National Justice Museum role for J Tomlinson

National Justice Museum, Nottingham, refurbished by J Tomlinson
The refurbishment team at J Tomlinson has helped to open a new chapter in the life of one of Nottingham’s most loved historic buildings which has become a centre of national significance.
The company played a role in the £1 million redevelopment of the former Galleries of Justice, now known as the National Justice Museum.
The former courthouse and gaol, which houses the UK’s largest collection of over 40,000 law, justice, crime, and punishment artefacts, recently underwent a transformation thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) support.
Nottingham-based J Tomlinson, which has more than 60 years’ experience of heritage project work on listed buildings, museums and historic landmark buildings, completed key parts of the redevelopment, refurbishment and redecoration.
J Tomlinson construction director Pete Woods, who heads up the refurbishment team, said: “Each refurbishment or restoration contract we undertake is unique but to be involved in a heritage project in our home city, in a venue which is so well known and well regarded locally, was an honour for the J Tomlinson team.
“Our work at the new National Justice Museum ranged from relocating a set of old heavy gallows trap doors, originally from Wandsworth prison, and a heavy protective glass cover, down two floors and setting into the floor for display purposes through to the redecoration of the stunning Victorian court room and Shire Hall, as well as the former gaol cells in the cellar and basement, and the installation of track lighting.”
It was the latest heritage refurbishment project for Beeston-based J Tomlinson, which works primarily throughout the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire, and follows on from schemes such as the refurbishment of the 12th Century Old Grammar School in Coventry.
The National Justice Museum is not only attracting visitors from across the country, but it has also become an educational resource of national importance. It includes new areas to display a wider selection of archive items, features an increased number of interactive displays, a new crime gallery featuring free exhibitions, plus even more fun, family friendly activities.
Some of the most well-known items at the National Justice Museum include playwright Oscar Wilde’s cell door, force-feeding equipment used on Suffragettes and conscientious objectors, Great Train Robbery evidence and the dock from Bow Street Magistrates Court, which was used in notorious cases such as the trials of Oscar Wilde, Roger Casement and the Krays.
Tim Desmond, Chief Executive of the National Justice Museum, which is based on High Pavement in the Lace Market area of Nottingham, said: “The refurbishment of a Georgian Prison has to be a massive challenge for anyone and I have to say the team at J Tomlinson were excellent, working within the limitation of budget and timescales. They really have taken our museum into the 21st century and helped us become the first national museum in Nottingham.”
Jonathan Platt, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund East Midlands, said: “This transformation of the National Justice Museum will allow a much wider audience to explore the fascinating history of law, justice, crime, and punishment, and will create a nationally important cultural destination for Nottingham. We are delighted that, thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to support this project.”
In addition to the support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the transformation has also been made possible by support from WREN, Charles Hayward Foundation, Museum Development East Midlands, Big Lottery Fund: Awards for All, Arts Council England, Jones 1986 Charitable Trust, JN Derbyshire Charitable Trust, and the Forman Hardy Charitable Trust.

Construction services company J Tomlinson completes office upgrade

Mark Davis of J Tomlinson
Integrated building solutions firm J Tomlinson has given its head office in Beeston a revamp with a raft of improvements and efficiency measures.
The work, completed by its own commercial refurbishment division, comes as the company announces a number of new vacancies across the group.
The improvements represent an investment in the firm’s commitment to the Nottinghamshire area and the local economy, said CEO Mark Davis.
They include a new reception area to the building in Lilac Grove, new windows and wrap-around cladding to the front façade, a new kitchen and break-out area for staff, refurbished offices and meeting rooms, and new energy efficient LED lighting, as well as new air conditioning.
J Tomlinson CEO Mark Davis said: “The company has been based at Lilac Grove since the 1950s and this improvement work marks an investment in our headquarters and our teams.
“It includes measures to make the building more efficient and to create a more pleasant work environment for our staff. Our commercial refurbishment division undertakes this type of work across the regions but, on this occasion, has carried out the work on our very own doorstep – quite literally.”
The commercial refurbishment department of J Tomlinson became a standalone division last year and specialises in interior and exterior refurbishments. It works across private and public sector, with a wide-ranging portfolio including education, emergency services and commercial buildings.
As a company, J Tomlinson provides a range of integrated building services which include construction, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), facilities management, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance and regeneration. It primarily operates across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire.
It has just announced a number of new vacancies as part of its on-going expansion, including positions such as gas engineers, electricians, a mechanical estimator, customer liaison officers, electrical quality control supervisor, and construction business development – based at a variety of the firm’s locations in the East Midlands and West Midlands.
“J Tomlinson has been steadily and sustainably growing, as a result of an increasing number of contracts throughout its divisions,” added Mark Davis. “The company now employs more than 400 people. Last year we opened a new West Midlands headquarters after experiencing expansion in the region – transferring our West Midlands base from a site in Birmingham to larger offices in Canwell, near Sutton Coldfield.”

