural engineer Curtins, project manager was CPMG’s client Turner & Townsend, and mechanical and electrical consultants was Couch Perry Wilkes.
The judges said: “Demonstrating excellent use of technology and natural elements, this is a complex project needing to take into account the practical needs of the fire station and blend with the city’s existing south side regeneration plans. This scheme should be highly commended for showcasing our industry to the local community and indeed showcasing construction as a profession.”
A new category at this year’s awards ceremony, which attracted around 150 professionals from across the East Midlands construction, property and development sector, was Best Rising Star – an award for the younger generation of professionals who are making a significant contribution to the built environment.
Part II Architectural Assistant at RG+P in Leicester, Sarah Grocock, was named the inaugural winner after impressing the judges with her academic and practical experience and abilities.
The judges said: “Sarah’s contribution to the construction industry is already impressive. She is a true rising star and will undoubtedly go on to influence other young construction professionals throughout her career. The judging panel were impressed by her boundless energy and commitment to learning and developing her skills. Without question Sarah has already made a significant contribution to our industry through her work on a range of housing schemes and will no doubt become an influential architect.” 
Her nominators William Smedley and James Badley said: “Sarah already has a host of achievements and a wealth of talent. As her passion for the industry grows, so does her knowledge and ability. Sarah will undoubtedly go on to lead and influence the construction industry.”
Jef Todd, regional chairman of the East Midlands fbe and business development director at civil and structural engineering company BSP Consulting, was delighted by the success of the awards ceremony and praised the diversity and strength of the nominations.
“We had an excellent array of nominations from across the region and across a range of sectors, illustrating the high standard of developments that are being completed in the East Midlands built environment,” he said. “I’d like to congratulate all those who were shortlisted, as well as the winners, and thank the construction, property and development sector in the region for their support of these awards, which focus on sustainability, good design, and interaction and engagement with the local community.”
The awards, hosted once again by former BBC East Midlands political editor John Hess, were sponsored by D W Hicks Building Co Ltd, integrated building solutions company J Tomlinson Ltd, civil engineering, mechanical and electrical (M&E) engineers BSD, engineering and environmental consultants M-EC Consulting Development Engineers and chartered accountants and business advisers Duncan & Toplis. During the evening, £1,800 was raised for the NSPCC.
The fbe is a national organisation, with branches across the UK and is the longest established networking group for the property, development and construction industries. As well as running the annual awards scheme, the organisation also organises a number of social and other events. The East Midlands branch covers Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.
