Construction Leaders Club focuses on navigating through Brexit

Construction Leaders Club workshop.
Business growth organisation, the Construction Leaders Club, is running a series of workshops to help firms in the sector become ‘Brexit ready’.
The East Midlands-based group has created a framework to help businesses protect themselves and plan for growth and development beyond Brexit.
Now the Construction Leaders Club is planning to share the ideas in a series of workshops to be run in the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire area – starting in February.
Business growth consultant Terry O’Mahony, who runs CLC, said: “Small business owners don't always have the time or resources to effectively lead and manage seismic changes in the marketplace and their business. We are heading into uncharted waters as the UK prepares to leave the European Union, and it’s vital that small and medium-sized businesses do what they can to prepare as much as possible for this.
“The team at the Construction Leaders Club has made it their mission to be on hand to help business leaders and managers navigate their way through and beyond Brexit.”
The Construction Leaders Club, which is believed to be the only business growth, leadership and management development organisation for the construction industry to be awarded the new Chartered Building Consultancy status, was founded by Terry O’Mahony four years ago. It offers networking and business growth advice - supporting businesses and individuals related to or associated with the UK construction industry.
The workshops will be run by Terry and Peter Jubb, a business development and marketing consultant who has worked within the construction sector for many years, and will be held at Risley Hall Hotel, Risley in Derbyshire, near junction 25 of the M1 – starting on 9th February 2018.
“In just one workshop, we will be offering advice on how to re-engineer businesses, accelerate profitability, reduce exposure to commercial risk and to leveraging every opportunity open to business leaders,” explained Terry. “We welcome small business owners, senior decision makers and leaders who want to develop their business and teams.”
The first half-day workshop runs from 9am to noon, and will focus on the importance of being Brexit ready, how to understand fully your current business situation; identify and evaluate the best way forward; and create an effective plan.
As well as running development programmes and workshops, the CLC also stages monthly networking events, with the next one scheduled for Thursday 8th February at 10am at The Grill at Twenty Five, 25 Bostock’s Lane, Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire, NG10 4EP.

Group MD to speak at new construction sector networking event in Lincoln

Tracey Glew
The group MD of one of the leading businesses in surface preparation will be the guest speaker when the Construction Leaders Club launches its networking events in Lincoln.
Tracey Glew, who founded Lincoln-based The Preparation Group in 1991, will be giving a presentation about setting industry standards.
She will be talking at the pilot event on 15th September, which marks the expansion of networking and business growth organisation the Construction Leaders Club into the city.
The organisation has been running successful networking events and programmes for professionals working in the sector in the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire areas for the past four years.
Now it is taking its proven formula to Lincoln and hoping to successfully bring together those in Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and the surrounding districts who work in the construction sector or in a business associated with the construction sector.
The inaugural session, which is being sponsored by The Preparation Group and held at the company’s Training Hub at Preparation House, Deacon Road, Lincoln, is to be held from 10am to noon on 15thSeptember.
“Since founding The Preparation Group, Tracey has grown the business to become a leading business in surface preparation and we are delighted that she will be speaking at our launch event in Lincoln,” said business growth expert Terry O’Mahony, who founded and runs the Construction Leaders Club.
“We are looking forward to taking our proven formula of connecting businesses and their professional teams into the Lincoln area – giving those who work within the construction sector and associated professions the chance to network and to find out more about each other and the services they provide, as well as discovering more about the business growth and development opportunities offered by the Construction Leaders Club.”
As well as monthly networking events, Construction Leaders Club also runs development programmes and workshops for individuals including a Mastermind Programme, aimed at business owners and senior decision makers, and a Rising Stars Programme for high potential individuals who want to step-up to the next level. New courses on each programme are expected to begin this Autumn.
The organisation, which is supported in Nottingham by Nelsons Solicitors, insurance and risk brokers Arthur J Gallagher and audit, tax and consulting services provider RSM, who will also be sponsoring the Lincoln event, earlier this year became what is believed to be the only business growth, leadership and management development organisation for the construction industry to be awarded the new Chartered Building Consultancy status.
Tracey Glew heads up an organisation that has grown to become a market leader in surface preparation. The Preparation Group specialises in the full preparation of any surface from concrete to marble. It has completed jobs worldwide and worked in such prestigious and high-profile locations as Buckingham Palace, the London Eye and Manchester United’s ground. The firm has operated in factories, supermarkets, airports, ships and hangars for multi-billion-pound jets.
It is now a centre of expertise - providing environmentally friendly solutions for preparing, cleaning and finishing almost any surface in any market sector, as well as providing training.
Tracey said: “I am looking forward to welcoming the Construction Leaders Club to Lincoln and to the headquarters of The Preparation Group. I am proud to be the guest speaker at this inaugural event in Lincoln, and I hope the construction sector in the area supports it and finds it a useful way to network and build contacts and associates.”