J Tomlinson completes care and nursing home project

Residential care and nursing home by J Tomlinson
Construction services company J Tomlinson has completed a 65-bed residential care and nursing home in the West Midlands.

The Nottingham-based firm handed over the scheme in Sutton Coldfield to Hamberley Development Ltd, who developed the care home for Welltower Inc. who will own the luxury facility, with Gracewell Healthcare operating and running it. This is one of 11 new care homes being developed for Welltower and Gracewell following the sale of 12 pre-existing Gracewell Healthcare care homes to Welltower back in 2014.

As well as developing the new residential care and nursing home on the site of the former Conservative Club building in Jockey Road, J Tomlinson also built a new Conservative Club at the rear of the site, which is also the home of Boldmere Tennis Club and Boldmere Bowls Club. This was completed in December 2015.

The contracts had a combined value of approximately £6 million.

Martin Gallagher, managing director (construction), at J Tomlinson, said: “Nationwide, there is a current undersupply of high quality residential care and nursing homes, and this scheme provides much-needed luxury accommodation of this type in Sutton Coldfield. It is the latest of several care and extra-care facilities that J Tomlinson has built. I am very pleased that our role in this double development has received significant praise.”

The three-storey residential care and nursing home, designed by DWA Architects, features a bistro café, a hair and beauty salon, an in-house cinema room and an activity room, with a choice of en-suite bedrooms and apartments, including respite care and accommodation for couples. It will offer residential care, nursing care and dementia care.

Development director at Hamberley Development, John Austin, said: “Hamberley Development Ltd are very impressed with J Tomlinson’s company approach and project team. They have delivered a very demanding project for both the Sutton Coldfield Conservative Club over 12 months ago and the new 65-bed care home. Following the completion of the Conservative Club who occupied a rear site, J Tomlinson then had to build the care home whilst keeping the access and car parking for the Conservative Club live at all times throughout the programme.

“The care home was built to a high standard and delivered on time which was a credit to Derek I’Anson and Craig Smallman along with their site team.”

J Tomlinson recently moved its West Midlands office to larger premises at London Road, Canwell, near Sutton Coldfield, after experiencing growth in the region.

Based from its head office in Beeston, near Nottingham, the company provides a range of integrated building solutions including construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), and facilities management.  It operates across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire.

J Tomlinson appoints new head of safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ)

Richard Ball SHEQ manager at J Tomlinson
Construction services company J Tomlinson has appointed Richard Ball as the head of the company’s growing safety, health, environment and quality team.
The move brings all the firm’s health, safety and compliance operations in-house for the first time and is designed to support the company’s expansion.
An ex-serviceman who spent 22 years in the Corps of Royal Engineers, rising to the highest attainable position of Regimental Sergeant Major as a non-commissioned officer, Richard is based at J Tomlinson’s Nottingham head office but will spend time in the West Midlands office in Canwell, as well as at sites across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire.
He said: “J Tomlinson has an excellent reputation and I am pleased to have been appointed to head up and develop the SHEQ operations.
“Health and safety was an integral part of my military life, during which I was required to deliver on time in what were the most arduous of environments and still meet legislative requirements. After witnessing and experiencing loss which was accepted it only seemed natural that becoming a safety professional would be a rewarding career. In the work place we don’t sign up to take risks, as you do in the military, this was the main motivation for moving into this sector after completing my military service in 2013.”
Richard’s department is responsible for standardising quality control of the procedures, policies and compliance across the business, with particular focus on health and safety, environmental, and technical compliance such as gas or electrical installations and maintenance.
Steve Kirkland, J Tomlinson’s managing director responsible for health and safety, said: “J Tomlinson offers integrated building solutions and to support that, we have invested in integrating and developing our management systems so that they are now fully in-house.
“Richard joins us with an impressive background of having worked both within the construction and associated professions while in the military, as well as having expertise within the field of health, safety and compliance during his time in the services and since.
“We’re very pleased to have welcomed him to this new role, at a time when J Tomlinson is continuing to expand sustainably.”
Richard, who trained as a draftsman while in the military, has seen active service in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo and Northern Ireland. He joined J Tomlinson after working for a number of companies in the construction sector since completing his service in 2013.
Based at Beeston, near Nottingham, the company provides a range of integrated building solutions including construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), and facilities management.  It operates across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire.

Contractor J Tomlinson starts work on new ambulance station

J Tomlinson starts work on ambulance station
Nottingham-based J Tomlinson has been appointed to build a new community ambulance station by St. Modwen at its Etruria Valley scheme in Stoke-on-Trent.
The 18,865 sq ft development is for West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) which is re-locating from its current location in Penkhull to the purpose-built hub facility and community ambulance station, allowing the expansion of the service to meet the needs of the city’s growing population.
It will be used principally for the maintenance and preparation of ambulance vehicles, including the repair, cleaning, re-stock and storage of ambulances and supplies, ensuring that ambulances are stocked and ready to go at the start of a shift. Part of the building will also provide offices along with training space and facilities for staff.
Work has just got underway on the scheme, which is the latest that J Tomlinson has been involved with for St. Modwen.
Martin Gallagher, managing director (construction) at contractor J Tomlinson, said: “J Tomlinson is pleased to have been appointed by St. Modwen to build the new ambulance facility serving the North Staffordshire community.
“This is the third scheme that we have constructed for St. Modwen, and also continues our existing relationship with West Midlands Ambulance Service, for whom we currently maintain 92 sites in the region.”
Euan Lindsay, senior development manager at St. Modwen, said: “Etruria Valley offers an ideal location for the new ambulance hub, providing easy access to the A500 arterial road which runs through Stoke-on-Trent a key component for the service in improving response times.
“The new purpose-built building will allow the service to accommodate its space requirements and expand in order to meet the demands of the city’s growing population.”
Nick Henry, general manager for Staffordshire and Arden at WMAS, added: “Whilst the existing facility on Hilton Road has served the people of Stoke-on-Trent and the surrounding areas extremely well since it was built in 1971, the increase in demand and higher clinical standards required mean it is no longer fit for purpose.
“The new Community Ambulance Station will enable the service to provide the very best facilities, ensuring that our growing fleet of ambulances can be cleaned, prepared and restocked on a 24/7 basis so that we can continue to provide the highest standards of care to the people of North Staffordshire.”
The site forms part phase 2 of the Etruria Valley redevelopment, which is already home to Vodafone, DPD Group and Hanley Economic Building Society.
Etruria Valley is part of Festival Park extending to over 300 acres and comprises major office and commercial development, a retail park, Leisure Park, 4-star 150-bedroom hotel, restaurants and housing. The development is strategically located off the A53 dual carriageway and within 400 metres of the A500 urban expressway, linking Stoke to junctions 15 and 16 on the M6.
J Tomlinson, which is based at Beeston near Nottingham, and operates across the East Midlands, West Midlands and Yorkshire, recently opened a new West Midlands headquarters at Canwell, near Sutton Coldfield, after experiencing expansion in the region.
The company provides a range of integrated building solutions including construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical services (M&E), and facilities management.

Working with the Industrial Economics and Finance Division of the Nottingham University Business School, the Nottingham Post has created a list of the top 200 companies in the county, based on turnover. It follows a similar exercise in 2015, carried out for the first time.
This year, J Tomlinson was ranked as 66th – moving up from last year’s 75th position.
The list was unveiled at the launch of the 2016 Top 200 Companies magazine at Nottingham’s Crowne Plaza Hotel, which was attended by J Tomlinson CEO Mark Davis, who said: “This list showcases the breadth of businesses within Nottinghamshire and highlights their importance on a local, regional, national and international scale in terms of the numbers they employ, the products and services they provide, and their key role in the economy.
“As a Nottinghamshire company founded in the 1950s, J Tomlinson is proud to be named in the top 200 businesses in the county and delighted to have moved up nine places which reflects the steady and sustainable growth that we are experiencing as we continue to expand and increase our workforce.”

The company, which works across the West Midlands, East Midlands and Yorkshire, currently employs more than 400 people and offers services in construction, refurbishment, repairs and maintenance, mechanical and electrical engineering, facilities management, and energy efficiency and renewables.
Companies were eligible for inclusion in the listing if they are active (i.e. not in receivership or dormant), their registered office is located within Nottinghamshire and they report independent accounts.
The comprehensive list includes internationally known household names, such as Boots UK, who topped the poll for the second year running, vehicle retailer Pendragon in second place, and retailers Sports Direct and Wilko in third and fourth place.
It also features a number of J Tomlinson’s client, including W & J Linney, and suppliers, such as Michael Pavis.