Three reasons why small businesses should have a strategy, according to Construction Leaders Club

Terry O'Mahony
A business networking and development organisation for the East Midlands construction sector is highlighting three key reasons why it’s important for small businesses to plan.
The Construction Leaders Club believes that having a strategy is fundamental for success – even though situations can change rapidly in today’s fast-moving world.
“Not so long ago, business owners and leaders created strategic plans that looked ahead five to ten years – a far longer-term perspective than would be appropriate today,” said Terry O’Mahony, founder of the Nottingham-based Construction Leaders Club.
“However, having a plan today is still fundamental for any business to stay ahead of the competition and be truly successful. Although there are numerous tools to help develop a plan, there is no standard methodology, and it is down to business owners to choose tools that work for them.”
He believes there are three main reasons why small businesses should draw up strategies for the future.
Firstly, it provides clarity and direction to give both business owners and employees alike the high-level priorities and objectives that they want to achieve over a specific time period, said Terry.
Secondly, it’s an opportunity to engage and motivate employees, while thirdly it can help to position a business, he added.
“Many business owners I have worked with have often said that when they have taken the time to develop a plan, they’ve made the mistake of putting it in their drawer where it doesn’t see daylight again,” said Terry. “This might not be because the plan wasn’t good. It could be that the plan may have been created for a specific purpose, for example to attract funding or similar, and, as and when the purpose has been served, they are unsure why it matters. But it does matter and having a plan can make a big difference.”
The Construction Leaders Club was established four years ago as a networking and business growth organisation supporting businesses and individuals related to, or associated with, the UK construction industry. As well as monthly networking events, CLC also runs development programmes and workshops for individuals including a Mastermind Programme, aimed at business owners and senior decision makers, and a Rising Stars Programme for high potential individuals who want to step-up to the next level. New courses on each programme are expected to begin this Autumn.
CLC’s next networking events take place on 14th September at The Grill at Twenty Five, Bostock Lane, Long Eaton, near Nottingham, from 10am, and on 15th September at The Preparation Group, Preparation House, Deacon Road, Lincoln, from 10am.
The organisation is supported by Nelsons Solicitors, insurance and risk brokers Arthur J Gallagher and audit, tax and consulting services provider RSM.
Earlier this year the CLC became what is believed to be the only business growth, leadership and management development organisation for the construction industry to be awarded the new Chartered Building Consultancy status.
Construction Leaders Club has held the accolade of Chartered Building Consultancy status for the past three years but the CIOB asked holders to re-apply after setting down new and tighter rules for compliance in a bid to drive up standards within the sector.

Construction sector small business support group expands into Lincolnshire

Terry O'Mahony
A new business networking event for the construction sector is launching in Lincolnshire after successful networking and business growth organisation the Construction Leaders Club (CLC) announced it is expanding.
The pilot session takes place in Lincoln on 15th September and is open to anyone who works within the construction sector or in a business associated with the construction industry.
Sponsored by Lincoln-based The Preparation Group, the trial networking event follows the success of CLC in Nottingham. Its monthly networking meetings attract professionals from across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. It also run a series of aligned and well-received business growth programmes for small business owners and senior decision makers.
Terry O’Mahony, who founded and runs the organisation, said: “Over the last four years the Construction Leaders Club has been very successful in building a networking event for construction industry professionals in the Nottingham, Derby, Leicester area and we want to take it east and north to Lincolnshire and the surrounding districts as a proven formula for connecting businesses and their professional teams.
“As well as networking opportunities, we offer business growth and development training programmes for small businesses associated with the construction sector. We welcome anyone working in the sector or alongside the sector who is interested in networking or in business growth and development to join us on 15th September at our trial event in Lincoln.”
Founded by business growth expert Terry O’Mahony in Nottingham, CLC was established as a networking and business growth organisation supporting businesses and individuals related to, or associated with, the UK construction industry.
The organisation is supported in Nottingham by Nelsons Solicitors, insurance and risk brokers Arthur J Gallagher and audit, tax and consulting services provider RSM, who will also be sponsoring the Lincoln event.
Terry added: “We very much hope that the construction community in Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and surrounding areas will support our expansion by joining us on 15th September and also by considering sponsorship of any future events. If it is to become a regularly held and successful networking event then we need some leading organisations to step forward, get involved and support us.”
September’s event will include a presentation by group managing director of The Preparation Group, Tracey Glew, on setting the industry standards, and takes place between 10am to noon at The Training Hub, Preparation House, Deacon Road, Lincoln LN2 4JB. Personal trainers are not just for the gym, says business coach and Construction Leaders Club founder

Terry O'Mahony
Business professionals are being urged to treat their business growth aspirations the way they treat their fitness programmes – and hire themselves a personal trainer/business growth coach.
Terry O’Mahony, who runs the East Midlands-based Construction Leaders Club, says that small business coaching helps small business owners reach their targets in just the same way as a personal trainer helps fitness fans to meet their physical goals.
“Many people have personal trainers at the gym or fitness club, who coach them in the best ways to get the most out of their workout,” said Terry. “Yet small business owners sometimes forget that they can do the same in their business life and hire a coach to help them make the most of their role and the businesses they run or own.
“As someone who has worked in the construction sector all my life, my mission is to get the whole construction industry coached because it can lead to tremendous benefits for business, the construction industry and society at large.”
Terry established The Construction Leaders Club in Nottingham four years ago as a networking and business growth organisation supporting businesses and individuals related to or associated with the UK construction industry.
As a business growth and development coach, he has worked with many professionals to develop their skills, and he believes business coaching can help with problem solving, overcoming challenges, client retention, building a dream team, generating additional revenue and implementing positive changes.
“I work with small business owners, primarily associated with the construction industry, who want to grow and develop themselves and their businesses. I only coach small business owners who are already successful but who want to get to the next level and beyond,” added Terry, who has 40 years in the construction industry operating at every level and at every phase in the construction process.
“The moment I first started coaching, it felt free. I love small business coaching and I love helping people grow, develop and get the results they want. Financially speaking I could retire right now, but I love what I do. I love coaching, learning and training.
“Imagine this. If every small business owner was doing what they loved to do and what they were meant to do and were operating from their strengths, they would all be more successful, effective and profitable.”
The Construction Leaders Club was recently recognised for its high professional standards by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) by becoming what is believed to be the only business growth, leadership and management development organisation for the construction industry to be awarded the new Chartered Building Consultancy status.
The next Construction Leaders Club networking events take place on 13th April and 11th May at The Grill at Twenty Five, 25 Bostock’s Lane, Long Eaton, near Nottingham. For more details or to book, or to find out about the small business coaching offered by CLC, visit http://www.constructionleadersclub.com/

Construction Leaders Club recognised for its excellence

Terry O'Mahony
East Midlands-based Construction Leaders Club has been recognised for its high professional standards by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
The team has become what is believed to be the only business growth, leadership and management development organisation for the construction industry to be awarded the new Chartered Building Consultancy status.
Construction Leaders Club has held the accolade of Chartered Building Consultancy status for the past three years but the CIOB asked holders to re-apply after setting down new and tighter rules for compliance in a bid to drive up standards within the sector.
“I am very pleased that the Construction Leaders Club has met the more stringent conditions required to gain Chartered Building Consultancy status from the CIOB, which reflects the exacting and ethical standards that we follow in our training programmes, coaching and consultancy,” said business growth expert Terry O’Mahony, who runs CLC.
“This accreditation gives individuals and companies in the construction sector, whether they are large firms or small organisations, the confidence that they will receive the most professional support via our services and expertise.”
The Construction Leaders Club was established in Nottingham three years ago by Terry as a networking and business growth organisation supporting businesses and individuals related to or associated with the UK construction industry. As well as monthly networking events, CLC also runs development programmes and workshops for individuals including a Mastermind Programme, aimed at business owners and senior decision makers, and a Rising Stars Programme for high potential individuals who want to step-up to the next level.
Terry has warned that although businesses and individuals in the construction sector appear to be very busy currently, they should aim to keep an eye on the future.
“I get the impression that many people working in construction at the moment are running in circles, fighting fires and having to deal with all manner of other problems and so they find it difficult to get out of the office to learn how to build their businesses or careers,” he said. “Few of them are planning for growth properly not to mention preparing for the next recession or crash. But time out of the office to plan is crucial.
“In my experience, business leaders are not always really sure how to address the question of business planning so they just carry on as normal, not really wanting, or expecting, more out of their business or are just happy to receive what the market gives them instead of paving their own path. Coaching or training could really help.”
The next Construction Leaders Club networking events take place on 9th March and 13th April at The Grill at Twenty Five, 25 Bostock’s Lane, Long Eaton, near Nottingham. For more details or to book visit http://www.constructionleadersclub.com/

Business boosted for CLC Mastermind Programme graduates

Keith Rodgers from Guy Taylor Associates
Graduates of a mastermind development programme for those working in the East Midlands construction sector have praised the course after experiencing a range of business benefits.
Participants have opened new branch offices, drawn up plans to take on extra staff, and put in place other expansion proposals as a result of attending the Construction Leaders Club Mastermind Programme.
Now they are highlighting to others within the sector the importance of taking time out of the day-to-day running of a business to focus on continuous development.
“Taking part in the Mastermind programme allowed us to talk about where the company was going and what we would like from it and use it as a framework for decision making,” said Keith Rodgers, managing director of Newark-based architects Guy Taylor Associates.
“In fact, it was so helpful that we finished writing and implementing our five-year business plan within a year, leading to us opening additional offices in Sheffield, Derby and Manchester. It’s worked out very well. We have expanded our client base and we have expanded the regions we are working in, so we have a bigger spread and less of a risk.
“It was definitely worthwhile going on the Mastermind Programme as it helped to consolidate thinking and helped to focus on what matters to the business, and what doesn’t. I particularly liked the peer mentoring too.”
Phil Plant, a Nottingham-based health and safety consultant working within the construction industry, hopes to soon begin taking on his first employees after attending the Mastermind Programme.
“I’d recommend the programme to anyone who’s thinking about doing it because it helps you to focus, it helps you to come out of the mundane day-to-day running of your business, and it is good for the morale,” he said.
“One of the best things about it was that you are a group member, you are a team player and any issues you may have in business there are generally people around the table who have experienced that and can assist you and can give you answers to your questions.”
Phil, who heads up Integral Safety Management, which operates across the country, said he had learned valuable lessons from the course, in particular how to recognise and focus on his firm’s market.
“You can start to target everything and come back with nothing but if you know your market it’s best to focus on that and set your goals,” added Phil, who, with business booming, is hoping to reap the benefits of the course after he takes on his first staff members within the next couple of months.
Designed for business owners and senior decision makers working within the construction sector who have the opportunity to set or re-set the direction for a brighter future, the CLC Mastermind Programme features a programme which brings together a group of like-minded committed individuals who want to achieve sustainable growth and want to develop themselves both professionally and personally in order to drive their business forward.
The nine-month programme is run by construction industry and business management veteran Terry O’Mahony, founder and CEO of The Construction Leaders Club, together with his associates Peter Jubb, a Chartered Marketer, and Andrea O’Mahony an executive education specialist; all of whom have a successful track record in business growth and development within or associated with the construction industry.
Sessions generally take place at Risley Hall Hotel, Risley, between Nottingham and Derby.

Construction Leaders Club focuses on how to be a leader in times of uncertainty

A construction sector expert is warning that it’s crucial for small businesses in the industry to plan for the future as much as possible as the UK heads into uncharted waters following the Brexit referendum result.
Business growth consultant Terry O’Mahony says that the UK’s EU vote and the resultant political upheaval has created an uncertain future.
“When uncertainty goes up, confidence tends to go down, which can have a knock-on effect to the amount of work available in the sector or the level of work is maintained but prices suffer,” said Terry, who runs the East Midlands-based Construction Leaders Club.
“Companies often look at their cost base and cut their sales and marketing budgets and their training budget, but that means they may be less able to win work and have fewer people with the right skill set and capabilities to adapt to the change and cope with the work.
“We are heading into completely uncharted waters post-Brexit and it’s now more important than ever that the leaders at the top of companies have the wherewithal, foresight and vision to steer the management and develop the strategy necessary to guide their businesses through these uncertain times.”
The Construction Leaders Club, which was established in Nottingham three years ago by Terry as a networking and business growth organisation supporting businesses and individuals related to or associated with the UK construction industry, is running a Discovery Day which will focus on what it takes to be a leader in times of uncertainty.
The event, on Wednesday 7th September at Risley Hall Hotel, near junction 25 of the M1 between Nottingham and Derby, will also look at strategy and marketing, and will shine a spotlight on the two upcoming programmes that the CLC is running from October, the CLC Mastermind for business owners and senior decision makers, and the CLC Rising Stars for high potential individuals who want to step up to the next level.
As well as running development programmes and workshops, the CLC also stages monthly networking events.
CLC and its related business support services is the only business growth, leadership and management development organisation for the construction industry to be awarded a Chartered Building Consultancy status - an accreditation granted as part of the Chartered Institute of Building’s Chartered Building Consultancy Scheme.  CLC can also award CPD credits for its networking events, workshops and programmes.

CIOB-sponsored workshops by Construction Leaders Club turn the spotlight on business generation

Construction business growth expert Terry O'Mahony
Smaller construction sector companies could be at risk if they concentrate only on the technical aspects of the business and fail to plan for the future.
That’s the view of business growth expert Terry O’Mahony who blames the demise of some companies during the last recession on a lack of foresight and strategy.
His East Midlands-based Construction Leaders Club has teamed up with the Chartered Institute of Building to offer two workshops which will turn the spotlight on ways that SMEs in the region can focus on business development, gain a deeper understanding of how prospects and clients interact with their business and how this can be developed to strengthen relationships, maximize profits, and help protect themselves for the future.
Designed for those working in or associated with the construction industry, the two half-day workshops have been created specifically for people occupying management and technical roles who want to enhance their knowledge, skills and capabilities.
“It’s all too easy in any business to get wrapped up in carrying out the day-to-day technical work but it’s crucial that an eye is kept on the future and on planning for that,” said Terry. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to collaborate with the CIOB, which is the construction industry’s largest professional institution and whose remit is the education and development of its members and the wider industry population.
“These workshops offer a great opportunity for delegates to gain a deeper insight into the workings of business development; what it takes to develop, manage and strengthen client relationships effectively; and how to make time for business generation, which is crucial for every business to survive.”
The first half-day workshop - Maximising Sales through Exceeding Expectations - takes place on Wednesday 8th June and the second half-day workshop - How to make time for Business Generation – will be held on Wednesday 13th July. Both start at 8.30am at Risley Hall Hotel, just off junction 25 of the M1, and cost £97 per person for CIOB members and £147 per person for non-CIOB members.
The Construction Leaders Club was established in Nottingham three years ago by Terry O’Mahony as a networking and business growth organisation supporting businesses and individuals related to or associated with the UK construction industry. As well as monthly networking events, CLC also runs a number of development programmes and workshops for individuals including a Mastermind Programme, aimed at business owners and senior decision makers, and a Rising Stars Programme for high potential individuals who want to step-up to the next level.
